From President Poroshenko of Ukraine:
We are going our way – President congratulated Ukrainians on the 27th anniversary of the referendum on Independence of Ukraine, 1 December 2018 – 14:21

“On December 1, 1991, we convincingly answered one of the most important questions in our history: “Do you confirm the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine?”. “Yes!” – more than 90% of people exclaimed,” the President noted. “Now we are going our own way. And only membership in the European Union and NATO will definitely and irrevocably remove the threat of our return to the “prison of nations”, which was once quite rightly called the Russian Empire,” the President stressed.

President Petro Poroshenko addressed Ukrainians on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the Nationwide Referendum on the Independence of Ukraine. “On December 1, 1991, we convincingly answered one of the most important questions in our history: “Do you confirm the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine?”. “Yes!” – more than 90% of people exclaimed,” the President noted.

He stressed that the decision on state independence gained the majority of votes in all regions, including Crimea and Sevastopol.

“It was not so difficult to leave the empire legally. It was more difficult to get rid of the colonial past de facto. For more than two decades, we were moving zigzags. Day – to the east, day – to the west. Multiple vectors and non-alliance status,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

“And everything changed in 2014. Now we are going our own way. And only membership in the European Union and NATO will definitely and irrevocably remove the threat of our return to the “prison of nations”, which the Russian Empire was once quite rightly called,” the President stressed.

The Head of State stressed that the Association Agreement and the visa-free regime with the European Union, the creation of a combat capable army and the decision to refuse from Russian gas, strengthening the position of the Ukrainian language and return to our own history, consolidating the course on the EU and NATO in the Constitution of Ukraine – all this is part of our state strategy.

“It is accurately described by two phrases of Ukrainian writer of the last century Mykola Khvylovy: “Away from Moscow!” – “Europe now!”,” the President said. At the same time, he stressed that “the same goes about autocephaly and the Tomos”.

“This is rather an issue of our statehood, our independence, our national security than a church issue,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.https://www.president.gov.ua/en/news/mi-jdemo-svoyim-shlyahom-prezident-privitav-ukrayinciv-iz-27-51602 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed.en
