“ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE SUBCOMMITTEE ANNOUNCES LEGISLATIVE HEARING ON NUCLEAR WASTE CLEANUP BILLS Jun 6, 2019 Press Release
Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Environment and Climate Change Chairman Paul Tonko (D-NY) announced today that the Environment and Climate Change Subcommittee will hold a legislative hearing on Thursday, June 13, at 10 am in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building on nuclear waste cleanup. The hearing is entitled, “Cleaning Up Communities: Ensuring Safe Storage and Disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel.”

“Right now, nuclear waste is sitting idle near the homes and schools of 121 communities across the country. With more and more nuclear power reactors scheduled to be shut down in the coming years, Americans are rightly concerned that this hazardous waste will end up stored in their neighborhoods indefinitely,” said Pallone and Tonko. “We must ensure that waste is managed safely and securely, with long-term solutions for storage and disposal in mind. We look forward to discussing three proposals that all address this problem head-on.”

The three legislative proposals are:
* H.R. 2699 – The Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2019
* H.R. 2995 – The Spent Fuel Prioritization Act of 2019
* H.R. 3136 – The STORE Nuclear Fuel Act of 2019
