UK Democracy? Democracy in England? When? Did I sleep through that part of European history AND Western Civilization in both the classes and the books! Even stranger, the UK has largely replaced hereditary Lords with appointed ones who, more than once, failed to get elected to the House of Commons and then got appointed to House of Lords. Oh, wait, one of those would be “Baroness Verma” who is promoting a nuclear agenda for a country in which she was not even born, who lives in what appears the most nuclear free area of England, and who apparently wants to destroy Beatrix Potter’s Lake District with a WIPP style nuclear dump! Verma “was created a Conservative life peer on 2 June 2006 taking the title Baroness Verma, of Leicester in the County of Leicestershire,[4][5] having been an unsuccessful parliamentary candidate in two general elections (2001 and 2005) – in Hull East in 2001, where she finished third, and in Wolverhampton South West in 2005, where she came second to the Labour incumbent, Rob Marris.[6]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandip_Verma,_Baroness_Verma http://www.theguardian.com/politics/person/5951/sandip-verma

Today in Earthquake History

From Significant Earthquakes of the World 1995.
M5.9 – Cyprus, 1995
Two people killed and five injured in the Paphos area. Fifty houses destroyed, 70 seriously damaged and 500 slightly damaged in the Paphos and Nicosia areas. Twenty masonry houses were destroyed at Arodhes. Felt (VII) at Arodhes, Peristerona and Polis; (VI) at Kathikas, Peyia and Stroumbi; (V) at Kykkou Monastery; (IV) at Larnaca, Limassol and Nicosia; (III) at Paralimni. Felt throughout Cyprus. Also felt in northern Israel and Lebanon. From Significant Earthquakes of the World 1995.
M6.9 – Sulawesi, 1969
Madjene, on the west coast of Celebes, was the most seriously damaged by this strong shock. Eighty percent of the brick structures were damaged, and some completely collapsed. In Madjene and environs, 64 people were killed, 97 injured, and over 1,200 buildings were wrecked. Much of the damage in the villages resulted from faulty construction, and their location on alluvium instead of rock or more firm ground. Ground fissures were noted in several places. A tsunami was generated that reached about 4 meters height along the coastal villages north of Madjene. Several wooden houses located at the end of a bay were swept away by the waves. The press reported that the tsunami took 600 lives. From Significant Earthquakes of the World 1969 and Earthquake Information Bulletin, Volume 2, Number 1.

Canada’s Transportation Safety Board position is:
….the revised Class 111 tank car standard introduced for consultation in January 2014 is not sufficiently robust to minimize the risk of dangerous goods releases when these cars are involved in a derailment.until all pre-CPC 1232/TP 14877 tank cars are no longer used to transport flammable liquids and a more robust tank car standard with enhanced protection is set for North America, the risk will remain.” http://www.tsb.gc.ca/eng/recommandations-recommendations/rail/2014/rec-r1401.asp This is not made sufficiently clear in the Reuters article.

Gulf Oil, which had the accident in India, is a Hinduja Group Company. It is privately owned by Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja, who was born in India. It is headquartered in the UK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindujas

Governments-industry refuse to get oil and gas/railroad safety in hand, after over 150 years. We don’t have 150 years for them to get a grip on nuclear safety!

Proctor St. Port Arthur ca 1920
Port Arthur, Texas, ca 1920. At this time it allegedly had more cars, or more cars per capita, than any other city in America and probably the world. It is easy to imagine with this postcard. That, of course, was the “Roaring Twenties”.

When oil was discovered in the region, Port Arthur developed for a time as the center of the largest oil refinery network in the world… The commercial center of Port Arthur was at its peak in the early 1900s.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Arthur,_Texas
The Port Arthur Refinery is an oil refinery located in Port Arthur, Texas. It is the largest oil refinery in the United States.

The first processing units of the Port Arthur Refinery were constructed in 1902 by the Texas Company, later Texaco. The roots of this refinery can be traced to the Spindletop oil boom near Beaumont, Texas. It came into operation in 1903. Port Arthur is in eastern Texas on the Gulf of Mexico. At certain points during its lifespan it was considered the flagship refinery of Texaco.

On January 1, 1989, Saudi Refining, Inc. purchased 50% of the Port Arthur refinery (and two others) from Texaco to form a joint venture with Texaco called Star Enterprise. In 2001, Texaco was purchased by Chevron. Shortly thereafter Chevron’s interest in this refinery (and two others) was sold to Shell on February 13, 2002. This new joint venture was called Motiva Enterprises LLC. Today, the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery is a joint venture with a 50% ownership between Shell Oil Products US and Saudi Refining Inc. Shell Oil Products is part of Royal Dutch Shell. Saudi Refining is part of Saudi Aramco. Approximately 1,200 people are employed at the site.

The completion of the expansion of the Port Arthur Refinery, officially celebrated on 31 May 2012, increased its crude oil capacity to 600,000 barrels per day – making it the largest refinery in the US. The expansion added 325,000 barrels per day of capacity.

This large and sophisticated refinery has the ability to process a flexible crude diet. It can process heavy, sour, and acid crudes from wherever they become available – initially Saudi Arabia – but also other areas. The refinery can also process shale oil, which is relatively light and sweet crude, if it’s economically attractive. The refinery supplies gasoline, diesel, aviation fuels, and high quality base oils to customers in the US.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Arthur_Refinery

From Reuters: “Unprecedented sea lion strandings in California linked to warmer Pacific Posted:Thu, 19 Feb 2015 00:29:38 GMT“:
Fish populations are likely being disrupted by a layer of ocean water, some 100 meters (330 feet) deep, that is 2 to 5 degrees warmer than usual this time of year along the Pacific Coast from Baja to Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, said NOAA climatologist Nate Mantua.” See: http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/environment/~3/8SduYLdRNNo/story01.htm

Biomass could also be from yard-garden clippings, forest undergrowth, rather than trees.
Environment campaigners have been lobbying the European Commission to control the extent to which forests are chopped down to provide wood pellets to replace coal, saying the impact on the climate can be at least as damaging as burning coal, the most polluting fossil fuel.http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/basicmaterialsNews/~3/-7mIYfXKmpI/eu-powerplant-britain-update-1corrected-idUSL5N0VT2IT20150219

Hershey and Three Mile Island
Corn housing near Three Mile Island http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Mile_Island_Nuclear_Generating_Station (Corn Field-Farm with Three Mile Island Nuclear Reactors in background).
Citing confidential memos, Caldicott says that the Hershey Foods Corporation was concerned about radiation levels in milk used in their products because of the proximity of the Three Mile Island accident to Hershey’s Pennsylvania factory. According to Caldicott, citing a 30 March 1979 study by the Pennsylvania State University, College of Engineering, radiation contaminants that fell on the Pennsylvania grass found their way into the milk of the local dairy cows.[4] Caldicott noted this was contrary to the findings in the government official report[5] released shortly after the Three Mile Island disaster. Caldicott disputes this report in her book, Nuclear Power is Not the Answer.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Caldicott

Excellent web site from the United Arab Emirates: http://seismology.ncms.ae

The only things more certain than death and taxes are large Japanese earthquakes (and other earthquakes around the Ring of Fire. More evidence that those promoting nuclear power in Japan, or elsewhere along the Pacific Ring of Fire, are either dim-witted or members of a death cult, (as has been alleged about some of Japan’s leaders).

New Post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/02/17/scotland-remote-location-for-old-uk-nuclear-sub-reactor-pressure-vessels-deadline-for-comment-feb-20th/

Sunday, 15 Feb. 2015

The former Chapelcross Nuclear site near Annan, Scotland is being unfairly targeted by the UK Ministry of Defense for the storage of old submarine nuclear reactor pressure vessels. It is “temporary”, which will most likely become permanent, as no one wants a permanent repository – all while many want to continue to make military and civilian nuclear waste. Deadline for comment is February 20: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/submarine-dismantling-project-site-for-the-interim-storage-of-intermediate-level-radioactive-waste Info on where to comment is found here, on an SNP web site: http://www.snpdumfries.org/nuclear-dumping-at-chapelcross/2015-01 Many want the nuclear reactors, and subs, but to dump the waste on others – usually rural, poor communities. Sellafield is also on the list even though they already have dangerously high levels of nuclear waste. And, a serious accident at Sellafield could wipe out most of the UK and much of Europe. Aldermaston seems the proper choice, if any of the choices are proper, because it is a military site and since it is closer to parliament, it is more likely to be properly managed. All of the chosen sites appear to be in seismic areas, though Aldermaston may be slightly less so. While UK earthquakes are generally weak by international standards, they tend to be shallow and widely felt. The best place for the UK’s nuclear waste and especially military nuclear waste is in government bunkers in London. Pindar under Whitehall is probably the best. We can’t find a picture of it. However we found this: “The Admiralty Citadel, London’s most visible military citadel, is located just behind the Admiralty building on Horse Guards Parade. It was constructed in 1940–1941 as a bomb-proof operations centre for the Admiralty, with foundations 30 feet (nine metres) deep and a concrete roof 20 feet (six metres) thick. It is also linked by tunnels to government buildings in Whitehall.[6]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_citadels_under_London

The same is true in all countries. If nuclear is so great and so safe, then the politicians should be willing to have it near their homes and under Houses of Parliament-US Congress. That way it will always be well funded, well guarded and well maintained. If WIPP were under Washington DC there would be none of this, you can be certain.
WIPP 22 May 2014
The UK also wants to dismantle all of its old submarines near Edinburgh Scotland (Rosyth) and repair new ones near Glasgow (Faslane), processes which pollute the air and water with dangerous radionuclides. These are both large cities. And, if the UK government and its policies would not have chased out so many of the Scottish people there would be as many or more people in Scotland than in England. There are over 10 times as many people of Scots ancestry outside of Scotland, as within. Additionally, many who think they are Irish are Scots. The Scots people should be allowed right of return, like Italians and other peoples have, rather than turning Scotland into England’s nuclear waste dump. And, even if the Scots hadn’t been forced out in various ways, should people and animals in rural areas be punished for not over-populating the earth? Where does anyone think the food will come from if rural areas become nuclear dumps-wastelands? It’s rather funny that many in England, and even abroad, drink Sellafield milk and eat Sellafield cheese, without even knowing it. The US government appears similarly unconcerned with the situation of nuclear reactors and waste in California. Ditto for the impacts of Fukushima in California, even though much of America’s food comes from there. It’s really pretty funny in a morbid sort of way.

GE now has a general manufacturing facility-export hub in India. It will probably make the parts for any GE Nuclear reactors in India.
