“STATEMENT BY SASC CHAIRMAN JOHN McCAIN ON PRESIDENT TRUMP’S COMMENTS ABOUT VLADIMIR PUTIN Nov 11 2017
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today on President Trump’s comments about Vladimir Putin:
“President Trump today stated that he believed Vladimir Putin is being sincere when he denies Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and reiterated that he hopes to cooperate with Russia in Syria.
“There’s nothing ‘America First’ about taking the word of a KGB colonel over that of the American intelligence community. There’s no ‘principled realism’ in cooperating with Russia to prop up the murderous Assad regime, which remains the greatest obstacle to a political solution that would bring an end to the bloodshed in Syria.
Vladimir Putin does not have America’s interests at heart. To believe otherwise is not only naive but also places our national security at risk.” ### Permalink: https://www.mccain.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/2017/11/statement-by-sasc-chairman-john-mccain-on-president-trump-s-comments-about-vladimir-putin
Notice what the following Trump statement has allowed – some media spins it one way and some the other. Thus, there are some news titles saying that he is with the intelligence agencies and some with Putin. Furthermore, Trump says he is with the intel agencies as “currently contituted”, i.e. after he both fired FBI director Comey, and appointed his own people to leadership positions. So, even though he appears to contradict himself, he didn’t really.
“ ‘I believe that he feels that he and Russia did not meddle in the election,’ he told reporters. “As to whether I believe it or not, I’m with our agencies, especially as currently constituted with their leadership.’ ” (“Ex-Intel Heads Respond As Trump Muddles Message On Russian Influence In Election“), November 12, 20171:41 PM ET
