Spain tightens security at government buildings after letter bombs found: Devices sent to PM, defence ministry, arms firm, airbase and US embassy over past week, and one exploded at Ukraine embassy Sam Jones in Madrid @swajones Thu 1 Dec 2022 16.17 GMT https://www.theguardian.com
Spain has ordered increased security at government buildings and embassies after the discovery of six letter bombs and incendiary devices over the past seven days, including one that exploded at Ukraine’s embassy in Madrid on Wednesday and another that was detected at the US embassy on Thursday.

Devices have also been sent to the prime minister, the defence ministry, an arms company that makes rocket launchers donated to Kyiv, and a military airbase near the Spanish capital.

Spain’s secretary of state for security said initial analysis suggested the packages had been sent from within Spain. “They’re similar-looking brown envelopes,” Rafael Pérez said in Madrid on Thursday. “We’re at the early stages of our investigation. While there are signs that they came from Spanish territory, let’s be prudent.”
Rosa Serrano, the Spanish central government’s delegate to Aragón, said the arms company in Zaragoza contacted the police after receiving a letter it had not been expecting.
“It was an envelope measuring 10cm by 15cm and a little more than a centimetre thick,” Serrano told the SER radio station. “The envelope was examined and X-rayed and found to contain a small charge that was designed to cause an explosion when it was opened. We don’t know what type of explosive it was.”….

News Release from Spain’s Ministry of the Interior:
The Police notifies the National Court of the interception of an envelope with pyrotechnic material addressed to the President of the Government https://www.interior.gob.es
The envelope and its contents are similar to those received this Wednesday at the Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid and at the Zaragoza headquarters of the Instalaza company, as well as a fourth shipment intercepted this morning at the Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base (Madrid).

The Secretary of State for Security, Rafael Pérez, will appear at a press conference today at 12:00 p.m. at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior (Calle Amador de los Ríos, 7) to report on these events.

The National Police has informed the National Court of sending an envelope with pyrotechnic material to the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, which was detected and neutralized by the security services of the Presidency of the Government.

The interception took place on November 24, after the services of the Security Department of the Presidency of the Government, in the tasks of screening and filtering correspondence, detected a suspicious postal item. It was an envelope addressed to the President of the Government, which had been sent by ordinary postal mail.

The Security Department activated the pertinent protocols and, after securing the area, proceeded to the controlled deflagration of the envelope. At the expense of the definitive results of the analyzes that are being carried out, the envelope could contain a substance similar to that used in fireworks.

On the same day and, in parallel, the Secretary of State for Security of the Ministry of the Interior ordered the National Police and the Civil Guard to take extreme measures to protect public administrations and buildings, especially with regard to controls over postage.

As a result of these facts, the National Police is carrying out a confidential investigation that is being directed by the General Information Commissioner and within the framework of which the pertinent investigations and analyzes are being carried out.

Due to its characteristics and content, this envelope would be similar to those received by the Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid, by the Instalaza company in Zaragoza and by the Torrejón Air Base.

The facts have been reported this morning to the head of the Investigating Court number 4 of the National Court, which on Wednesday opened proceedings after the explosion of the envelope sent to the Embassy of Ukraine, which slightly injured a legation worker diplomat.

Three new facts were added to the shipment received at the Presidency of the Government on Wednesday. The first took place around 1:00 p.m., when the National Police received a notice of a deflagration at the Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid. One of the embassy workers was slightly injured when he was handling an envelope that was addressed to the ambassador.

The second event took place in the afternoon when a suspicious postal item was detected at the headquarters of the Instalaza company, in Zaragoza. Members of the National Police and the Civil Guard went to the company, which was evicted. The TEDAX of the National Police carried out the controlled detonation of the envelope, which was addressed to the director of the company.

And in the early morning between this Wednesday and this Thursday, between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m., the security systems of the Torrejón de Ardoz Area Base (Madrid) detected another suspicious envelope, which it was determined after being analyzed by X-ray could contain within it some kind of mechanism. Members of both the National Police and the Civil Guard went to the base to secure the area, and police investigators are already analyzing the envelope, which was addressed to the Satellite Center.

Pending the progress of the investigations and the results that may be produced by the analyzes of a different nature that are being carried out by the experts of the National Police, both the characteristics of the envelopes and their content are similar in the four cases. The four facts are already known to the National Court.

The Ministry of the Interior ordered yesterday, Wednesday, an increase in security measures around the consular legations present in our country as well as in other areas that need special protection, a decision that adds to the reinforcement of security decreed since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
