Like Judge T.S. Ellis, III, who is the judge on the Manafort case, Trump’s sister was nominated U.S. District Court by Ronald Reagan on September 14, 1983, and confirmed by the Senate on October 7th, 1983. Ellis was nominated by Reagan and confirmed by the Senate in 1987.

Recall that Trump’s lawyer-mentor, Roy Cohn, was also a mob lawyer. It has been alleged that he got Trump’s sister appointed as judge in New Jersey:
Donald Trump: Roy was very close with Ronald Reagan actually. That’s true.
Robert O’Harrow: Here is this. I’d say in 1981, Ronald Reagan wrote Cohn, a registered Democrat, a warm note of thanks for his support. Cohn tapped into that network on Trump’s behalf a short time later according to The New York Times account . At Trump’s request, Cohn lobbied Ed Meese III, a senior White House aide to secure an appointment for Trump’s sister, Maryann Barry, an experienced jurist in New Jersey to the United States Court of Appeals. Trump told The Times, quote, my sister got the appointment totally on her own merit. If The Times reported that Roy Cohn called on your behalf, did you ask him to call Ed Meese and help your sister out? Donald Trump: Yeah. I don’t want to comment on that…

We do hope that Judge Ellis is independent and independent minded, but it’s still worth pointing out the connections – it might help keep him on the straight and narrow, especially given some of his WTF statements. Recall that in the press conference with Trump, Putin spoke highly of the US judicial system, while demeaning law enforcement (which gathers the evidence.)

Does the following mean that Ellis won’t allow evidence that Manafort was paid by criminals?
Mr. Manafort is not on trial for having a lavish lifestyle,” Ellis said.
Out of the jury’s earshot, he also criticized both sides for using the word “oligarch,” saying it had negative connotations and could give jurors the impression Manafort was “consorting and being paid by people who are criminals.” “Of course, there will be no evidence about that,” the judge said, adding that oligarchs were merely rich people.

Recall that Trump is friends with New Jersey political machine boss, George Norcross III, an insurance broker who sits on the board of Holtec, which makes spent nuclear fuel waste cans. Norcross is a member of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club. George Norcross III’s father, George Norcross Jr., was a union leader for around 40 years in New Jersey, back in the days when the unions were often under investigation for suspected mob ties. George’s brother Donald is a US Congressman.
