When Nolan Peterson said on Fox News that police were afraid, he was referring this time period:
10 Officers Shot as Riots Worsen in French Cities By CRAIG S. SMITH, Published: November 7, 2005
PARIS, Monday, Nov. 7 – Rioters fired shotguns at the police in a working-class suburb of Paris on Sunday, wounding 10 officers as the country’s fast-spreading urban unrest escalated dangerously.
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/07/international/europe/07france.html

While we continue to be appalled by Paris Mayor Hidalgo’s proposed lawsuit against FOX, and her apparent allergy to free speech, we are shocked by the carelessness of Daniel Pipes, who seems to be the one responsible for making ZUS (Sensitive Urban Zones) synonymous with No-Go Zones. He is a Harvard Ph.D. who was the son of a Harvard Ph.D. He is famous so his words carry weight. [Update: He used to be known as a right wing academic, a quarter of a century ago; now he is apparently well-known as simply right wing of questionable intelligence.]

His faux pas goes back to ca 2006. Thus, he could have easily asked by e-mail what a ZUS is. It seems to include urban renovation, though the French don’t make it easy to find out, and we’ve no time to dig deeper. How many Ph.D. dissertations did his mistake make it into before he finally corrected it? How many books? Pipes was already famous over 20 years ago. Anyone would have answered his e-mail request. If he would have read about ZIPs and ZUPs he might have better understood, or if he requested maps. ZIPs were, and maybe are still, priority industrial or industrialization zones, if we recall correctly. The “I” can also mean “intervention”. We weren’t making this up in yesterday’s post. We were laughing at planning with no change, except a name change-ZIP, ZUP, ZUS. This should be a separate issue from any “no-go zones”. Pipes could have written to people at a university sitting by a ZUS zone – there is at least one. While zone is a pejorative word meaning slum (ghetto) in street French, it also has a similar meaning to US zoning. The funny thing is that one of the ZUS zones has an important Justice court, as can be seen on the map and now on google. So, while no-go zones may exist within some ZUS, they are not ZUS. Pipes more recently has said that he doesn’t feel endangered in the ZUS he visited. This, however, is meaningless. There are areas in the US which feel safe and which in fact are very dangerous, especially at night. [Update: Pipes is Jewish but speaks Arabic and looks like a cross between Nasser and a vampire cartoon. So, he’s hardly a litmus test for an Islamic extremist neighborhood. We propose as litmus test if women, especially unveiled women, feel safe. Another litmus test is what is going on between 3 and 5 am? It’s not if you can go eat lunch in a neighborhood or wander around in daylight. We conclude that the man is not very intelligent, which reflects poorly on Harvard.]

What FOX says about France doesn’t matter so much. However, mistakes made by an academic or by newspapers like the New York Times DO matter. They end up in academic research and books and taught at universities. Pipes is apparently at the origin of the FOX mess-up. The NYT had government plants telling lies about President Aristide. That was serious and even deadly.

Here is the ZUS which includes the Court, Palais de Justice, as can be seen on the map Red outline is the ZUS. A university backs onto the ZUS.

That Palais de Justice has doors shaped like a guillotine, when they are shut at night!

This is what some of the ZUS housing near the Palais de Justice looks like. These used to be called cabbages by the locals.

Oh, remember Haiti’s PM Lamothe? At one time he wanted to sue those who said negative things about him. His mother studied in Franco’s Spain. Free Speech! Hello Mme. Hidalgo! Free Speech! Franco’s dead, remember?

New Post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/01/23/france-muzzles-free-speech-public-debate-frighteningly-it-is-not-alone-in-europe/ The state of the world is always full of shockers, it seems. It will actually be fun to watch Paris Mayor Hidalgo sue FOX news, but her attitude reflects an apparently deep French (and Spanish, for she IS Spanish) allergy to free speech and public debate, also reflected in AREVA’s continual lawsuits against anti-nuclear activists. Is the Spanish Inquisition still active? Insulting the Spanish crown is still a criminal offense. You can now insult the President of France, without it being a criminal offense and Queen Elizabeth II. If you travel in Europe or live there, read and make sure you don’t end up in jail for insulting a King or Queen! Who knew? Oh, Hidalgo wants to institute ID cards for Paris! She said some blah, blah about Paris pride, but for any thinking person it appears an attempt to keep the suburban poor out of wealthy Paris proper.

Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence” Speech delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr. at Riverside Church in New York City on April 4, 1967: http://www.commondreams.org/views/2015/01/19/beyond-vietnam-time-break-silence
It was ghost written or co-written by his friend of 10 years, Dr. Vincent Harding, as explained here: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/01/22/ex-speechwriter-confidante-dr-vincent-harding-on-dr-martin-luther-kings-courageous-and-overlooked-antiwar-and-economic-justice-activism/ King’s style is not only for beauty, but as a teaching tool. It’s a style for oral cultures where remembering stories is important. There’s a lot of repetition, for this reason. So, after 10 years, Harding probably knew many of King’s phrases and style by heart, as well as the man.
There is a lot of King in the speech, unless Harding was writing the whole time!

Exclusive: Newly Discovered 1964 MLK Speech on Civil Rights, Segregation & Apartheid South Africa. MONDAY, JANUARY 19, 2015. Read and listen here: http://www.democracynow.org/2015/1/19/exclusive_newly_discovered_1964_mlk_speech
A few excerpts: “I must say to you tonight that I never intend to become adjusted to the madness of militarism … for in a day when Sputniks and explorers are dashing through outer space and guided ballistic missiles are carving highways of death through the stratosphere, no nation can win a war. It is no longer the choice between violence and nonviolence; it is either nonviolence or non-existence. And the alternative to disarmament, the alternative to a greater suspension of nuclear tests, the alternative to strengthening the United Nations and thereby disarming the whole world, may well be a civilization plunged into the abyss of annihilation.

He also points out: “And somewhere along the way it is necessary to see that human progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals who are willing to be co-workers with God. And without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the primitive forces of social stagnation. And so we must help time, and we must realize that the time is always ripe to do right.

The speech was done for a British audience and provides historical context going back to the arrival of blacks in America in 1619, one year prior to the arrival of the Pilgrims.

He states regarding the need for boycott that “In a world living under the appalling shadow of nuclear weapons, do we not recognize the need to perfect the use of economic pressures? Why is trade regarded by all nations and all ideologies as sacred?

He mentions the boycott of gold and oil to break the South African apartheid system:
If the United Kingdom and the United States decided tomorrow morning not to buy South African goods, not to buy South African gold, to put an embargo on oil, if our investors and capitalists would withdraw their support for that racial tyranny that we find there, then apartheid would be brought to an end.
(Boycotting South Africa was promoted from 1959: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Apartheid_Movement )

New Post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/01/21/nuclear-lobbygate-amec-nmp-labour-uk-politicians-for-hire/

UK Green Party Nuclear Policy:
EN261 We will cancel construction of new nuclear stations and nuclear power will not be eligible for government subsidy; the Green Party opposes all nuclear power generation and is particularly opposed to the construction of new nuclear power stations, electricity from which is likely to be significantly more expensive per unit supplied than other low-carbon energy sources, and too slow to deploy to meet our pressing energy needs. Cancellation will avoid the costs and dangers of nuclear energy and waste being passed on to future generations long after any benefits have been exhausted.

EN262 Money earmarked for new nuclear plant research, development and construction will be reallocated to energy efficiency measures and renewable energy infrastructure, but sufficient funding for decommissioning redundant power stations, and for research into the safe storage or disposal of existing radioactive waste stockpiles will be retained.http://policy.greenparty.org.uk

New Post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/01/20/theodore-parker-on-the-lack-of-morality-of-the-controlling-class/
Nuclear power will destroy the planet, if it is not stopped, and the waste properly secured. Thus, it remains a moral issue.

Agnotology (formerly agnatology) is the study of culturally induced ignorance or doubt, particularly the publication of inaccurate or misleading scientific data. The neologism was coined by Robert N. Proctor,[1][2] a Stanford University professor specializing in the history of science and technology.[3] Its name derives from the Neoclassical Greek word ἄγνωσις, agnōsis, “not knowing” (confer Attic Greek ἄγνωτος “unknown”[4]), and -λογία, -logia.[5] More generally, the term also highlights the increasingly common condition where more knowledge of a subject leaves one more uncertain than before. A prime example of the deliberate production of ignorance cited by Proctor is the tobacco industry’s conspiracy to manufacture doubt about the cancer risks of tobacco use. Under the banner of science, the industry produced research about everything except tobacco hazards to exploit public uncertainty.[5][6] Some of the root causes for culturally induced ignorance are media neglect, corporate or governmental secrecy and suppression, document destruction, and myriad forms of inherent or avoidable culturopolitical selectivity, inattention, and forgetfulness.[7]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnotology (Emphasis added).

German taxpayers will probably have to help pay for nuclear decommissioning

Any surprises there? The companies take the profit and leave the liability. Germany’s big Nuclear Energy Co’s E.ON, RWE, EnBW and Vattenfall have 36 billion euros ($42 billion) set aside for nuclear commissioning, which Reuters says may now not be secure. It also probably won’t be enough. Compare to £110bn (143.37 billion Euro), or even double, estimated for the UK. Japanese taxpayers must pay for Fukushima, while TEPCO turns a profit. On 7 Nov. 2012, Bloomberg reported that TEPCO was asking for $137 billion for Fukushima cleanup. Some give a much higher figure; some lower.

Why was the Fukushima water storage tank empty? We can’t be surprised that someone fell and died. Someone fell at a radioactive waste processing plant, in Tennessee, a few months ago and died. Within the last couple of years someone fell into a drain and died at a nuclear power plant in South Korea. Fukushima workers are poor, homeless, and exposed to a lot of radiation. So, the question is why was the tank empty? And, why are we still operating nuclear reactors that will make new Fukushimas? Where will the workers come from for other cleanups? Homeless are reported as disappeared from Tokyo. They are almost certainly kidnapping people from poor countries or tricking them into going to Japan.

Martin Luther King took inspiration from India’s Gandhi. A few days ago the Russian nuclear power plant, in India, at Koodankulum tripped after only 18 days of commercial operation. The community has been peacefully opposing this nuclear power plant going back to 1988, when the agreement to build it was signed. https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/01/19/standing-at-the-threshold-70-years-of-nuclear-is-enough/ https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2015/01/19/defective-russian-nuclear-reactor-in-india-tripped-after-18-days-of-commercial-ops/

Judge Ruling Allows BP to Pay Less for Gulf Oil Gusher-Spill

US Chemical Safety Board (USCSB) States that “a reported” 5 Million Barrels of Oil Spilled (http://youtu.be/FCVCOWejlag), but judge rules that it was less, while apparently not understanding the technicalities of the arguments!

(Eleven and a half minute video. If you get tired of technical details after the initial pictures you can fast forward to 10.24 to see the conclusion and more pictures. Some will be very, very interested in this video. It explains that other oil wells could be at risk.)

A former federal prosecutor of environmental crimes, David M. Uhlmann of the University of Michigan Law School, called the decision ‘a major victory for BP’ because it reduced the company’s potential liability by billions of dollars.” (“Judge’s Ruling on Gulf Oil Spill Lowers Ceiling on the Fine BP Is Facing“, By JOHN SCHWARTZ, JAN. 15, 2015, http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/16/business/energy-environment/judge-sets-top-penalty-for-bp-in-deepwater-horizon-spill-at-nearly-14-billion.html?_r=0)
(Emphasis our own)

Controlled Burn of BP’s Oil gusher

Actually it wasn’t a leak or spill, it was a gusher. Perhaps the fact that they burned off the oil has something to do with why there were fewer barrels? How about the clean air act?

Swiss National Bank SNB
Swiss National Bank
Recall that the wife of the previous Swiss National bank head, Philipp Hildebrand, made a profit over the suddenly weakened Swiss franc (from pegging the it to the Euro). He “claimed to have no knowledge of the transaction“. See: “Thomas Jordan – ‘the most hated man in foreign exchange?’The central bank chief’s decision to reverse his pledge not to abandon the Swiss franc cap has made him instantly unpopular in Switzerland“, by Angela Monaghan, The Guardian, Thursday 15 January 2015 16.46 GMT http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/jan/15/thomas-jordan-swiss-national-bank-chief-profile

Now who REALLY believes that Hildebrand’s wife didn’t know about the devaluation of the Swiss franc ahead of time and benefit from it intentionally? They don’t talk to each other? Even those with a tiny bit of money benefit from currency fluctuations. There must have been some legal loophole or others benefited from the knowledge and are protecting him!

Investigation dropped against former SNB head
NOV 23, 2014 – 13:57 http://www.swissinfo. ch/eng/investigation-dropped-against-former-snb-head/41130676

So, the investigation was dropped less than two months ago, and the new SNB head suddenly reversed Hildebrand’s action leading to a rapid revaluation of the Swiss franc! Companies dependent on the export market need to demand an investigation.

As a consequence, a Swiss banking group can snatch up Coutts’ International branch on the cheap. The timing just happens to COINCIDENTALLY be PERFECT!? Coutts is entirely owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland, itself 84% owned by the UK, due to a bailout. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coutts The Royal Bank of Scotland was founded to take care of the bribes paid by England to Scottish parliamentarians to vote for Scotland to merge with England. (1707 Acts of Union). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Royal_Bank_of_Scotland Coutts is the Queen’s bank so they aren’t selling the UK part of the bank.

Yes, the Swiss are bankers and accountants, with a few small farmers thrown in.
Many of the workers in their industries drive across the border and their unemployment is a problem for France, Germany and Italy and not for Switzerland. So, if those people lose jobs because a strong Swiss franc makes exports harder, they don’t really give a damn anyway. The Swiss just send their worker-slaves home. Those same Swiss bankers can continue to buy up assets all over the world. The Swiss National Bank also increased the cost of keeping a Swiss bank account. Who Rules Switzerland? Bankers.

According to Reuters (2015/1/15), a financial institutions banker pointed to a potential competitive advantage for Swiss groups bidding for Coutts International Bank (owned by Royal Bank of Scotland), which would come with the increased value of the Swiss franc. A source close to Xavier Niel, who just bought Orange Switzerland for 2.3 billion euros reportedly noted that “without doing anything, you suddenly end up with an asset worth much more than what you bought it for“. Swiss “Sunrise” could also gain. See “ Pending deals seen unaffected by Swiss franc leap“, Thu Jan 15, 2015 9:22pm IST” http://in.reuters.com/article/2015/01/15/swiss-snb-ma-idINL6N0UU27320150115 The pending deals referred to are some other ones.

It also cut a key interest rate from -0.25% to -0.75%, raising the amount investors pay to hold Swiss deposits.” (“Swiss franc soars as Switzerland abandons euro cap“, 15 Jan 2015) http://www.bbc.com/news/business-30829917

India says “Help Wanted”! (See Reuters below) We volunteer Fareed Zakeria to return home and he can even tell Modi which funerals he should go to. Fareed, and some other people from India, need to understand that “American Indian” has nothing to do with India. Maybe a start is to learn the difference between the “West Indies” and “East Indies”. People from India are not the indigenous people of America, as he seems to think.

China appears to want to benefit from French State owned Areva’s anticipated demise, and become the new nuclear monstrosity. NO! NO! NO! 70 YEARS IS ENOUGH! In fact, 70 years is too much! BASTA!
