When you hear about public-private partnerships, urban redevelopment projects, the wall with Mexico, or even infrastructure and lead abatement keep your eyes wide-open and look at the contractors (and subcontractors) and ask how many real-estate developer scions are really needed as White House assistants! One as President is more than enough.
Kansas City Power District Street View
Cheap looking, hideous, “urban redevelopment” project by The Cordish Companies, as in Trump Whitehouse Assistant, husband to Ivanka’s friend – Reed Cordish. He’s still listed as a Senior Executive-Principal with his father as CEO. Note the “One Light Luxury Apartments” (that will help house the urban poor – not!). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_City_Power_%26_Light_District. In the Kansas City Star, June 5, 2013, “The high costs of the Power & Light District for KC taxpayers“: “The one overriding lesson from the entire Power & Light District project is this: The city in the future must do a better job estimating the true costs of projects to taxpayers, never again exposing them to this kind of financial miscalculation….“. http://www. kansascity.com/opinion/opn-columns-blogs/yael-t-abouhalkah/article320542/The-high-costs-of-the-Power–Light-District-for-KC-taxpayers.html We cannot, in a timely manner, find if they got Federal funding for this particular project, or not. Journalists need to get busier.

Many “big box” stores look better than the Kansas Power and Light District – even many, and perhaps most, Walmarts look better. The author of this blog is hard-put to recall having ever seen anything so cheap-looking and hideous in the USA, in recent decades. US cities are supposed to have planning offices and ordinances to prevent such incongruity in the downtown urban fabric.

Ben Carson, MD appears to have been well-prepped to evade questions re potential Trump (and entourage) conflicts of interest at HUD in his response (not) to Senator Warren. He’s not a nice person, as we had thought. It would be horrid to have him as a doctor: “I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT THE THINGS I DO ARE DRIVEN BY A SENSE OF MORALS AND VALUES. AND THEREFORE I WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT PLAY FAVORITES FOR ANYONE.

BUT THAT WASN’T THE QUESTION!

To which Senator Warren responds:
DOCTOR CARSON, I’M ACTUALLY TRYING TO ASK A MORE POINTED QUESTION AND IT’S NOT ABOUT YOUR GOOD FAITH. THAT’S NOT MY CONCERN. MY CONCERN IS WHETHER OR NOT AMONG THE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS THAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HANDING OUT IN GRANTS AND LOANS CAN YOU JUST ASSURE US THAT NOT 1 DOLLAR WILL GO TO BENEFIT EITHER THE PRESIDENT-ELECT OR HIS FAMILY?

Yesterday, she alleged that “at his hearing, he committed to track and report on conflicts of interest at the agency,…” but there’s no evidence of that in the video clip above, nor the transcript below. However, he would have his hands full with at least three Real Estate Scions (four if one counts Ivanka) hanging out at the White House as advisors.

How many Real Estate Scions does it take to change a White House light-bulb?

There are only two logical reasons that Reed Cordish and Jared Kushner are White House advisors:
1) Ivanka Trump, adult daughter of the President, thinks it’s a big pajama party to which she must invite her friends – Cordish is married to one of her (best?) friends and Jared is her husband,
or
2) They are hanging out to see what business they can drum up, either now or in the future, after they leave the White House. In particular, Cordish’s father spent time at HUD which apparently allowed him to make contacts and hence helped him enlarge his father’s Real Estate empire.

WHEN YOU HEAR ABOUT URBAN REDEVELOPMENT PROJECTS, THE WALL WITH MEXICO, OR EVEN INFRASTRUCTURE (INCLUDING THE PIPELINE) KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN AND LOOK AT THE CONTRACTORS AND SUBCONTRACTORS AND SUB, SUB. WHEN PEOPLE INTERVIEWED ON TV TALK ABOUT BRINGING DEVELOPMENT TO THE CITY CENTERS TO HELP THE POOR – WAKE UP AND OPEN YOUR EYES!

ALSO, WATCH AND SEE WHO GETS THE LEAD ABATEMENT AND DISPOSAL CONTRACTS! WILL ENERGY SOLUTIONS, OWNED BY TRUMP DONOR DOUG KIMMELMAN DISPOSE OF IT AT EITHER CLIVE UTAH OR WCS IN TEXAS, IF THEY ARE ALLOWED BY THE US GOV TO BUY WCS? DO THEY DO LEAD ABATEMENT?

However, Senator Warren points out:
The problem is you can’t assure us that HUD money, not of ten dollar varieties but multi-million dollar varieties not end up in the President-Elect’s pockets” [because]
the President Elect is hiding his family’s business interests…. And this just highlights the absurdity and the danger of the President Elect’s refusal to put his assets in a true blind trust…. He knows what will benefit him and his family financially. But the Public doesn’t. Which means he can divert taxpayer money to his own pockets without anyone knowing about it

HOWEVER, THIS DOESN’T ADDRESS HIS REAL ESTATE SCION ENTOURAGE!

US Senator Warren questioning Dr. Carson: http://youtu.be/J_5dgRfeQH0
From the C-span Transcript:
US Senator Warren
… DOCTOR CARSON, THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. BEFORE WE GET INTO SOME OF THE QUESTIONS I RAISED IN MY LETTER OF EARLIER THIS WEEK I WANT TO GET AN ANSWER TO A SIMPLE YES OR NO QUESTION, IF YOU ARE CONFIRMED TO LEAD HUD, YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ISSUING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN GRANTS AND LOANS TO HELP DEVELOP HOUSING AND PROVIDE HOUSING RELATED SERVICES. HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IS AN AREA IN WHICH PRESIDENT-ELECT TRUMP AND HIS FAMILY HAVE SIGNIFICANT BUSINESS INTERESTS. CAN YOU ASSURE ASSURE ME THAT NOT A SINGLE TAXPAYER DOLLAR THAT YOU GIVE OUT WILL FINANCIALLY BENEFIT THE PRESIDENT-ELECT OR HIS FAMILY?

Ben Carson Sr., M.D.
>> SENATOR, I WAS A WORRIED THAT YOU WOULD NOT GET BACK, THANK YOU FOR COMING BACK.

Senator Warren:
>> I’M BACK.

Ben Carson:
>> I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT THE THINGS I DO ARE DRIVEN BY A SENSE OF MORALS AND VALUES. AND THEREFORE I WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT PLAY FAVORITES FOR ANYONE.

Senator Warren:

Carson:
>> IT WILL NOT BE MY INTENTION TO DO ANYTHING TO BENEFIT ANY AMERICAN.

Warren:
>> I UNDERSTAND THAT BUT DO I TAKE THAT TO MEAN THAT YOU MAY MANAGE PROGRAMS THAT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY BENEFIT THE PRESIDENT-ELECT?

Carson:
>> YOU CAN CAN TAKE IT TO MEAN THAT I WILL MANAGE THINGS IN A WAY THAT BENEFITS THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
Warren:
>> YOU UNDERSTAND THAT.
Carson:
>> IF THERE HAPPENS TO BE AN EXTRAORDINARILY GOOD PROGRAM THAT’S WORKING FOR MILLIONS OF PEOPLE AND IT TURNS OUT SOMEONE YOU’RE TARGETING IS GOING TO GAIN $10 FROM A, MY GOING TO SAY NO THE REST OF YOU AMERICANS CAN HAVE IT? I THINK LOGIC AND COMMON SENSE WOULD BE THE BEST WAY.

Senator Warren:
>> ALTHOUGH WE DO HAVE A PROBLEM AND I APPRECIATE YOUR GOOD FAITH IN THIS. THE PROBLEM IS YOU CAN’T ASSURE US THAT HUD MONEY, NOT OF 10-DOLLAR VARIETIES BUT MULTI- MILLION-DOLLAR VARIETIES NOT AND UP IN THE PRESIDENT-ELECT’S POCKETS ON THE REASON YOU CAN’T ASSURE US OF THAT IS AT THE PRESIDENT-ELECT IS HIDING HIS FAMILY’S BUSINESS INTERESTS FROM YOU, FOR ME, FROM THE REST OF AMERICA. AND THIS JUST HIGHLIGHTS THE ABSURDITY AND DANGER OF THE PRESIDENT ELECT’S REFUSAL TO PUT HIS ASSETS IN A TRUE BLIND TRUSTS. HE KNOWS, HE THE PRESIDENT-ELECT KNOWS WHAT WILL BENEFIT HIM AND HIS FAMILY FINANCIALLY. BUT THE PUBLIC DOESN’T. WHICH MEANS HE CAN DIVERT TAXPAYER MONEY INTO HIS OWN POCKETS WITHOUT ANYONE KNOWING ABOUT IT. THE ONLY WAY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE CAN KNOW THAT THE PRESIDENT IS WORKING IN THEIR BEST INTEREST AND NOT IN HIS OWN IS IF HE PUTS IN ITS ASSETS IN A TRUE BLIND TRUST. TRANSFERRING HOLDINGS TO HIS CHILDREN DOES NOTHING. AS THE HEAD OF THE NONPARTISAN ETHIC COMMITTEE SAID JUST LAST NIGHT. SINCE THE PRESIDENT-ELECT REFUSES TO ADDRESS THIS VOLUNTARILY WE NEED TO PASS THE PRESIDENTIAL CONFLICTS OF INTEREST ACT THAT I INTRODUCED WITH MORE THAN 20 OF MY COLLEAGUES WHICH WOULD REQUIRE HIM TO DO SO. SO, WITH THE TIME I HAVE LEFT I WANT TO FOLLOW UP QUICKLY ON THE LETTER THAT I SENT TO EARLIER THIS WEEK AND THAT WE TALKED ABOUT IN MY OFFICE.

Carson:
>> AND I APPRECIATED THAT.

Warren:
>> AND I APPRECIATED IT TO. AS YOU KNOW, MORE, MORE THAN 7 MILLION CHILDREN RELY ON HUD FOR HOUSING. 7 MILLION PEOPLE, MANY ARE CHILDREN AND VETERANS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. FOR MANY OF THESE PEOPLE HUD IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A STABLE HOME AND LIFE ON THE STREETS. ONE MAJOR PROBLEM THAT WE TALKED ABOUT HIS BLOOD EXPOSURE. ACCORDING TO THE MOST RECENT HUD STUDY, 62000 PUBLIC HOUSING UNITS, NEARLY 6% OF OUR TOTAL PUBLIC HOUSING ARE IN NEED OF LEAD ABATEMENT. YOU’RE HIGHLY ACCOMPLISHED DR., WE SPOKE AT LENGTH ABOUT THE IMPLICATIONS OF LEAD AND LEAD POISONING ON HER CHILDREN. CAN I ASK YOU TO COMMIT TODAY THAT YOU WILL MAKE SURE THAT HUD RESOURCES ARE DEDICATED TO DRAMATICALLY REDUCING THE NUMBER OF PUBLIC HOUSING UNITS WERE LET IS A PROBLEM.

Dr. Carson:
>> I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT I WILL VERY MUCH BE WORKING WITH YOU ON THAT. 310,000 CASES RIGHT NOW OF CHILDREN, EACH OF WHICH COST US ENORMOUS AMOUNTS OF MONEY PEOPLE MONEY. I DON’T THINK PEOPLE CALCULATE THAT. SO I’LL BE VERY VIGOROUS IN THAT AREA.

Sen. Warren:
>> I VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. THIS IS A PARTICULAR PROBLEM FOR US IN THE NORTHEAST M THE PARTICULAR PROBLEM IN BOSTON FOR THE HOUSING STOCK IS OLD. IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL THAT WE GET THE LEAD OUT OF THESE HOUSING UNITS AND THAT OUR CHILDREN HAVE A CHANCE TO GROW UP WITHOUT BEING INJURED BY OUR OWN NEGLIGENCE.

Carson
>> THANK YOU FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP IN THAT AREA. >>

WHY HASN’T THE LEAD PROBLEM BEEN ADDRESSED? IT’S BEEN KNOWN AND WAS CONSIDERED AN ISSUE IN THE 1970S!

According to Senator Elizabeth Warren Dr. Carson “at his hearing, he committed to track and report on conflicts of interest at the agency.” (US Senator Elizabeth Warren) It’s not in this video clip, however! Where is it? See full Warren Statement from her Facebook (yesterday) at our post bottom.

Donald Trump recently appointed another advisor, a friend of Ivanka’s, Reed Cordish, President of Entertainment Concept Investors,  a real estate management company that owns bars and clubs throughout the U.S. to advise him on Intergovernmental and Technology Initiatives.” (By Ursula Faw : http://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/1/20/1622583/-Our-Country-Is-Being-Held-Hostage-By-A-Monster-Do-We-Play-Battered-Spouse-Or-Do-We-Fight ) He’s also been a Senior Executive-Principal at his family’s Corbish Companies. He may or may not still be, as he’s still listed on their web site. See too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_appointments_of_Donald_Trump

According to Trump’s unofficial biographer who followed him since the 1970s, the late Wayne Barrett during a DemocracyNow interview: “I interviewed a guy named Joe Sharkey for the book. And this is not actually in the book, because I’m not in the book, but—so I don’t tell this tale. But Sharkey was the county leader of the Brooklyn Democratic Party years ago. And I interviewed him. He was in his eighties and a little hard of hearing. And I said to him, “When did you first see Fred Trump at the FHA?” The FHA, the Federal Housing Administration, had financed virtually everything that Fred Trump ever built in the early phase of his career. He later latched onto Mitchell-Lama, which, you know well, is a state subsidy program similar to FHA. And so I said to—I said to him, “When did you first see Fred at the FHA?” And he said, “I went down to Roosevelt’s inaugural. And then, after the inaugural, I went over to the FHA, and Fred was already there.” And so, these guys were living at the trough, you know? They’d been living at the trough their whole lives.” (WAYNE BARRETT. About Reed Cordish’s father:
In 1956, he graduated from Baltimore City College at the age of 16. In 1960, he earned a B.A. from Johns Hopkins University; in 1963, he earned a J.D. from the University of Maryland Law School where he was on the Board of Editors of the Law Review;[6] and in 1965, he earned a M.L.A. from Johns Hopkins University.[1]In 1968, he joined The Cordish Company (currently The Cordish Companies)[5]and began developing regional, community and neighborhood shopping centers and office buildings. with intermediate stints as chair of the Baltimore City Housing Authority (1972-1974) where he helped mediate city labor disputes; and as Director of Urban Development Action Grant program in Washington D.C. at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (UDAG) on both the Carter and Reagan Administrations.[1][7]

In 1981, after having interrupted a successful development career to serve as Director of UDAG, he began a second division of the company that specializes in the development and redevelopment of multi-use downtown urban projects. In addition to his service at HUD, Mr. Cordish has been appointed to a variety of civic leadership positions as well as serving on numerous national, state, and local boards both professionally and charitably. He has chaired the Baltimore City Housing Authority, the Baltimore City Harbor Endowment Foundation, and several public policy task forces appointed at various times by the Mayors of Baltimore. Mr. Cordish has served as a pro bono consultant and mediator for Johns Hopkins University, Loyola College (currently Loyola University Maryland), Stevenson University, and other non-profit entities in dealing with major development projects and relationships with the neighborhoods around them. Mr. Cordish was the recipient of the 2004 Johns Hopkins Real Estate Program’s Leadership Award,[8] and numerous other regional and national honors and awards.

As of 2010, The Cordish Companies has grown to over $1 billion in sales under his stewardship.[1] “. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_S._Cordish (Emphasis our own.)

Trump’s son-in-law, Ivanka husband and White House “Assistant” is Jared Kushner:
Kushner Companies is an American multibillion-dollar real estate developer in the New York City metropolitan area.[1]

The company’s biggest presence is in the New Jersey residential market. It also owns the Puck Building in New York City. In December 2006 the company announced plans to buy 666 Fifth Avenue for $1.8 billion, which is the biggest deal for an individual building in New York City history.[2]

Among the company’s owners are Charles Kushner and his son Jared Kushner.“. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kushner_Companies

About Trump’s father and public contracts:
During World War II, Trump built barracks and garden apartments for U.S. Navy personnel near major shipyards along the East Coast, including Chester, Pennsylvania, Newport News, Virginia, and Norfolk, Virginia. After the war he expanded into middle-income housing for the families of returning veterans, building Shore Haven in Bensonhurst in 1949, and Beach Haven near Coney Island in 1950 (a total of 2,700 apartments). In 1963–1964, he built Trump Village, an apartment complex in Coney Island, for US$70 million.[8]

In 1954 Trump was investigated by a U.S. Senate committee for profiteering from public contracts, including overstating his Beach Haven building charges by US$3.7 million.[2] In testimony before the Senate Banking Committee in 1954, William F. McKenna, appointed to investigate “scandals” within the FHA, cited Fred C. Trump and his partner William Tomasello as examples of how profits were made by builders using the FHA. McKenna said the two paid $34,200 for a piece of land which they rented to their corporation for over $60,000 per year in a 99-year lease, so that if the apartment they built on it ever defaulted, the FHA would owe $1.5 million on it. McKenna said that Trump and Tomasello obtained loans for $3.5 million more than the apartments cost.[13]

Trump testified before the Senate Banking Committee the following month as it investigated “windfall profits.” He said that builders would not have built apartments under an expired post-war loan insurance program if regulations had set inflexible limits on loans issued by the FHA.[14] In September 1954, following Trump’s testimony, 2,500 tenants of the Beachhaven apartments sued Trump and the FHA, claiming the builder made windfall profits. As the builder had received loans for $4 million more than the construction cost, they sued for compensation for rents that were inappropriately inflated.[15] “. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Trump (References further below)

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren

OK, let’s talk about Dr. Ben Carson.
Yes, I have serious, deep, profound concerns about Dr. Carson’s inexperience to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Yes, I adamantly disagree with many of the outrageous things that Dr. Carson said during his presidential campaign. Yes, he is not the nominee I wanted.

But “the nominee I wanted” is not the test.

Millions of American families depend on HUD programs, including tens of thousands of families in Massachusetts. For many of them, HUD assistance is the difference between a safe, stable home and life on the street. As someone who has spent a lot of time working on housing policy in this country, my focus is on helping these families – and the countless others who could benefit from a stronger agency.

During the nomination process, I sent Dr. Carson a nine-page letter with detailed questions on a whole range of issues: Section 8 housing assistance; lead exposure in public housing; programs to prevent and end homelessness; programs to help victims of domestic violence; fighting housing discrimination; HUD’s role in preparing for and recovering from natural disasters; and, more broadly, the standards he will use for managing the department, including the steps he will take to protect the rights of LGBT Americans.

Dr. Carson’s answers weren’t perfect. But at his hearing, he committed to track and report on conflicts of interest at the agency. In his written responses to me, he made good, detailed promises, on everything from protecting anti-homelessness programs to enforcing fair housing laws. Promises that – if they’re honored – would help a lot of working families.

Can we count on Dr. Carson to keep those promises? I don’t know. People are right to be skeptical; I am. But a man who makes written promises gives us a toehold on accountability. If President Trump goes to his second choice, I don’t think we will get another HUD nominee who will even make these promises – much less follow through on them.

If Dr. Carson doesn’t follow through on his commitments, I will be the very first person he hears from – loudly and clearly and frequently. I didn’t hesitate to criticize past HUD Secretaries when they fell short, and I won’t hesitate with Dr. Carson – not for one minute.

I understand that some people might have made the call differently. I appreciate your making your thoughts heard. Unlike the new Administration, I don’t believe in ignoring or silencing people who disagree with the choices I make or the votes I take.

We’ve got a lot of nominees to consider, and a lot of places where we need to turn up the heat under the Senate Republicans. (Yes, Betsy DeVos, I’m looking at you. And Pruitt, Mnuchin, Puzder, Price, Tillerson – it’s a long list.) Either way, we need all of us in this fight. Your voices are powerfully important, and I hope you’ll keep speaking up for what you believe in“. https://www.facebook.com/senatorelizabethwarren/
