New post regarding previous lockout of Honeywell workers and safety issues: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/11/08/locked-out-uranium-processing-workers-protest-honeywells-use-of-scab-workers-at-uranium-enrichment-plant-in-illinois/

Honeywell uranium workers, who are unionized, have been locked out of the Honeywell uranium hexafluoride manufacturing facility in Metropolis, Illinois, since August of 2014. Uranium Hex is part of the process of making fuel for nuclear reactors. There have been multiple leaks reported, since the lockout. Our new post is actually an article about the earlier 2011 Lockout of Honeywell workers in Metropolis. It is believed that Honeywell is trying to get rid of the union because unionized workers expressed safety concerns and one member finally brought it up in a public meeting so that it could no longer be ignored. The CEO appears to be buddies with Obama.
In 2011: “Major U.S. defense contractor, Honeywell, pleaded guilty last month to illegally storing hazardous radioactive waste without a permit. The company kept highly radioactive mud in drums in the open air behind its facility near the Ohio River. Workers at the facility say they notified Honeywell of the problem on many occasions. Many are members of the United Steelworkers union and feel this particular incident led to the company’s desire to bust their union.https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/11/08/locked-out-uranium-processing-workers-protest-honeywells-use-of-scab-workers-at-uranium-enrichment-plant-in-illinois/

New Posts: The first two are Creative Commons No Derivs Articles, so we couldn’t comment on them, but we believe them to be related, as the Burkina Gold Mine is in the corner of Burkina near Mali and Niger. Additionally, it has been alleged that some of the so-called terrorists/ rebels being fought by France were actually locals with concerns about pollution from France’s (AREVA) uranium mines in Niger. Algeria with its important oil and gas resources also backs upon Mali.

Sha-kó-ka (mint), a Mandan girl, 1832, by George Catlin (1796–1872)

Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation, also known as the Three Affiliated Tribes, are a Native American group comprising a union of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara peoples, whose native lands ranged across the Missouri River basin in the Dakotas. As a result of hardship, losses from infectious disease and forced relocations, these three peoples came together in the late 19th century.

Today, the nation is based at the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota. The Tribe consists of about 13,000 enrolled members. Nearly 4,500 live on the reservation; others live and work elsewhere.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandan,_Hidatsa,_and_Arikara_Nation

… the reservation’s Three Affiliated Tribes of Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara (MHA) Nation control roughly a third of North Dakota’s oil output… The MHA Nation has received more than $1 billion in oil tax revenue since 2008, but it still struggles to provide basic services. For example: the tribal capital of New Town has only one stoplight to direct thousands of tractor-trailers, trucks and cars that pour through each day.” ( See Reuters below)

Ishinomaki and Onagawa NPP and Fukushima NPP
Ishinomaki was among the municipalities most seriously affected by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Several tsunami, up to about 10 metres (33 ft) high traveled inland up to 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the coast. The tsunami destroyed around 80% of the 700 houses in the coastal port of Ayukawa, and the Kadonowaki neighborhood was largely leveled. Approximately 46% of the city was inundated by the tsunami. … Approximately 29,000 city residents lost their homes…” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishinomaki,_Miyagi#2011_earthquake.2C_tsunami.2C_and_subsidence
Ishinomaki and Onagawa NPP zoom
The earthquake shifted the city southeast and downward, lowering it by as much as 1.2 metres (3.9 ft) in some areas and causing it to flood twice daily at high tide. A once sandy beach in the Kadonowaki area completely disappeared and tides now reach the wall that once separated the beach from the road. Near the Mangakan Island, a walkway with benches was partially submerged in the river.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishinomaki,_Miyagi#2011_earthquake.2C_tsunami.2C_and_subsidence

Tsunami heights March 2011 earthquake Japan given to Public Domain

So did the Onagawa Nuclear Power Station also shift?
The entire peninsula where it was located sunk by one meter (a little over 3 ft):
5.10 Walk-downs of the Tsunami wall
The original raised ground level protecting the plant was 14.8m above sea level. During the 3/11 earthquake, part of the east coast of Japan subsided approximately 1m with respect to sea level. As a result, the raised ground level had an effective height of 13.8m above sea level at the time of the tsunami. Since the earthquake, Tohoku EPCo constructed 3m high embankment up to 17m from sea level. The structures team did not observe any damage, settlement or failure in the sea side part of the raised ground and the slope reinforcement structure…

Tohoku EPCo recognized tsunami measures to be an important issue and took tsunami measures of Onagawa NPS. In planning of the Unit 1, the estimated tsunami height at the site was around only 3m according to the past tsunami records. But considering the argument results by the experts, Tohoku EPCo planned the site ground level as 14.8m including the margin for the tsunami height. In planning the Unit 2, Tohoku EPCo carried out a paleoseismological survey on A.D. 869 Jogan tsunami for the first time in Japan. The site ground of the Unit 2 and 3 were designed to be the same level as the Unit 1 (14.8m), after estimating the tsunami height as 9.1m by the numerical simulation. In 2002, based on the JSCE method, Tohoku EPCo internally calculated tsunami height as 13.6m and confirmed the safety of the site. The tsunami height of the GEJE was 13.0m (tide gauge), and it was almost the same level as the calculation result by the JSCE method.

Outer dimensions (at base): Full length of plant perimeter exposed to sea
Total height: 14.8m original design
13.8m (after 3/11 earthquake due to 1m subsidence of the peninsula)
17.0m (after addition of 3.2m wall post-3/11)
Type of construction: Original raised ground (14.8m) – earth embankment with concrete reinforcement
Post 3/11- Soil mixed with cement (100kg/m3) embankment ” (p. 45)
….
“5.7.1.6 Unit 2 Sea-Water Intake Structure and Pump Pit (p. 37)
The new operational curtain wall structure experienced the same 1m of tectonic subsidence as the rest of the site. Retrofits to increase the wall height are visible, which include new steel brackets and concrete panels above the water surface. The only visible damage from the 3/11 earthquake was a section of retaining wall on one end that moved approximately 40cm.

A 7 April 2011 aftershock damaged 2 of the 3 power lines connecting to the plant, but it did not damage any of the backup cooling systems, which remained undamaged and unneeded, including the ESWS, the ECCS and the back up diesel generators.

On 8 April 2011, a small 3.8 liter leak of radioactive water spilled from spent fuel pools holding fuel rods following an aftershock from the March 2011 Tōhoku earthquake.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onagawa_Nuclear_Power_Plant
