Last update was Sept. 19, 2017. Most recent updates are on top, after image-intro commentary, so that routine readers will not have to scroll-down far. Time is UTC-GMT. Updates as frequently as possible (In the past almost daily, more recently around once per week; but over the last month or so every couple of weeks; the future is unwritten but we hope to revert to more frequent updates). This is a continuation of: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2017/08/22/the-ongoing-saga-84-news-updates-more/. Recent post titles for the Mining Awareness blog should appear listed either to the side or at the bottom, depending on your device.

Scientists keep discovering that nuclear is more deadly than initially thought. Based on the Oct. 2015 multi-government-funded study of nuclear workers, cancer risk appears around 15 times higher than even BEIR VII (ca 2005) concluded, maybe even higher: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/12/19/another-look-at-the-recent-low-dose-radiation-exposure-study-inworks. There are well-known risks of heart disease and cataracts, too. Cataract-heart disease damage occurs at lower doses than previously admitted, as well.

While it has become popular to talk about ROS damage from radiation (e.g. Timothy Mousseau), ROS occurs in everyday life in contrast to radiation induced clustered DNA damage which is unique to radiation-damage and nearly impossible to correctly repair: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactive_oxygen_species. Clustered DNA damage is considered a signature of ionizing radiation: “clustered DNA damage sites, which may be considered as a signature of ionising radiation, underlie the deleterious biological consequences of ionising radiation…ionising radiation creates significant levels of clustered DNA damage, including complex double-strand breaks (DSB)” See: “Biological Consequences of Radiation-induced DNA Damage: Relevance to Radiotherapy“, by M.E. Lomax et. al. Clinical Oncology 25 (2013) 578-585. “The formation of clustered damage distinguishes ionising radiation-induced damage from normal endogenous damage: https://cordis.europa.eu/pub/fp5-euratom/docs/non_dsb_lesions_projrep_en.pdf More here: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2016/12/24/on-the-unique-dna-damage-done-by-ionizing-radiation-nuclear-materials-and-on-metting-hultgren-et-al-misleading-the-us-congress-in-this-matter/

A Russian Gov owned Rosatom subsidiary is trying to get an exemption to use its nuclear fuel in US reactors. It doesn’t want to tell what the fuel rods are made of, either, which matters for operating and waste safety. https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2017/04/04/putins-nuclear-fuel-co-wants-exemption-to-fuel-illinois-reactors-with-help-of-exelon-ge-toshiba-hitachi-and-us-nrc/ We have still been unable to find updates.

Concerns raised by San Onofre Safety re High Level Nuclear Waste Shimkus bill H.R. 3053: “The Shimkus bill H.R. 3053 Nuclear Waste Policy Amendment Act of 2017 will make us less safe and not solve the nuclear waste problems, yet preempts existing state and local water and air rights and other rights. It removes safety requirements needed to prevent radioactive leaks. Learn more and share handouts with elected officials and others“. See here: https://sanonofresafety.org

UK: Coal Mining Near Sellafield Nuclear Site Opposed
The more people know about it the more deeply angry they are at the thought of deep coal mining in such close proximity to Sellafield. We spoke to a miner from Yorkshire who stopped to sign the petition saying the plan is absolutely the most dangerous thing he has heard of.https://keepcumbriancoalinthehole.wordpress.com/2017/09/10/braving-the-rain-in-bowness-to-keep-cumbrian-coal-in-the-hole/

Trump gets to decide if he is more British like his mother or a bit pro-American and if he is for free enterprise or state capitalism: Bombardier recently got $1 billion or more cash influx from Quebec and has been repeatedly subsidized, directly and indirectly, by Quebec (and Canada), since at least 1975. While taking the subsidies it cut jobs from a poor neighborhood of Montreal, Hochlaga-Maisonneuve and opened shop in Northern Ireland in the 1980s. The PMs of the UK and Canada want Trump to favour a now partially Quebec govt owned company and UK-Canadian jobs over a US company and long-term US jobs!

Bombardier jobs: May to press Trump on Belfast jobs
By John Campbell, BBC News NI Economics & Business Editor

Bombardier and Cummins – where US VP Pence’s brother is VP – have joint ventures with both very tied to Russia. Boeing is also in Russia though Cummins has been there longer.

Boeing isn’t the only complaint against Bombardier:
Brazil charged that in 2016 Bombardier received at least $2.5 billion US in government support.” See: “Brazil launches WTO complaint against Canada over Bombardier aid“CBC News Posted: Feb 08, 2017 11:22 AM ET Last Updated: Feb 08, 2017 8:44 PM ET http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/brazil-bombardier-complaint-wto-1.3972018

Bombardier gets final instalment of Quebec’s $1B US investment in CSeries The completed investment gives Quebec a 49.5% of new limited partnership” The Canadian Press Posted: Sep 02, 2016 10:14 AM ET Last Updated: Sep 02, 2016 10:14 AM ET http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/bombardier-receives-final-instalment-of-quebec-one-billion-investment-1.3745880

In the past, the World Trade Organization, WTO, has ruled that Canada illegally subsidized Bombardier Aerospace. For instance, in 1999, “a WTO ruling found Canadian “assistance programs” in contravention of WTO anti-subsidy policy…. and determined that “(b) …Canada Account debt financing since 1 January 1995 for the export of Canadian regional aircraft constitutes export subsidies…” A 2002 WTO ruling named some low-interest loans from the Canadian government designed to aid Bombardier in gaining market share as illegal subsidies….” See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier_Aerospace_and_Embraer_S.A._government_subsidy_controversy and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier_Aerospace
