From “The Daily Record“:
No injuries in Orrvilon Fire

ORRVILLE — City firefighters were called Monday at 11:15 a.m. to the Orrvilon Company at 1400 Dairy Lane for a report of a fire.

Chief Bob Ballentine said the fire was inside the plant and took place at a saw used in the sectioning of round bars of magnesium. Ballentine said an employee had been running the saw when magnesium dust ignited, causing more dust to ignite inside the saw, underneath the saw, in a tube leading to a nearby dust collector and in the dust collector itself.

The chief said the building was evacuated and firefighters extended a hand line into the factory, but did not use it. Instead, Ballentine said, firefighters emptied about 15 dry chemical extinguishers onto the fire.

He said while the factory is huge, it filled with heavy smoke from the fire. While the department set up all of its exhaust fans to vent the structure, they had little effect and only slowly cleared the smoke.

Damage was confined to the saw, made in the 1950s, and its dust collection system, and there were no injuries. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 12:46 p.m.

A sizable portion of Orrvilon’s business is building storage vessels for the long-term containment of fuel rods from nuclear generating plants.
