Hundreds protested on December 7th and 8th, in Minsk, Belarus, “against plans for a closer union with Russia amid increasing pressure by Moscow on Minsk for further integration” (RFERL). What is now Belarus was the birthplace of the hero of the American Revolution, Thaddeus Kościuszko, who also fought for freedom in his homeland against Imperialist Russia (and Prussia). Belarus is currently threatened by Putin’s imperialist Russia, which should alarm everyone. If Belarus is absorbed by Russia, then Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, western Ukraine, may be next. Who will raise their voices to protect Belarus from being again rolled over and gobbled up by Russia?
“Kościuszko was born in February 1746 in a manor house on the estate called “Mereczowszczyzna” near Kosów (now Kosava, Belarus) in Nowogródek Voivodeship, Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a part of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth…” He “became a national hero in Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and the United States. He fought in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth’s struggles against Russia and Prussia, and on the U.S. side in the American Revolutionary War. As Supreme Commander of the Polish National Armed Forces, he led the 1794 Kościuszko Uprising… Kościuszko left his American estate to be sold to buy the freedom of black slaves,… and to educate them for independent life and work… On 2 April 1817, Kościuszko emancipated the peasants in his remaining lands in Poland,… but Tsar Alexander disallowed this…” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tadeusz_Kościuszko
“Hundreds Protest In Minsk Against Union With Russia
December 07, 2019 17:28 GMT
Hundreds of people marched through the Belarusian capital on December 7 to protest against plans for a tighter union with Russia amid increasing pressure by Moscow on Minsk for further integration.
Many red-striped white banners, the banned flag of the first independent Belarusian state, as well as European Union flags could be seen, as protesters marched through the city in what was one of the biggest unsanctioned rallies there in recent times according to some estimates.
Inspired by a similar protest in the Baltic states 30 years ago, pro-democracy supporters also linked hands along a major road in the city.
The demonstration comes as the leaders of Russia and Belarus met in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi to discuss bilateral issues on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the 1999 union treaty, which was supposed to create a unified state.” Copyright (c) 2019.
