It is alarming that the party of the current Spanish Prime Minister Rajoy was founded by Francoist-fascists and is acting that way. Spain should shut down all parties founded by Francoist-fascists.
Additionally, Rajoy’s party is under investigation for corruption. The crackdown may be a diversion.
In April 1 1939, the Spanish Civil War ended with Franco’s victory and Spain became a dictatorship, until the mid 1970s. A few days later, on April 3 1939, Adolf Hitler ordered the German military to start planning its attack on Poland, planned for August 25, 1939. As the Russian mafia is very active in Spain, and the independence of Catalonia would complicate their transit of illegal goods into the rest of Europe, as well as complicate access to Andorra, which may or may not have cleaned up its banking act, one can but suspect that Putin-Russian mafia are behind Spanish PM Rajoy’s crackdown. And, invasion of Poland and the rest of the Baltic region may be next.
Whether Catalonia leaves Spain, or not, is not the point. What is the point is the right of people to assemble peacefully and freedom of expression and to not be beaten up by police. If the referendum was illegal-not recognized as legitimate then the vote should come under free speech. Regardless, there can be no justification for such state-sanctioned violence.
If the basis of a nation-state is language and history, then Catalonia should have the right to be its own nation-state. Spain’s Prime Minister appears to understand the state as being an instrument of coercion, brutality and social control, as opposed to shared values, history and culture.
There needs to be a discussion about what constitutes a country. If it is no longer nation-state based on shared history, shared language and culture, then what is the basis? State sanctioned violence? Or what?
Why is tiny Andorra a country and Catalonia not? Why is Liechtenstein a country and one guy gets to decide who lives in his tiny country, but others have no right to decide who comes into their country even when they are overcrowded with high levels of unemployment?

The communications branch of the French CGT union made the above poster saying that police should protect citizens and not hit them and “Stop the Violence”. The leader was arrested for defamation of the police. France has been criticized by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International for abuses during its State of Emergency. The French people didn’t taken this state of affairs lying down but were out in the streets protesting for months.
