This also opens up the door for the United States becoming dumping ground for the world’s nuclear waste. Think it can’t happen? It’s been underway: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2016/03/31/treasonous-nuclear-security-hoax-us-to-bury-foreign-plutonium-at-wipp-site-in-new-mexico-formally-approved-import-of-more-foreign-waste-may-be-negotiated-today-tomorrow-under-pretense-of-nuclear
The above picture is from DOE’s WIPP nuclear waste site in New Mexico, where the United States has been diluting and dumping high level nuclear waste, and proposing to dump more high level waste, including foreign waste.
It is unclear how the new policy differs from the current dilute and deceive nuclear waste scams operated by the United States. By doing away with the dilute part?
Excerpted from Beyond Nuclear: “Hazardous High-Level Radioactive Waste Becomes So-Called “Low-Level” with the Orwellian Stroke of a Pen
The Trump Department of Energy has proposed linguistic de-toxification for some of the most highly radioactive hazardous wastes in the country, such as sludge in underground storage tanks at Hanford Nuclear (Weapons) Reservation in Washington State. In other words, in situ abandonment of high-level radioactive waste, which will eventually leak into the environment, to flow downstream, blow downwind, and harm people, up the food chain, and down the generations.
DOE got away with this at Savannah River Site, South Carolina and Idaho National Lab beginning in 2004, thanks to the dirty work of U.S. Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC). But now DOE is attempting to extend the dangerous practice to Hanford, Washington and West Valley, New York, the latter putting Lakes Erie and Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River — drinking water for many millions in the U.S., Canada, and Native American First Nations — at high risk. Anti-nuclear activists are working hard to prevent this from happening. Update on December 13, 2018 by admin” Read more here: http://www.beyondnuclear.org/radioactive-waste/
Don’t be fooled by the idea of “cheaper”, discussed below. It is to be done more cheaply mostly so that the contractors can make more profit. Furthermore, it excludes health care and social costs for current and future generations, as well as excluding costs to wildlife-the environment.
Excerpted from NIRS:
“ The Trump/Perry Department of Energy (DOE) wants to PRETEND that high-level radioactive waste–the most intensely radioactive and concentrated nuclear waste–is NOT high-level. DOE wants to make up its own mind whether to treat it as high-level or make-believe it’s not, so it is cheaper to manage… either by solidifying and abandoning it where it is now, or by dumping it as “low-level” waste in soil trenches….
“DOE wants to pretend that radioactive waste is not as deadly as previously thought—when it is really much more harmful, especially to females, kids and babies, the elderly, and our gene pool.
DOE is ILLEGALLY PROPOSING TO REINTERPRET the definitions of nuclear waste to get around the laws and save money, but DOE is not legally authorized to do this…
This violates the Atomic Energy Act, Nuclear Waste Policy Act and Amendments, National Environmental Policy Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (Superfund), Section 3116 of the 2005 National Defense Authorization Act, the West Valley Demonstration Project Act and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
High level nuclear waste (liquid, solid, sludge) is from atomic power and weapons reprocessing sites in Washington, Idaho, New York and South Carolina. Oak Ridge, Tennessee reprocessed nuclear waste, too. It threatens Native American nations and territories, first the Yakima Nation from the Hanford, WA site and the Seneca Nation from the West Valley, NY site.
Irradiated (spent) fuel is at every operating and closed nuclear power location in 35 or more states and many Native American nations. In every instance, major watersheds and ecosystems are threatened. DOE’s first targets now are the Columbia River and Great Lakes/Niagara River. High level waste could be solidified (“grouted”) and left to leak where it is. It could be sent to nuclear waste dumps that are not high level repositories and were never intended to take it, including sites in South Carolina, Washington, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, and other potential sites….” Read more and send in comment through NIRS here: http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/5502/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=26616 Emphasis added.
Wake up people – this nuclear waste could also end up in your backyard, especially with the nuclear rip and ship dismantlement of nuclear power stations, which is being done by private companies, such as Trump fund-raiser Doug Kimmelman’s Energy Solutions, and Kris Singh’s Holtec. Norcross, who sits on Holtec’s board, is a member of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club. Ultimately, since these companies are private, they could be owned by Russia or India or anyone else. We name Singh and Kimmelman based upon limited publicly available information.
