These images or something similar will probably stay on top until a) pro-nuclear people volunteer to work at nuclear waste sites (WIPP, Fukushima, Hanford, etc.) in droves, and b) the nuclear industry is shut down. Then, after b), there will still be the problem of a) the nuclear waste to be secured. We live on borrowed time. Let’s shut the nuclear industry down now!

Fukushima: Note that they will remove MOST radioactive materials before dumping into the Pacific. This means they will not remove all types of radionuclides, and that they will not even remove 100% of the types that they remove some of! Most know, for instance, that they will not remove tritium even though there are methods for removing tritium from water. It sounds like the fisherman will support the dumping if TEPCO helps to market their products. Thus, TEPCO continues to externalize its costs upon the public, within Japan and without. It is unclear if the shroud will remain partially uncovered into 2016 or if they will replace it bit by bit.

They don’t just do gambling. The ‘Ndrangheta and radioactive waste: “According to Fonti, a manager of ENEA paid the clan to get rid of 600 drums of toxic and radioactive waste from Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, and the US, with Somalia as the destination, where the waste was buried after buying off local politicians. Former employees of ENEA are suspected of paying the criminals to take waste off their hands in the 1980s and 1990s. Shipments to Somalia continued into the 1990s, while the ‘Ndrangheta clan also blew up shiploads of waste, including radioactive hospital waste, and sending them to the sea bed off the Calabrian coast.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_waste_dumping_by_the_%27Ndrangheta

The rise in cancer-related mortality is thought to be mainly caused by pollution from illegal waste disposal by the Camorra criminal organization.

In the end, any radionuclides which are short-lived enough to be safely buried from a radiological perspective (half-life of one year or less) can be more safely held on site until they are no longer radioactive. Thus, there should be no burial of radioactive waste at all.

The “low level” waste under discussion by the US NRC is deadly for hundreds, thousands and millions of years. Burying it is a crime.

We have been hoarding some Reuters news titles, but are short on time for now.

July 20, 2015 was the chance to comment to the US NRC about openness and participation. They seem to want to shut it down.
