The government of the country faces big problems.
On Tuesday, March 26, Hungarian oppositionist Péter Magyar published a recording with the voice of ex-Minister of Justice Judit Varga, in which the official allegedly confirms the government’s conspiracy to conceal corruption in the country. He handed over the audio file to the Budapest prosecutor’s office.

The record states that some government members allegedly used prosecutors to remove evidence from court records to conceal their roles in corrupt business transactions. The АР agency reports this.

However, former Justice Minister Judit Varga denies that corruption was covered up. She wrote on Facebook that she said this at the request of Magyar, her then husband. She accused him of domestic violence and manipulation.

“I said what he wanted to hear so that he could run away quickly. In such a situation, any person can say something that he does not mean in a state of fear,” Varga wrote.

Madyar later denied his ex-wife’s accusation. Important to note, the oppositionist became famous after an interview with the popular YouTube channel Partizan, which he gave in February. Then he spoke about the information smear campaigns that the Orbán government uses against opponents. Recently, Péter Magyar announced the creation of his own party, which will compete with the current government.

Thousands of Hungarians protested in Budapest when recordings of bribery appeared on the Internet. Yesterday, March 26, in Budapest, the Hungarians came out against Orban, demanding his resignation. The reason was the published recording of the ex-politician who accused the country’s senior assistant to the country’s prime minister of corruption. A group of protesters marched from the prosecutor’s office to the parliament shouting: “Resign, resign!” – informs Reuters. The other day, Peter Magyar posted a part of the conversation with Judith Varga, his ex-wife and former head of the Ministry of Justice of Hungary. In the conversation, she described in detail the attempt of Orban’s senior assistant to remove some documents related to bribery from the case.

Former Secretary of State of the Ministry of Justice of Hungary Pal Wolner is involved in this case. Back in 2022, he was accused of taking a bribe from ex-bailiff Djergy Shadl. The prosecutor’s office demands imprisonment for both defendants in the case, but they never admitted their guilt. The prosecutor’s office said that they would study in detail the recording of the conversation, after which they would make their verdict. “It is legally and physically impossible to eliminate and interfere in the prosecution documents,” the statement reads.

Tomorrow, March 28, the press service of the Hungarian Prosecutor’s Office will speak at a press conference. These accusations will hurt Orban, especially on the eve of the European Parliament elections in June 2024. This is the second scandal in which the political allies of the Hungarian Prime Minister are involved. Only in February, the now ex-President and former head of the Ministry of Justice of Hungary were removed from their posts because of a [pardon given in a] sexual violence case.

43-year-old Magyar, who published the tapes with the conversation on the Internet, plans to create a new opposition party. “Hungarians are grateful to you… for coming in thousands tonight to tell the authorities that we have enough,” he told the protesters in his speech.

The recordings say that Orban’s assistant Antal Rogan suggested that the prosecutor’s office remove some of the bribery documents from the Volner-Shadl case. Former Minister of Justice Varga does not dispute the authenticity of the conversation with Magyar. He made this recording in secret from his ex-wife when he was in her house. Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs refused to comment on the audio recording.
