Hour Glass almost empty
The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists’ Science and Security Board recently updated their clock to reflect the dangers facing the world. They currently say that it is three minutes until midnight (doomsday). However, they don’t seem to be taking into account the ongoing dangers of nuclear energy, throughout the entire fuel cycle.

So, if it is three minutes to midnight, excluding the dangers of nuclear energy, which both legally and illegally leaks lethal bio-accumulative, and environmentally accumulative, radionuclides into the environment, then it must be one minute or less from midnight, if we include nuclear energy.

In particular, those areas which are already highly contaminated from nuclear accidents and weapons testing, such as much of Europe, could not take another major accident. Can the world even take one more nuclear accident? To even speak of it sniffs of the concept of winnable nuclear war. We may be one earthquake, one defective nuclear reactor, or one incompetent nuclear construction worker, or operator-technician from the end.

It is also important to recognize that upkeep of nuclear weapons (Life Extension Programs (LEP) requires the production of new radionuclides. It also makes more nuclear waste. It’s not like the nuclear warheads can just sit there, unfortunately. Nuclear reactors provide these radionuclides. Nuclear energy was devised as a cover for this production. Hence, the two are linked.

Tritium is a heavy isotope of hydrogen and a key component of nuclear weapons, but it decays radioactively at the rate of 5.5 percent each year and must be replenished continually. This is accomplished by recycling tritium from exist-ing warheads and by extracting tritium from target rods irradiated in nuclear reactors that are operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Recycled and extracted gases are purified to produce tritium that is suitable for use.http://www.srs. gov/general/news/factsheets/tf.pdf

Nuclear warheads are often carried on nuclear submarines, which also legally leak into the environment.

At some unknown moment in the future, dilution as the solution will no longer work. If dilution is currently working is fairly debatable. Prior to the widespread use of x-rays and radionuclides there was little cancer, according to statistics. Recall that the use of x-rays and radium pre-dated the nuclear age. Recall, as well, that there is usually a significant time-lag between radiation induced damage and a cancer which is detectable.

This is from the official Bulletin of Atomic Scientists Press Release: “The opening paragraph of the statement from the Board reads as follows: ‘In 2015, unchecked climate change, global nuclear weapons modernizations, and outsized nuclear weapons arsenals pose extraordinary and undeniable threats to the continued existence of humanity, and world leaders have failed to act with the speed or on the scale required to protect citizens from potential catastrophe. These failures of political leadership endanger every person on Earth.’ … The last time the Doomsday Clock minute hand moved was in January 2012, when the Clock’s minute hand was pushed ahead one minute from six to five minutes before midnight. Since its creation in 1947, the Doomsday Clock has been adjusted only 18 times, ranging from two minutes before midnight in 1953 to 17 minutes before midnight in 1991. The last time the Doomsday Clock was at three minutes to midnight was 1983, when ‘U.S.-Soviet relations were at their iciest,’ according to the Bulletin.http://thebulletin.org/press-release/press-release-it-now-3-minutes-midnight7950

Japan continues to be unwilling or unable to clean up contaminated water which comes from cooling its failed nuclear reactors: “Fukushima operator to miss deadline on decontaminating water Posted:Fri, 23 Jan 2015 05:14:29 GMT TOKYO (Reuters) – The operator of the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co, said it would not be able to meet a self-imposed deadline to decontaminate water containing highly radioactive substances by the end of March.http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/environment/~3/Era0A8XJR4g/story01.htm

Who is currently responsible for the water cleanup failures at the Fukushima site? Is it still Energy Solutions, run by former investment bankers, and/or French government owned Areva?

At what point will the Pacific be unable to cope with the Fukushima disaster? It has already been heavily impacted by nuclear weapons testing, as well as the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
