New Orleans has many high-rises. But, they pre-date the arrival of Kailas Companies, which was created by an immigrant from India in 1990. So, it’s not like New Orleans couldn’t build a high-rise. This collapse is very problematic, because unless the United States starts restricting immigration, rather than expanding it, the entire country needs to move into high-rises. Yet, we cannot trust construction anymore. Earlier generations of immigrants had pride in their work. Look at Trump Tower. It’s been called a monument to the mob, but it is still standing! All but two of the New Orleans high-rises were built when Carlos Marcello ruled the city. We suspect that he loved, New Orleans, unlike the Kailas.

Owner and developer of the collapsed Hard Rock Hotel in New Orleans, Mohan Kailas, studied biology and law in India. He appears to have immigrated as part of family joining, since his brother Gowri studied mining engineering in New Mexico, and had himself listed in a 1971 book of “minority” graduates. Shockingly, people from India, like the Kailas’, are eligible for government contract set-asides, etc., originally intended for African Americans whose ancestors were enslaved. Mohan’s son, Praveen, studied business at Tulane, and was sent to jail for fraud, as explained in the video. The other son is a lawyer. The only engineer in the family appears to be the brother, who is a mining engineer. But, this isn’t a mine.
The site of this hotel should have been turned into a Civil Rights museum. The Kailas’ tore down the old Woolworth’s building, which was the site of Civil Rights sit-ins. Considering New Orleans’ reputation for historic preservation, the fact that the Woolworth’s building was torn down and replaced by this now collapsed monstrosity-in-the-making points toward fraud, in and of itself.
