Top recipient Rio Tinto “affiliate” campaign donations – Sen. John McCain See: https://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/summary.php?id=D000028746&cycle=A
He clearly sold a mine worth probably trillions of dollars for $7,500. There’s no other explanation. Arizona State geologist says it is worth about 80% of copper mined in Arizona, which is about 5.4 to 5.5 billion dollars per year. That is copper only but there is molybdenum reported, as well as some gold unreported and almost certainly silver and possibly uranium. The Arizona geology web site wrote 1.3 million pounds but clearly meant tons since copper is only worth a bit over $3 per pound but around $7,000 per metric ton (currently it is lower). http://azgeology.azgs.az.gov/article/minerals-and-mining/2011/09/2010-arizona-mining-review
There is obviously a high cost of getting it out of the ground and the cost of mine-building is huge. They built the deepest shaft in America for the mine BEFORE it passed Congress. But, they will surely make a killing. And, the copper grade reported is over twice that at Mirador, which people have been killed over recently in Ecuador.

McCain was a member of the Keating Five, so it’s not the first time he has contributed to the fleecing of the American people: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keating_Five But, Keating sounds far more generous than Rio Tinto. Of course, one of Rio Tinto’s mining business partners, Freeport McMoRan, is a big McCain donor.

Most of Japan’s potatos are from Hokkaido. http://gain.fas.usda.gov/Recent%20GAIN%20Publications/Potatoes%20and%20Potato%20Products%20Annual_Tokyo_Japan_10-18-2010.pdf Hokkaido got Fukushima radioactive fallout. See Le Cong Hao,et. al.”Radiocesium Fallout in Surface Soil of Tomakomai Experimental Forest in Hokkaido due to the Fukushima Nuclear Accident” While they were importing some pre-Fukushima, they probably import more now.

What happened to McDonald’s using local produce? They don’t want to get in trouble for selling radioactive French fries, brought to them by AREVA MOX Fuel at Fukushima?

Longshore workers slow down on the US West Coast means Japan can’t get non-radioactive French fries from the US, or presumably less contaminated fries. Those who want to open the nuclear reactors had better get to eating those radioactive Japanese fries! Keep that slowdown going. Make it a full strike. It’s been several years so the radiation has certainly had time to seep down to potato level. Potatoes are root vegetables for those who don’t know.

Collapsing construction in Vietnam. Doesn’t look promising for constructing nuclear reactors, and especially not for underground nuclear waste infrastructure. Most or all geology is complicated, and it leaks. In wetter climates it leaks more. Underground infrastructures require pumping of water. This, in turn, can destabilize the area. Without pumping it floods. The idea of abandoning underground nuclear waste is fraudulent and dangerous. Underground infrastructure requires constant monitoring, forever.

New post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/12/16/us-public-subsidies-for-companies-456000-on-average-to-create-a-job/
It is amazing how almost totally French state owned companies like AREVA and EDF get huge subsidies from the US and UK governments, as well as propped up by the French taxpayer. Unfortunately the French state owned part is not discussed in the article. Since it is an as-is, no derivatives article we comment here.

News Flash: John McCain’s own mother was 7 days old when Arizona became a state! So, he knows very well that the land which he and other Congressional members gave to Rio Tinto (aka Resolution Copper) is Apache land and that 1912 wasn’t long ago! His mother is still alive. However, he comes from a long line of those who were at the forefront of grabbing American Indian lands, in the last of Choctaw territory (Mississippi 1830), in Oklahoma Territory where Choctaw were sent and many died en route; probably elsewhere. Ancestors do count, especially when you perpetuate their nasty behavior. He’s a nasty too faced piece of work. Except he hasn’t shown much of the non-nasty lately. The American Indians were in Congress in 2011 and 2013 testifying against this project. McCain probably won’t live to be 102 simply because at the rate he and others are contributing to the destruction of the earth, no one will. At any rate he doesn’t look as young as his mother did when she was 80.

We added the following, along with some additional information to yesterday’s post (re the UN criticizing governments for involvement with uranium mining in Namibia during the Apartheid era – saying that it was illegal):
The Netherlands recognized the legitimacy of ‘Decree No. 1’ of the Council for Namibia, the legal administering authority for Namibia set up by the United Nations. The so-called Decree No. 1 for the protection of the Natural Resources of Namibia (1974) made any exploitation of Namibian natural resources without consent of the Council illegal. Dutch government representatives reassuringly declared that no Namibian uranium was being enriched at the Urenco/Ultracentrifuge Nederland plant in Almelo. The facts proved them wrong, as was shown by Dutch anti-apartheid organisations in 1978. In the 1980s the issue dragged on both in and outside parliament, and in 1986 the Council for Namibia summoned Urenco to court in the Netherlands (the case was dropped when Namibia became independent).http://socialhistory.org/en/dossiers/anti-apartheid/1980s-7

New Post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/12/15/rio-tinto-irans-rossing-uranium-mine-the-uk-and-apartheid/
The recent give-away (“land swap”) by the US Congress of Apache sacred land in Tonto National Forest to Rio Tinto has made Iran’s sharing ownership of the Rossing uranium mine with Rio Tinto, topical again. Apparently spear-headed by Sen. McCain and Congressman Gosar, it exposes the outrageous hypocrisy of McCain and Gosar who pretend to oppose any nuclear ambitions by Iran. This is all the more so, since it was sneaked through in a Defense bill. Gosar can actually be an Iranian name, although Congressman Gosar alleges it is not.

Considering that the nuclear weapons states have so many in their leadership who are mean-spirited and/or not too bright, one can’t blame other countries for wanting weapons to protect themselves. McCain appears of the mean-spirited variety. Don’t know what’s wrong with Gosar.

Arizona Copper mine
Arizona Copper Mine

If you wonder where all of the “children” coming across the US southern border are coming from – look at the land grabs for mining and petroleum in Mexico, Central America and South America. The so-called “children” look like teens in the pictures and certainly over 12 years, which is traditionally no longer a child and if they are over 15 they are not children under Swiss law.

The US government missed the part about being bankrupt and that policing the world is a terrible idea.

All of the UK’s Trident subs and warheads are located near Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, at Faslane. The triggers are located in a fairly new (1992) bunker on the opposite side of the island, diagonally, in London-Westminster. More worrisome, upkeep seems to be now by French gov controlled Thales who couldn’t even manage a battery (see Dreamliner case). Boeing was also responsible in that case. Didn’t we just hear that Boeing is involved in the US nuclear weapons? Need to double check. Faslane’s something to think about if you are one of the 40 million diaspora Scots estimated by wikipedia and wanted to return home to visit. The majority of the Scots don’t want the nuclear weapons there but the UK government prefers them far, far away from themselves!

The so-called land swap between the US govt. and Resolution Copper constitutes a massive land grab by a Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton subsidiary, reportedly orchestrated by McCain and sneaked into the Defense bill. Arizona only became a state in 1902. There are people still alive who were alive then! That’s nothing historically. We wonder if McCain might buy that fancy house up by Dounreay, Scotland? You know, the one which the owner is selling because hot particles were found on the beach? Lovely house and location.
Sandside House near Dounreay
There’s even a Golf Course nearby! What say you Sen. McCain? You can leave the American Indians alone!

The Russian Gov has owned a major diamond mining company since the Cold War! Good chance that plenty of American women who married at the peak of the Cold War have Russian engagement rings from this hole! How ironic and tragic! Their diamond rings were supporting Cold War Russian militarism (and often paid for by US militarism), in a marketing scam. Other countries seem to prefer other stones or none. Don’t buy diamonds! No diamonds or diamond mining is needed. Industrial diamonds can be synthetically made and are largely used in mining and in metal cutting anyway.
Russia Diamond Mine
Besides destroying the earth and supporting nasty people like De Beers, the Russian government and others, diamonds are a bad investment for resale from what we’ve read. Don’t buy metallic jewelry or stones either! If you must buy, buy old, used (sterilize earrings), but better to leave it for others. People have been killed for gold mining in the past and continue to die, as seen in today’s post. The American Indian Trail of Tears and Wounded Knee I had to do with gold mining. Wounded Knee II with uranium. During the California gold rush they killed Indians systematically. The above mine is on land belonging to a people much more closely related to American Indians than to Putin.
ALROSA (Russian: АЛРОСА)– is the Russian group of diamond mining companies, which has the leading role in the world diamond mining by volume… In 1963, the first sales contracts between the USSR and De Beers group were signed. In 2009 this cooperation was brought to an end as contrary to European Union competition laws…” Ownership (Nov. 2013): Russian Federation represented by the Federal Agency for Management of State Property 43.9%; the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), 25%, 8 municipal districts (uluses) 8% http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ALROSA

There is a new scheme, which will make the US liable in the event of Japanese nuclear accidents and vice versa: “Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage” which may or may not have been approved by Japan. If approved it makes the US liable for accidents in Japan at 99 cents per Japan 42 cents, as well as Japan liable for US accidents at 42 cents per US 99 cents, and both liable for accidents in Morocco (where Rosatom is building a reactor), Argentina, and Romania. The pay in is based on how much (installed) nuclear power you have. After a certain amount of damages it kicks in, similarly to Price Anderson, it seems. It sounded like Moniz wants to make it retroactive. It lets all makers off the hook and leaves only the operator and taxpayers in signing countries liable.

African Minerals Mining Company in Sierra Leone, in extreme debt, who will clean this mess up in a rainforest?
What is the sulfur yellow from?
African Minerals Mine near rainforest reserve
Based on their maps, this is the African Minerals mine. It is near a rainforest reserve and online documents indicate that they put a railroad through the rainforest reserve to transport the ore. The mine itself appears to have been built in non-reserve rainforest, but still rainforest.
Farangbaia Forest Reserve is a forest reserve with a rainforest ecosystem in Sierra Leone. The Reserve covers an area of 1,260 hectares, is located approximately 10 km to the south-east of the town of Bumbuna and forms part of the catchment area for the Seli River. Since the outbreak of Sierra Leone civil war in 1991 much of the reserve has become farmland and bush forest and there a number sawmills operating there.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farangbaia_Forest_Reserve

As for South Stream being “dead”, it appears re-routed. Some news says that German Wintershall (BASF), EDF and ENI will maintain their partnership with Gazprom for the Black Sea portion, which has already started, anyway. They just won’t build the European part.

Swiss immigration vote flop brings relief but no resolution
Posted:Mon, 01 Dec 2014 18:10:04 GMT
ZURICH (Reuters) – The Swiss government avoided a new headache on Sunday when voters rejected a popular initiative to impose radical immigration curbs, but the result is unlikely to lend it any leverage in talks with the European Union related to migration. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/fL8v98iXGE0/story01.htm

Note in the above: “In 2012, Switzerland received the highest migration flow relative to its total population in the OECD, which is made up of 34 Western countries… the government must address public concerns about immigration among a population that voted for EU migrant quotas in February“. There is also the issue of terrain – it is a mountainous country.

A rainbow from Machu Picchu to Düsseldorf
Blogpost by Sven Teske – 1 December, 2014 at 19:53
Peru! What comes to mind when you think of Peru? Right! The mysterious Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, which attract and inspire so many people from around the world, and still have scientists puzzling over their origin.
Last night, Greenpeace paid tribute to the old Inca culture, also sometimes referred to as the enlightened ones. They believed in the positive energy of the sun, and so do we.
Act for the Climate! Go Solar!
“Act for the Climate! Go Solar” was the message we projected onto Huayna Picchu, the mountain that overlooks the ancient city. Why here and why now?
Today, the twentieth UN climate conference (COP20) begins in the Peruvian capital, Lima.
This is the last major round of negotiations before a new climate treaty is expected to be agreed in Paris in a year’s time – a treaty that could pave the way to a global energy transition away from fossil fuels and towards 100% renewable energy.
What’s giving this conference and the energy transition an added boost is that the costs of wind and solar energy have fallen considerably over the past few years. In many countries renewable power plants are now cheaper and produce energy at a lower cost that fossil power plants. Nuclear energy is losing its allure as it proves to be expensive, dangerous and unsustainable.

LAST CHANCE-URGENT, Last chance today to object to the US government subsidizing the nuclear industry as clean energy. It is dirty from start to finish and besides producing dangerous radionuclides during the entire fuel cycle, it uses diesel for the mining and transport of the uranium and also uses energy during enrichment and for cooling or reprocessing used fuel. Additionally, there are dangerous radionuclides legally and sometime illegally emitted the entire time, and there is no solution offered other than diluting them or burying the waste and hoping it will be the problem of someone else. Note that they could store the waste properly but are clearly unwilling to spend the money.

The US EPA comment period deadline is regarding a final, or close to final, rule and there have been over a million comments, so this is probably more like a vote.

It is important to put this docket ID number on your comment: EPA-HQ-OAR-2013-0602; and to ask them to remove nuclear power support from Clean Power Plan.

Until Monday you can comment directly at the US Regulations web site (comment can be anonymous) here (Dec. 1, 11.59 ET deadline ): http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=EPA-HQ-OAR-2013-0602-0001
