Inane Thanksgiving greeting from the US NRC, which constantly whittles away public safety, making a major nuclear disaster imminent. They also allow legal leakage of lethal radioactive materials into the environment from nuclear reactors and other nuclear facilities on a routine basis.
How radioactive was your Thanksgiving Dinner? Unless it was organic and tested, or homegrown on tested soil, covered and watered with tested water, you will never know.
However, the US (FDA) allows 15 times more radiation (1500 Bq per kg) in US food than allowed in Japan (100 Bq). A kilogram (kg) is 2.2 pounds. This amount is called the DIL (Derived Intervention Level). It is so high that most food is apparently not tested at all. For Europe the level is 600 Bq, and if it comes from Japan the EU demands 100 Bq so that there is no radioactive food dumping. (Canada, Australia and New Zealand apparently allow 1000 Bq based on UN estimates which use flawed assumptions regarding the amount of food eaten and outdated conversion factors.)
The US no longer allows labeling of food source, at least for meat, due to a recent lawsuit by Canada and Mexico. [Correction – the removal of meat labels only passed the House, as of Thanksgiving. However, by the time you read this it may have passed the Senate, as well: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/12/10/world-trade-organization-wto-rules-against-us-food-labeling-safety-unlabeled-force-feeding-of-radioactive-japanese-food-coming-soon/ ]
Who will get Japan’s radioactive food seems clear. Some places in the US still flaunt the law for now, or it hasn’t entered into effect. Afterwards your only protection from Fukushima food will be growing your own or befriending your local farmer. Japan has exported “organic” jam with some radiation.
Several years of exposure at the US maximum level would lead to an estimated 10% of the exposed population eventually getting excess, extra, cancers from food alone. These are extra, excess cancers above and beyond the already high cancer rates. Approximately half will die 14 to 15 years younger than they would have otherwise due to these “life-shortening” cancers, meaning on average deaths will occur around retirement. However, if you were meant to live to 100 years old, you might make it to 85 years old.
The USFDA excuse is that all food eaten would not be that contaminated. At this point, this is almost certainly true. However, when the US has another nuclear accident or accidents – events which are imminent due to the age and shoddy upkeep of the nuclear reactors, mis-packed spent fuel in flimsy dry casks, and burial of nuclear waste, etc. – most food could become highly contaminated.
Furthermore, without food labeling Japan can dump all of its radioactive food upon the US since Americans are expected to eat 15 times more radiation than the Japanese.
Some livestock in the UK and reindeer in Scandinavia have remained at about the acceptable US level of contamination, or even higher, since the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, even though Chernobyl is very far away from the UK and Scandinavia. Cesium 137, which is mostly what they test for, has a half-life of around 30 years, meaning that it will persist in the environment for 100s of years. Iodine 129, which they rarely speak of, has a half-life of 15.7 million years. While the short-term impacts of Iodine 129 are generally not as severe as the short-lived iodine 131, because it persists in the environment and body, iodine 129’s damage to the thyroid-cancer is widely felt after a few decades (and widely ignored, including by the FDA). These are but two of the potentially lethal radioactive materials that may be found in your food from nuclear weapons testing, routine radioactive leaks from nuclear reactors and other nuclear facilities (and waste), as well as “accidents”.
Already in 1950, the late William Russell of Oak Ridge National Labs stated regarding ionizing radiation: “There is no threshold dose. In other words, genetic changes may be expected at any dose, no matter how small…”
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission is apparently still currently examining a proposal to increase radiation exposure for the American people by 100 times (100 mSv) the already high amount considered acceptable internationally (1 mSv), and 400 times that allowed by the US EPA (0.25 mSv). This can be called nothing but a genocidal war on the American people, as it means that after less than a decade of exposure, each American would get one extra cancer, if it did not build up in the environment and if it were the only exposure. But, it does build up in the environment, and it is not the only exposure. Most people forget what was done to the American Indians. If someone murdered their spouse would you marry them? Do you really think that a country that would do this to the American Indian would treat you any better? These policies prove that the life of the non-indigenous inhabitants of America have no value to the government, either.
Public comments on the 100 mSv per year docket are found here: http://www.regulations.gov/#!docketDetail;D=NRC-2015-0057 (Original deadline was Sept. 8, extended to Nov. 19). Current status of decision-making is unknown.
New Richardson et. al. study commentary, suggesting approximately 15 excess cancers per 100 people for 100 mSv: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/12/19/another-look-at-the-recent-low-dose-radiation-exposure-study-inworks/
Complain to your government officials. In fact, whine and complain about high levels of radiation allowed in your food, as well as this potential 100 mSv per year genocide, to as many people as you can.
Who will pay for these extra cancers? Who will care for the sick?
Remember that each becquerels is a radioactive shot through your body-cells per second. Shots are random and there may or may not be adequate repair. Damage may not even be visible, however, until future generations.
When people go around shooting randomly at people it is called a crime or even terrorism.
How is 1500 radioactive shots per second, in your body, for each 2.2 pounds of food eaten ok? How is it not a crime? This is not from medical exposure. This is from nuclear weapons or nuclear power, not necessarily in your own country. Did you benefit from Fukushima electricity? Why should you eat their radioactive waste food, that even the Japanese don’t want? Why should you eat radioactive waste food even from your own country.
The sunbelt alone could light up North America. If Reagan-Republicans wouldn’t have axed President Carter’s solar-renewable plans, the US would be currently running off of solar-renewables, and certainly have no nuclear (except what is “needed” for nuclear weapons upkeep).
