Statement from The Presidential Administration of Ukraine:
“He defended Ukraine: President together with diplomats and military honored memory of Senator McCain, 26 August 2018 – 16:14
During a working trip to Donetsk region, at a meeting with heads of Ukrainian diplomatic missions abroad and Ukrainian military of the 92nd brigade, President Petro Poroshenko, along with diplomats and Ukrainian soldiers, honored memory of American Senator John McCain who died on August 25.

“There is another great person who was here with me on the eve of the New Year on December 31. His name is John McCain. A great statesman and a great friend of Ukraine,” the President said and recalled their joint trip to the Ukrainian marines in Shyrokyne.

“When I offered him to go with me and congratulate the Ukrainian marines in Shyrokyne, he postponed his visit to Georgia and said that his place was here in Ukraine,” Petro Poroshenko said.

He reminded that 10 km from the arrival, when he and the Senator drove to Shyrokyne, the Presidential Security Service reported that the positions of our marines were shelled.

“I told John – you’re an American Senator, you do not have to be there. I, as President, must be there with my warriors. And this is the first time John was offended by me even for the fact that I decided to offer him that,” the President said.

“He said: Russia will pay its big price for this completely irresponsible venture. And he devoted all his life after that to protect Ukraine and Ukrainians,” Petro Poroshenko added.

The President instructed the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States to organize an interaction with the American side to honor the memory of John McCain.
