Thursday, 20 November 2014, Update 1

US NRC COMMENT PERIOD EXTENDED (Announced but only official later in the day). New Post regarding the extension period: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/11/20/us-nrc-comment-extension-needed-info-only-in-russian/

Good news-bad news. Good news is there is a three month extension. Bad news is that there are a lot of questions to answer and one of the most important documents (ICRP 118) is available for free in Russian only! Otherwise you must pay around $289.36 just for it or find it in a library, unless Beyond Nuclear’s Freedom of Info Act request is effective. ICRP 103 from 2007 is actually now free at the NRC site (link at above post). Of course, if you are a Russian speaker the free Russian doc is good news.

News will have to update late but has been saved. Major news is that Zida relinquished the Presidency of Burkina Faso only to be appointed Prime Minister, which seems a more powerful position.

Thursday, 20 November 2014

The US NRC is apparently extending comment period until March as per the request of Beyond Nuclear and others. More info forthcoming.
If you have already commented we are almost certain that you can comment a second time if you have more things to add by March. Procrastinators, along with those without access to the needed documents, are having an early Thanksgiving.

From Darkest Peru to Darkest Cumbria - Stop Nuclear Madness!
Reblog, excellent summary article, as well as invitation to demo next Monday: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/11/17/demo-at-carlisle-railway-from-darkest-peru-to-darkest-cumbria-stop-nuclear-madness/

The Burkina Faso post we have been working on is taking time to update. Hopefully there won’t be another major change before it is posted.

Areva accused the French anti-nuclear organization l’Observatoire du nucléaire of defamation in relation to its mining operations in Niger. The appeal hearing is today, at 13h30, Wednesday 19 November 2014 in Paris (Court of Appeals, 34 quai des Orfèvres). How can an almost completely government owned entity sue its own citizen for questioning what is essentially government policy? That’s how out of control France’s Nuclear State is. There is a support assembly at 13h at 4 boulevard du Palais, métro Cité. These addresses are two sides of the same complex. Web site here: http://observ.nucleaire.free.fr

Please Remember to comment for the US Nuclear Reg Comm (NRC) by Nov. 24th. The reason to comment is PUBLIC RECORD and for others to read. As such, please write in your own words, because if they consider the letters repeats they don’t post them. Even one sentence or two is good. Saying you want more time could be ok, as Beyond Nuclear is doing. They have a petition but it really needs to be done on the official Federal Regulations site. Both can be done. You can comment anonymously. It is important that they know they are being watched and for the record: http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=NRC-2009-0279-0067 (24 Nov.) Time to start prepping, if you haven’t. Be forewarned of the outrageous nature of the NRC questions. We hope to do a post or two on the topic, but are running behind. Worth reviewing again: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/09/06/radiation-in-water-us-epa-advises-legal-cheating-for-compliance/ https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/08/02/us-epa-radiation-in-air-and-water-standards-effectively-non-existent/
The NRC still hadn’t corrected this error on their web site this weekend (we haven’t checked for a few days), even though they visited our post over a month ago: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/09/04/the-dangerous-us-nrc-typo-making-low-level-radioactive-waste-more-radioactive-than-allowed-at-wipp/

Before there was the Honeywell Metropolis Lockout, there was the BASF Geismar Lockout, which seems a sort of Prequel:
The union has also asked a number of local, state and Federal agencies to investigate its charges that the plant has been operated unsafely since the lockout began. The plant uses highly toxic chemicals… The union asserts that insufficient training and high turnover rates plague the workers hired to replace locked-out union members… The union said 52 episodes occurred over two months last year in which chemicals were accidentally released or releases were narrowly averted. The union also asserted that an accidental release on April 2 of 50 to 75 pounds of phosgene was far more serious than the company said.” “LOUISIANA LABOR BATTLE GAINS GERMAN SUPPORT“, By WILLIAM SERRIN, Special to the New York Times, Published: May 26, 1986 http://www.nytimes.com/1986/05/26/us/louisiana-labor-battle-gains-german-support.html (Emphasis our own).

BP is both literally and figuratively close to the UK Parliament:
BP Westminster-Big Ben

Here we go again with former BP executive Lord Browne of Madingley. Don’t be fooled by the term Lord – “Lord” Browne was only recently made a “Lord”. But, he does sit in the House of Lords, and has what appears to most to be conflicts of interests. He is Chair of Cuadrilla Resources which wants to do fracking in the UK and at the same time “Lord Browne also convenes network meetings of non-executives across Whitehall to consider the big issues that challenge all government departments and share best practice.” (see UK gov below) This sounds like a powerful position.

Browne is described by journalist and author Tom Bower as responsible for a ‘ruthless’ programme of cost-cutting at BP that compromised safety, and thus the man most responsible for a string of major accidents including the Texas City Refinery explosion (2005) and the Deepwater Horizon explosion (2010)….
Browne is currently Managing Director and Managing Partner (Europe) of Riverstone Holdings LLC, and also the chairman of the British shale gas driller Cuadrilla Resources. Lord Browne was appointed as Government Lead Non-Executive in June 2010. His remit is to work with Secretaries of State to appoint non-executives to the board of each government department.

A conflict of interest (COI) is a situation occurring when an individual or organization is involved in multiple interests, one of which could possibly corrupt the motivation.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_of_interest

Balcombe legal action against Cuadrilla in the High Court tomorrow
A two day hearing will begin in the High Court on Thursday 6th November against the exploration of unconventional oil and gas in the village of Balcombe in West Sussex, by Cuadrilla Balcombe Limited.
Lawyers from Leigh Day acting on behalf of the Frack Free Balcombe Residents Association (FFBRA), a local residents’ association, claim that the decision taken by West Sussex County Council to grant planning permission to Cuadrilla Balcombe Limited to undertake works at Lower Stumble in Balcombe was unlawful…
“Our clients are greatly concerned that this operation risks polluting the aquifer and nearby reservoir and flies in the face of overwhelming community opposition.

Cuadrilla Resources is an oil and gas exploration and production company with headquarters and operations in the United Kingdom. It is best known for its ongoing effort to develop shale gas in the UK by using hydraulic fracturing. Its chairman is Lord Browne, former chief of BP and President of The Royal Academy of Engineering from 2006− 2011“. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuadrilla_Resources

CRH is evidently an attractive company to work for – directors include Lord Browne, ex head of BP. And while the company has yet to produce any profit, the 12 directors awarded themselves $3,200,000 in wages and shares in 2010.http://frack-off.org.uk/who-are-cuadrilla-company-overview/

Lord Browne of Madingley was appointed as Government Lead Non-Executive in June 2010. Oilfield waste involves TENORM, i.e Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials. Enhanced means that they are concentrated.

Injection Waste Wells are also used for uranium mining and have been used for nuclear waste: http://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/371260/ornl-oak-ridge-injection-research-paper-5834126.pdf. They may still be used for radioactive waste but why bother when they are allowed to put rad waste in landfills now.
