In Japan, Kagoshima’s former Governor Ito ignored the will of the people and re-opened Sendai Nuclear Power Station. They booted him out and instead elected former journalist Satoshi Mitazono who promised to suspend operations at Kyushu Electric’s Sendai Nuclear Power Station.

KYODO JUL 10, 2016 “Mitazono demanded that plant operations be temporarily suspended for safety checks in the wake of a series of strong earthquakes that hit central Kyushu in April, while Ito argued that the plant’s safety had been secured.” Read the rest of the article here: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2016/07/10/national/politics-diplomacy/nuclear-free-society-advocate-set-win-kagoshima-governor-race/

TOKYO (Reuters) – A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan early on Saturday, killing at least 20 people, injuring more than 1,000 and trapping people in collapsed buildings, barely a day after a quake killed nine people in the same region.http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/environment/~3/vkKpTRdLf3s/us-japan-quake-idUSKCN0XC24N

According to Asia Nikkei (July 11, 2016), “Japan nuclear restart in doubt after skeptic wins governor’s race“, the new Governor Satoshi Mitazono wants another study to see if Sendai Nuclear Power Station is located near active faults. Furthermore Mitazono has concerns about the “problems” with the evacuation plans for nearby residents. They cite a senior official at METI, which is responsible for Japan’s energy policy, as saying: “If the new governor insists on postponing the restarts, that would rule out operating the Sendai reactors,” See: https://nuclear-news.net/2016/07/10/nuclear-power-opponent-wins-governors-race-in-south-west-japan See too: https://nuclear-news.net/2016/07/12/new-governors-sendai-plant-shutdown-pledge-alarms-utility/

What problems? According to Greenpeace, the former Governor’s “position also carelessly dismisses the fact that city officials in Satsumasendai and Izumi City (30km from the Sendai reactors), and officials of Minamata city in Kumamoto Prefecture, have confirmed to citizens groups that many of their nuclear emergency shelters are vulnerable to the impacts of tsunamis, storm surges, and landslides. As a result, they are required under the law to find safe alternatives. They have so far failed to do so. The emergency plans for these communities and hundreds of thousands of inhabitants are currently in violation of the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Law.” See: http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/news/Blogs/nuclear-reaction/japanese-governor-ito-ignores-lessons-of-fuku/blog/51281/ See also here: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/11/07/japanese-governor-ito-approves-nuclear-restart-at-sendai-ignores-volcano-risk-lack-of-evacuation-plans-fukushima-lessons/

The former Governor was put out of office for opposing the will of the people. It shouldn’t have to take another Fukushima Disaster to teach people. Americans now oppose nuclear power – so why is Hillary or Trump going to be president? They need to at least to turn up the heat on them by demanding answers on nuclear power and safety. According to the WSJ, July 11, 2016, “Japan Elections: Antinuclear Candidate’s Win Poses Risk to Plant Restarts“: “Former journalist Satoshi Mitazono defeated incumbent Kagoshima Gov. Yuichiro Ito largely by pledging to suspend operations at Kyushu Electric Power Co. ’s Sendai nuclear plant, which is located in the southern prefecture.https://nuclear-news.net/2016/07/11/japan-elections-antinuclear-candidates-win-poses-risk-to-plant-restarts/
