GOSL bribed US Congressmen?
By Gagani Weerakoon & Skandha Gunasekara

A full scale investigation was ordered to be held into payments amounting to millions of rupees allegedly made to the US Congressmen by the External Affairs Ministry during previous government to lobby on behalf of Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said in Parliament that he will order Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera to conduct an immediate investigation into the incident.

He also said that it was illegal according to the US laws for Congressmen to accept or offer such payments from other countries for such purposes.

The Prime Minister said so in response to a remark made by JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who said that it seemed that the previous government which won over opposition MPs by offering privileges and perks did the same with US Congressmen too.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said that the investigation would reveal whether the US Congressmen had accepted any funds from the Ministry of External Affairs of Sri Lanka and if so, action would be taken to inform the US government of that“. Courtesy of Ceylontoday.lk:

Four US lobby firms hired by the former government of Sri Lanka from 2010 to 2013 were Patton Boggs LLP, Cranford Johnson Robinson PR, Steve Hedges and Majority Group LLC, which cost 1.3 million US dollars: http://dbsjeyaraj.com/dbsj/archives/39196

This looks like typical legal lobbying, which since it is legal doesn’t get its proper name of bribery-corruption, which is why the US is going to hell in a hand-basket, as the saying goes. Perhaps since it is on behalf of a country instead of a corporation it is illegal? The Ceylon today article says: “He also said that it was illegal according to the US laws for Congressmen to accept or offer such payments from other countries for such purposes.

Some sources seem to think that the allegations involve the 11 Congressmen who initially sponsored/co-sponsored the following bill (the first 11 on the list). We have to leave it to the reader to figure out definitively if this is correct and if these are the Congressmen. The logical approach would be to go through all recent legislation concerning Sri Lanka and find repetitive names. Or, wait for the Sri Lankan investigation to be finished. Most of the US Congress appear so sleazy and corrupt that there needs to be a list of non-corrupt ones rather than corrupt ones. Here we mean corrupt in the general sense, including things which are legal but should be illegal. So, if those on this list are innocent on this account, they are likely guilty on other accounts. We know for certain this is true of Sen. Vitter. But, it is probably legal corruption, as it is with Vitter’s funding by the nuclear industry, which seems to result in his wanting the NRC to continue with business as usual, endangering the health and welfare of Americans and the environment.
