Over 60 years after opening and 16 years after 9/11 Savannah River Site still needs to learn basic security lessons! This exercise was really a basic exercise and very limited in scope. They should have figured this out a long time ago: “One of the major goals of this was to ensure the right level of coordination with all the entities involved—and that includes all the off-site units like the FBI, ambulance support and local hospitals,” said Greg Hightower, who is head of drills and exercises within the SRNS Emergency Operations Group. “We’ve learned a lot in terms of communication and command and control.” This sounds like deficiencies and not just a practice drill.

They weren’t very prepared if 13 people died and 15 were injured in their play-acting scenario! “The scenario presented to the site’s responders involved a disgruntled employee and her spouse entering the Badge Office to take revenge. Mannequins were used to show the 13 people killed in the scenario, while 15 SRS volunteers acted as wounded employees.” What about a terrorist? And, how did the employee get a gun into the badge office? No metal detector? Or are the employees armed?

“During the early 1950s, SRS began to produce materials used in nuclear weapons, primarily tritium and plutonium-239. Five reactors were built to produce nuclear materials. Support facilities, including two chemical separations plants, a heavy water extraction plant, a nuclear fuel and target fabrication facility, a tritium extraction facility and waste management facilities were also built.

Irradiated materials were moved from the reactors to one of the two chemical separations plants. In these facilities, known as “canyons,” the irradiated fuel and target assemblies were chemically processed to separate useful products from waste. After refinement, nuclear materials were shipped to other DOE sites for final application. Now it’s a clean-up and plutonium waste storage site, including foreign waste – much brought in by Obama under the false premise of non-proliferation.
