Contrary to the way that it’s been reported in various news services, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General & Chief of Security have NOT been permanently dismissed, but merely suspended pending investigation. It appears that this is more like an impeachment process, where the official is investigated and then parliament will vote on whether to dismiss.

President Volodymyr Zelensky tabled a motion to dismiss Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova.

A relevant announcement was published on the website of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Draft resolution No. 7567 has been registered. https://itd.rada.gov.ua/billInfo/Bills/Card/40057

Earlier, draft resolution on the dismissal of Ivan Bakanov from the position of Chief of the Security Service of Ukraine No. 7564 was registered in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

On July 17, President Volodymyr Zelensky suspended Ivan Bakanov, Chief of the Security Service of Ukraine, from his duties and removed Iryna Venediktova from the post of Prosecutor General.

Andriy Smyrnov, Deputy Head of the President’s Office, explained that the President’s decision did not mean the dismissal of officials.
