In Ukraine, people were given the option of celebrating Christmas on the “new” calendar with the West or on the old calendar. The Russian KGB Orthodox Church was belatedly ousted and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine has rightfully taken its place.

“Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epiphanius for the first time conducts the Christmas liturgy in the Holy Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

According to an Ukrinform correspondent, the festive liturgy began at 09.00.

As reported, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine recommended that the National Reserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” not to renew the agreement with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate for the lease of the Dormition Cathedral and the Refectory Church in the Upper Lavra, the term of which expired on January 1, 2023.

According to Minister of Culture and Information Policy Oleksandr Tkachenko, the commission for the acceptance and transfer of the Dormition Cathedral and the Refectory Church of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to the state completed its work on January 5.

“Taking into account the numerous requests and taking into account the discussion that has been going on for many years in the Church and in society; anticipating, in particular due to the circumstances of the war, the exacerbation of calendar disputes in the public space; in order to study the real church need for the implementation of calendar changes in the near future, the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church of Ukraine) decided:

where there are pastoral circumstances for this and the desire of the faithful is evidenced, as an exception, by decision of the abbot and congregation, on December 25, 2022, to allow a divine service to be held in the manner of the Nativity of Christ, with subsequent submission through the diocesan administration to the Kyiv Metropolitanate of written information about the number of participants in such a divine service.
