11.08 GMT: “Germany’s chancellor, Olaf Scholz, said in a statement that the decision to supply Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine “follows our well-known line of supporting Ukraine to the best of our ability”. Berlin is “acting in a closely coordinated manner internationally”, the statement said. The goal is to quickly establish two battalions with Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine, the statement said, adding Germany would in a first step provide 14 Leopard 2 tanks from military stocks. Training of Ukrainian troops in Germany will begin soon, and Germany will also provide logistics and ammunition, it said. Germany will issue the appropriate transfer permits to partner countries that want to quickly deliver Leopard 2 tanks from their stocks to Ukraine, it saidhttps://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2023/jan/25/russia-ukraine-war-live-us-and-germany-expected-to-reveal-tanks-deal-zelenskiy-warns-of-new-wave-of-aggression

Now people need to turn their attention toward Switzerland, which has blocked re-export from Germany, Spain, and Denmark of ammunition for the Gepard anti-aircraft Flakpanzers, which Germany had already sent, forcing Rheinmetall to set up production facilities outside of Switzerland, which has wasted precious time: “Those consequences should include decisions to stop purchasing Swiss arms, as some politicians in Germany — one of Switzerland’s top arms customers — have already suggested. In fact, reducing the reliance on Swiss weapons might make sense anyhow if there is a danger of Bern blocking deliveries of spare parts and ammunition to NATO countries in a future conflict.” See: “World leaders should press Switzerland on arms deliveries to Ukraine” By Ryan Brobst, John Hardie, Bradley BowmanTue, January 17, 2023, DefenseNews: https://news.yahoo.com/world-leaders-press-switzerland-arms-194851584.html

UK Defence UPDATE ON UKRAINE 25 January 2023
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: As previously reported, Russia has worked to prepare a small number of T-14 Armata main battle tanks for the type’s first operational deployment in Ukraine. However, in recent months, deployed Russian forces were reluctant to accept the first tranche of T-14 allocated to them, because the vehicles were in such poor condition. It is unclear exactly what aspects of the vehicles prompted this reaction, but within the last three years, Russian officials have publicly described problems with the T-14’s engine and thermal imaging systems. In 2021, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu described the planned production run for 2022 as only an “experimental-industrial” batch. Therefore, it is unlikely that any deployed T-14 tanks will have met the usual standards for new equipment to be deemed operational”. https://twitter.com/DefenceHQ/status/1618144097658609665

Mateusz Morawiecki @MorawieckiM, Poland government official, 25 Jan 2023
Thank you @Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz.
The decision to send Leopards to Ukraine is a big step towards stopping Russia. Together we are stronger

Estonia Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu @UrmasReinsalu, 25 Jan 2023
I welcome #Germany’s decision to send Leopard 2 tanks to #Ukraine and to allow other countries to do the same. It is an important step in aiding Ukraine in Russia’s continued aggression. We will stand with Ukraine as long as it takes.https://twitter.com/UrmasReinsalu/status/1618214653762633728

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis @GLandsbergis, Jan 23, 2023
The thing that holds us back is fear. We are afraid of what will happen if Russia actually loses this war. There is no win-win scenario in Ukraine. For the foundations of international law to survive, Ukrainians must regain and retain 100% of their territory and sovereignty. If we fully and finally accept that Russia has to lose in order for us to avoid future wars, then I believe all the other questions about support for Ukraine will be much easier to answer. The longer we discuss how Ukraine should or should not be helped, the more Putin can build up his armed forces and murder civilians. That is why we need to overcome our fear of victory and act now.https://twitter.com/GLandsbergis/status/1617584162344402954

We, Lithuania, Polish and Estonian Foreign Ministers, call on Germany to provide Leopard tanks to Ukraine now. This is needed to stop Russian aggression, help Ukraine and restore peace in Europe quickly. Germany as the leading European power has special responsibility in this regardhttps://twitter.com/GLandsbergis/status/1616699923994660865

Hopefully the training already started a few months ago:
It was already announced a few days ago that: “Ukrainian troops will start training to use Leopard 2 battle tanks on Polish soil, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov told Voice of America’s Ukrainian Service on Friday. Reznikov described the development as a breakthrough.”Countries that already have Leopard tanks can begin training missions for our tank crews. We will start with that, and we will go from there. I hope Germany will follow their process, conduct their internal consultations, and will arrive at the decision to transfer tanks. I am optimistic regarding this because the first step has been made. We will start training programs for our tank crews on Leopards 2,” Reznikov said.
