Leader McConnell and Senators Collins, Cornyn, and Barrasso Meet President Zelenskyy in Kyiv
May 14, 2022
U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following statement:
“Senators Collins, Cornyn, and Barrasso and I just left Ukraine. It was an honor to meet with President Zelenskyy and his senior advisors and to stand in solidarity with the heroic people of Ukraine.

“It was inspiring to visit the historic capital of a beautiful country that has been forced to fight for its own survival. We saw firsthand the courage, unity, and resolve of the Ukrainian people. The Ukrainians are fighting bravely against a deranged invader and have already succeeded beyond skeptics’ wildest dreams. They are willing and determined to keep fighting to victory. Ukraine is not asking anybody else to fight their fight. They only ask for the tools they need for self-defense.

“Our delegation reaffirmed to President Zelenskyy that the United States stands squarely behind Ukraine and will sustain our support until Ukraine wins this war. It is also essential that America not stand alone. Our allies and partners must continue to step up and do their part. For his part, President Zelenskyy asked us to relay Ukraine’s gratitude to the American people for our support in this dark hour.

“America’s support for Ukraine’s self-defense is not mere philanthropy. Defending the principle of sovereignty, promoting stability in Europe, and imposing costs on Russia’s naked aggression have a direct and vital bearing on America’s national security and vital interests. It is squarely in our national interest to help Ukraine achieve victory in this war and to help Ukraine and other countries deter other wars of aggression before they start.” Permalink: https://www.mcconnell.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/2022/5/leader-mcconnell-and-senators-collins-cornyn-and-barrasso-meet-president-zelenskyy-in-kyiv

President met with a delegation of the US Senate
14 May 2022 – 15:12
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with a delegation of the upper house of the United States Congress headed by the leader of the Republican minority in the Senate Mitchell McConnell.

The Head of State stressed that this important visit is a powerful signal of bipartisan support for Ukraine from the US Congress and the American people.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that today Ukraine is fighting against the Russian aggressor, defending not only its state, but also democratic values and freedoms, the right of nations to freely choose their own future.

“Russia is committing genocide against the Ukrainian people. Commits war crimes that terrify the whole world – torture, mass shootings, rape. “Europe has not seen such crimes since World War II,” he said.

The President noted the special role of the United States in increasing sanctions pressure on Russia. In particular, he stressed the adoption by the United States Congress of laws banning the import of Russian oil and the suspension of trade relations with Russia and Belarus.

Also, according to him, it is especially important to increase the sanctions pressure on the banking sector of the aggressor country.

“I look forward to the United States’ support for further sanctions. In addition, we believe that Russia should be officially recognized as a state – sponsor of terrorism,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The President thanked the United States for its leadership in supporting Ukraine.

The President called the entry into force of the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act a significant event for our country. After all, strengthening the defense and financial support of our state is extremely important for resisting Russia’s armed aggression.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed hope that the US Senate will promptly approve a package of additional funding to support the Ukrainian people, which has already been considered in the House of Representatives and increased from $ 33 billion up to $ 39.6 billion.” https://www.president.gov.ua/en/news/prezident-zustrivsya-z-delegaciyeyu-senatu-ssha-75061
