MAY 19TH COMMUNIST ORGANIZATION

The May 19th Communist Organization (M19CO) is a Marxist-Leninist group which openly advocates· the overthrow of the U.S. Government through armed struggle and the use of violence. Its members have been linked with other known domestic terrorist organizations such as the Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion Nacional (FALN), Republic of New Afrika, and remnants of the Weather Underground Organization and the Black Liberation Army.

On November 29, 1984, Susan Lisa Rosenberg and Timothy A. Blunk, reputed M19CO members, were arrested by local authorities and subsequently indicted on Federal charges. (See Accomplishment Section, page 31)

At the time of their arrests, Rosenberg and Blunk were in possession of a hugh cache of explosives F and numerous weapons. Rosenberg had been a Federal fugitive since 1982, on charges in connection with the November 1979 prison escape of the alleged leader of the Black Liberation Army, Joanne Chesimard, who is currently an FBI fugitive, as well as the October 20, 1981 Brink’s robbery and slayings in Nanuet, New York. Rosenberg has been charged with participation in the planning of this holdup and subsequent shootout which left a gU8rd and two police officers dead.

FBI investigation indicates that Blunk and another M19CO member, Alan Berkman, also an FBI fugitive wanted as an accessory in the aforementioned 1981 Brink’s robbery and slayings in Nanuet, New York, were involved in the September 2, 1984 robbery of a Stop and Shop Supermarket in Cromwell, Connecticut. The Senate had planned to work late into the evening of Monday, November 7, 1983. Deliberations proceeded more smoothly than expected, however, so the body adjourned at 7:02 p.m.  A crowded reception, held near the Senate Chamber, broke up two hours later.  Consequently, at 10:58 p.m., when a thunderous explosion tore through the second floor of the Capitol’s north wing, the adjacent halls were virtually deserted.  Many lives had been spared.

Minutes before the blast, a caller claiming to represent the “Armed Resistance Unit” had warned the Capitol switchboard that a bomb had been placed near the chamber in retaliation for recent U.S. military involvement in Grenada and Lebanon.

The force of the device, hidden under a bench at the eastern end of the corridor outside the chamber, blew off the door to the office of Democratic Leader Robert C. Byrd.  The blast also punched a potentially lethal hole in a wall partition sending a shower of pulverized brick, plaster, and glass into the Republican cloakroom.

Although the explosion caused no structural damage to the Capitol, it shattered mirrors, chandeliers, and furniture.  Officials calculated damages of $250,000.

A stately portrait of Daniel Webster, located across from the concealed bomb, received the explosion’s full force.  The blast tore away Webster’s face and left it scattered across the Minton tiles in one-inch canvas shards.  Quick thinking Senate curators rescued the fragments from debris-filled trash bins.  Over the coming months, a capable conservator painstakingly restored the painting to a credible, if somewhat diminished, version of the original.  

Following a five-year investigation, federal agents arrested six members of the so-called Resistance Conspiracy in May 1988 and charged them with bombings of the Capitol, Ft. McNair, and the Washington Navy Yard.  In 1990, a federal judge sentenced Marilyn Buck, Laura Whitehorn, and Linda Evans to lengthy prison terms for conspiracy and malicious destruction of government property.  The court dropped charges against three co-defendants, already serving extended prison sentences for related crimes.

“Weather Underground Bombings
On January 29, 1975, an explosion rocked the headquarters of the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. No one was hurt, but the damage was extensive, impacting 20 offices on three separate floors. Hours later, another bomb was found at a military induction center in Oakland, California, and safely detonated.

A domestic terrorist group called the Weather Underground claimed responsibility for both bombs. Originally called the Weatherman or the Weathermen, a name taken from a line in a Bob Dylan song, the Weather Underground was a small, violent offshoot of Students for a Democratic Society, or SDS, a group created in the turbulent ‘60s to promote social change.

When SDS collapsed in 1969, the Weather Underground stepped forward, inspired by communist ideologies and embracing violence and crime as a way to protest the Vietnam War, racism, and other left-wing aims. “Our intention is to disrupt the empire … to incapacitate it, to put pressure on the cracks,” claimed the group’s 1974 manifesto, Prairie Fire.

By the next year, the group had claimed credit for 25 bombings—including the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, the California Attorney General’s office, and a New York City police station.

The FBI doggedly pursued these terrorists as their attacks mounted. Many members were identified, but their small numbers and guerrilla tactics helped them hide under assumed identities. In 1978, the Bureau arrested five members who were plotting to bomb a politician’s office. Others were captured after two policemen and a Brinks’ driver were murdered in a botched armored car robbery in Nanuet, New York, in 1981.

Key to disrupting the group for good was the newly created FBI-New York City Police Anti Terrorist Task Force. It brought together the strengths of both organizations and focused them on these domestic terrorists. The task force and others like it paved the way for today’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces—created by the Bureau in each of its field offices to fuse federal, state, and local law enforcement and intelligence resources to combat today’s terrorist threats.

By the mid-’80s, the Weather Underground was essentially history. Still, several of these fugitives were able to successfully hide themselves for decades, emerging only in recent years to answer for their crimes. Once again, it shows that grit and partnerships can and will defeat shadowy, resilient terrorist groups. “

Chokwe Lumumba (born in Detroit, Michigan, as Edwin Finley Taliaferro and whose family was from Kansas) acted as a defense attorney in the Brink’s robbery case. Lumumba was a Black Nationalist segregationist who wanted to turn the southeastern United States into a “New Afrika”: independent homeland for African Americans. He set up headquarters in Jackson Mississippi in 1971. Mississippi public schools were integrated from First Grade starting in 1970. Progress was finally being made in Mississippi, so this segregationist push was trying to push the state backwards, and it is the same segregationist plan that David Duke allegedly had for the United States. Now one must wonder if these were David Duke’s ideas or if he was blamed for New Afrika’s ideas. Not only were African Americans making progress in Mississippi by the time New Afrika set up shop there, but slavery arrived late to Mississippi. This fact undermines the New Afrika argument. Most of Mississippi only had slavery for 30 to 60 years (with the exception of the Natchez district). Prior to that time it belonged to American Indians (mostly Choctaw). Many Mississippi Choctaw took US citizenship and merged into the general population, rather than move to Oklahoma. “The last fugitive from the 1981 Brinks robbery, which left two police officers and a guard dead, is living in Havana as a political fugitive, where she continues to call for black separatism in the United States. Cheri Laverne Dalton, who now calls herself Nehanda Obiodun, is a special guest of the Cuban government and receives a monthly stipend from them equal to the amount paid a Cuban professional. She recently acknowledged that she also receives financial help from the Republic of New Afrika, a U.S.-based group that believes that black Americans should form a separate nation out of five southern states. Obiodun joined the group after graduating from Columbia University with a degree in English and Journalism in the mid-1970s. Obiodun’s job in Cuba is to speak to local citizens and foreign visitors about the plight of what she refers to as political prisoners in the United States, prisoners serving time for crimes committed to fund and support a leftist revolution (Howell, 1994).

On May 2, 1973, Joanne Chesimard, a member of the Black Liberation Army, and two of her friends were stopped on the New Jersey Turnpike by State Troopers James Harper and Werner Foerster. While being questioned, Chesimard and the driver opened fire on the troopers with automatic pistols, hitting both of them. Chesimard then took Foerster’s weapon and fired execution style into the officer’s head, killing him. She was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
