The UK Labour Party has proven not only that it is backwards looking on energy policy but that it cannot even face reality and change direction. Less than two weeks after the French government announced dangerous defects in the reactor pressure vessel for EDF’s grossly over-cost and late nuclear reactor project at Flamanville, and a little over a month after Bouygues was fined by a French court for using illegal workers at the work site [1], the Labour Green Plan announced, on April 20th, that: “Labour also supports the development of new nuclear in the UK“. http://www.shadowdecc.org.uk/labour_launches_green_plan (April 20 2015)

This has been the long-standing position of Ed Miliband, who as Secretary of the DECC, wanted to fast-track through 10 new nuclear reactors.

Current DECC Secretary Lib Dem Ed Davey, former Labour PM Gordon Brown, and Ed Miliband all have apparent conflicts of interest regarding the nuclear industry. 84.4% French State owned EDF owns and operates eight of the UK’s ten nuclear power stations and during Ed Davey’s tenure have gotten permission to build a new one at Hinkley Point, and has considered a new one at Sizewell. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Électricité_de_France http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDF_Energy

While one cannot exclude stupidity or homicidal tendencies as their reason for promoting nuclear, here are their apparent conflicts of interest: Former Labour PM Gordon Brown’s brother, Andrew was EDF’s Director of Corporate Communications, and is now Director of brand sustainability and external communications. [2]”Ed Miliband’s barrister wife Justine Thornton advised EdF Energy on its Development Consent Order for a new nuclear plant at Hinkley Point.
http://www.theecologist.org/blogs_and_comments/commentators/2587477/nuclear_power_trumps_democracy.html Ed Davey’s brother Henry works for Herbert Smith Freehills law firm:
EDF Energy’s official and unofficial influence within government is extremely worrying… ‘Davey’s brother advised EDF on trading contracts relating to the company’s acquisition of British Energy in 2008. Herbert Smith has since worked with EDF to gain development consent for the construction and operation of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in Somerset…Ed Davey made a dramatic U-turn by declaring he is now pro-nuclear. The connection with his brother’s professionals interests is simply too close for comfort.http://stopnuclearpoweruk.net/content/new-energy-secretarys-appointment-underlines-unhealthy-relationship-between-government-and (Emphasis our own) Herbert Smith Freehills also advises-represents Russian State owned Rosatom.

Certainly the myopia and backwardness of many unions should not be overlooked as a problem. As Ian Fairlie recently observed: “It’s about time the union movement looked to the future than the past on energy policy. And the Labour party too.” “Letters“, Thursday 9 April 2015 19.46 BST Last modified on Thursday 9 April 2015 19.57 BST http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/apr/09/faith-fossil-fuel-divestment

Ed Miliband to unveil plans to fast-track new nuclear power stations: Government will identify sites around Britain suitable for building nuclear plants as part of new energy policy“, by Hélène Mulholland, David Teather and agencies, Monday 9 November 2009 09.46 GMT Last modified on Monday 19 May 2014 17.10 BST http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2009/nov/09/nuclear-sites-ed-miliband

Mr Miliband said the new Infrastructure Planning Commission would have to make a decision on each application within a year of receiving it, to avoid a repeat of previous lengthy inquiries.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/8349715.stm

John Loughhead current DECC Chief Scientific Advisor was Corporate Vice-President of Technology and Intellectual Property at Alstom’s head office in Paris.
https://www.gov.uk/government/people/john-loughhead Alstom was until recently 20% owned by Bouygues http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bouygues
Alstom makes turbines, including for the nuclear industry. It has a branch at Le Creusot, the same town which is supposed to have made the defective Areva nuclear reactor pressure vessel. (Areva-EDF are French State owned nuclear twins. EDF is Electricity of France).

Regarding the continuity of this death dealing extermination protocol, called nuclear power, by Labour, Lib Dems and Conservatives:
There has been broad continuity in nuclear policy by recent UK Governments. In January 2008 the nuclear white paper, Meeting the energy challenge held that government should take active steps to facilitate investment in new nuclear plant. Following this, in 2009 the Labour Government arranged for the sale of British Energy, including eight of the UK’s 10 operational plants, to EDF in a £12.5 billion deal. The then Energy Secretary Ed Miliband welcomed the moveEDF said it would build four new nuclear stations, if the ‘process’ was made ‘as fluent as possible’, which would ‘take time and would cost’. It was felt however that this ‘paved the way’ for new nuclear.http://www.parliament.uk/Templates/BriefingPapers/Pages/BPPdfDownload.aspx?bp-id=sn06228 (“Nuclear power Standard Note: SN06228” Last updated: 24 October 2013 Author: Patsy Richards, Mike Fell and Paul Bolton Section Science and Environment, OPL )

Labour, Lib-Dems-Conservatives have allowed and continue to allow the import of foreign nuclear waste to be dumped upon the British people.

UKIP is also pro-nuclear. It’s useless to worry about immigration if you and the immigrants are both going to be killed by the nuclear industry.

THE DEADLY AREVA-EDF-FLAMANVILLE DEFECT WHICH EVERYONE BUT THE GREEN PARTY, SNP, AND PLAID CYMRU CHOOSE TO IGNORE:
Danger of early cracking in steel
It is understood that the maximum allowable carbon content of steel in the pressure vessel is 0.22%, but tests have shown 0.30% in parts of the Flamanville vessel. This could render it subject to cracking in operation and shorten its intended lifespan.

On potential conflicts of interests, excerpted from:
Nuclear power trumps democracy, by Donnachadh McCarthy, 9th October 2014

Gordon Brown’s brother, Andrew, was nuclear giant EdF’s head of media relations in the UK.

Ed Miliband’s barrister wife Justine Thornton advised EdF Energy on its Development Consent Order for a new nuclear plant at Hinkley Point.

The prominent Lib Dem MP Ed Davey stood for election opposing nuclear energy, but as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, he became nuclear power’s chief cheerleader…. Ed Davey’s brother, Henry Davey, works for the global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills which has advised EdF on its purchase of nuclear plants and the development application for a new nuclear plant at Hinkley Point.

Also Lib Dem peer Tim Clement-Jones… is founder and chairman of Global Government Relations, the lobbying arm of the huge multinational law firm DLA Piper, and serves as DLA Piper’s London Managing Partner.

DLA Piper is listed as a member of the Nuclear Industry Association,… advised AREVA SA on their investment in New Nuclear Build at Hinkley Point C
advised Sellafield Limited on all aspects of their waste management and decommissioning programme…
is advising the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority on the application of the International Nuclear Liability Conventions in respect of the marine transport of high level radioactive waste
is advising nuclear supply chain on tendering exercises in support of new nuclear build in the UK.
is advising Westinghouse, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Magnox Limited and International Nuclear Services Limited on all aspects of fuel supply contracts, enrichment, waste management and radioactive transportation in support of activities in UK and globally.
