Saturday, 1 November 2014 – All Saints Day

Most of the “Basic Material News” from Reuters deals with Burkina Faso. So, we opted to do a separate post, for now, rather than adding much to the Ongoing Saga post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/11/01/gold-mining-poverty-debt-militarism-and-revolt-in-burkina-faso/ Blaise Compaoré killed his friend Thomas Sankara on the 15th of October 1987 and has ruled gold rich Burkina Faso ever since.

All Saints Day Sanok, 1 November 2011, by Silar, CC-BY-SA-3.0 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Saints’_Day

On the Origins of Halloween, All Saints and All Souls Day FestivalsSamhain (pronounced /ˈsɑːwɪn/ sah-win or /ˈsaʊ.ɪn/ sow-in Irish pronunciation: [sˠaunʲ]) is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of the year. It is celebrated from sunset on 31 October to sunset on 1 November, or about halfway between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice… Samhain is mentioned in some of the earliest Irish literature and is known to have pre-Christian roots…. Samhain (like Beltane) was seen as a liminal time, when the spirits or fairies (the Aos Sí) could more easily come into our world… In the 9th century, the Roman Catholic Church shifted the date of All Saints’ Day to 1 November, while 2 November later became All Souls’ Day. Over time, Samhain and All Saints’/All Souls’ merged to create the modern Halloween. Historians have used the name ‘Samhain’ to refer to Gaelic ‘Halloween’ customs up until the 19th century.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samhain

Mining in Australia’s Economy
Since we read endless articles about mining in Australia and the mining appears to be destroying Australia’s fragile ecosystem, it’s time for a reminder about mining in the Australian economy: “Mining produces about 10 per cent of Australia’s GDP, but employs only 2 per cent of its workers. Much of the activity now is in mining construction, but that is capital-intensive too.” (Emphasis added) Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-opinion/our-economic-irrationalism-20120312-1uwde.html
The Australian economy is dominated by its service sector, comprising 68% of GDP. The mining sector represents 10% of GDP; the “mining-related economy” represents 9% of GDP – the total mining sector is 19% of GDP. Economic growth is largely dependent on the mining sector and agricultural sector with the products to be exported mainly to the East Asian market.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Australia

Sellafield: the most hazardous place in Europe
Last week the government announced plans for a new generation of nuclear plants. But Britain is still dealing with the legacy of its first atomic installation at Sellafield – a toxic waste dump in one of the most contaminated buildings in Europe. As a multi-billion-pound clean-up is planned, can we avoid making the same mistakes again?

Two New Posts:
The US NRC States: “On October 26, at 8:24 p.m. EST, Honeywell Metropolis Works experienced a leak of UF6 inside the Feed Materials Building (FMB). The initial indication was a chemical alarm near the UF6 cold traps. An operator noticed on the room monitor video screen a haze in the air inside the fourth floor of the FMB. This haze indicated a UF6 leak. The leak occurred during a routine sublimation and draining of a cold trap. Honeywell operators implemented emergency procedures to shut down and evacuate the FMB. Emergency responders reentered the FMB to isolate the cold trap and stop the leak. Honeywell stated that the haze in the FMB was cleared by 8:55 p.m. EST. An “All Clear” was declared by Honeywell at 3:16 a.m. EST on October 27. Members of the public outside the plant reported a cloud emanating from the building for five minutes before the mitigation spray towers were activated by Honeywell staff. The plant is currently shut down. No injuries were reported.http://pbadupws.nrc.gov/docs/ML1430/ML14300A675.pdf (Emphasis our own)

Regarding Kyushu Electric, which owns and operates the Sendai Nuclear Power Station, as well as the Genkai Nuclear Power Station discussed below:
In a long-standing, ongoing scandal, Kyushu Electric Power Company has admitted to ordering 150 employees to attend a public townhall-style meeting on nuclear power in Saga in 2005, in order to sway the results. Records show that the Kyushu employees comprised 83% of the meeting’s audience and contributed more than 50% of the public comments, including “Nuclear power is needed to maintain standards of living” and “There is no solution to the energy problem other than nuclear power.” This newest scandal follows revelations last year that in 2011, employees were ordered to submit emails expressing support for nuclear power to a television show designed to measure public opinion on the issue. Former Kyushu President Toshio Manabe was forced to resign in the wake of that scandal; the company’s Chairman was also forced to step down.http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/news/Blogs/nuclear-reaction/fukushima-nuclear-crisis-update-for-march-26t/blog/44528/

In the USA real estate developers are alleged to have hired people to pack public meetings, it would not be surprising if the nuclear industry does the same.

Swiss Tax “Migrant” Transoceans’ Rig Afire in the Gulf of Mexico

The only “economy” which might be “damaged” by the ECOPOP referendum could be Switzerland’s ability to draw in tax avoiding companies to the central areas such as Zug and even that is doubtful, as the referendum still allows for 16,000 new workers to migrate per year. Transocean, whose rig was at the center of 2010’s catastrophic US Gulf of Mexico oil spill, has only 12 workers in Zug.

Deepwater Horizon Investigation Secures Second Guilty Plea, $1.4 Billion in Proposed Penalties, January 7, 2012
Transocean Deepwater Inc. has pleaded guilty to violating the Clean Water Act in connection with the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, joining British Petroleum (which entered guilty pleas to wildlife and other criminal charges last fall) in acknowledging responsibility for this environmental disaster. As members of the Deepwater Horizon Task Force, Service special agents and other Federal investigators have worked since April 2010 to document Federal crimes committed in connection with the spill.

In September 2009, its Deepwater Horizon rig established a 35,050 ft (10,680 m) well, the deepest well in history – more than 5,000 feet deeper than its stated design specification.[19]

Over the years, Transocean has moved its incorporation location to take advantage of lower taxes in some jurisdictions. Transocean was originally incorporated in the US state of Delaware, but moved its corporate registration to the Cayman Islands in 1999. In 2008, it moved its registration to the canton of Zug, Switzerland, where it is currently incorporated. Only 12 of its employees work in the Zug office, according to a company spokesperson. The registration move allowed Transocean to lower its corporate income tax rate from 35 percent in the US to 16 percent in Zug.[20]

August 2011: Transocean Announces $2.23 Billion Takeover Of Aker Drilling, 15 August 2011. Aiming to supplement its drilling fleet in the harsh arctic environment, US drilling giant Transocean Ltd (RIG) plans to acquire Norwegian drilling rig operator Aker Drilling ASA (AKD.OS) at a 62% premium to current valuation in a deal valued at $2.23 billion. Under the transaction, Transocean, which owned the rig at the center of 2010’s catastrophic US Gulf of Mexico oil spill, has made a voluntary NOK26.50 ($4.83) per share cash offer for all outstanding shares in the company.[21]” (Emphasis our own). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transocean

Patronage is therefore a recognized power of the executive branch. In most countries the executive has the right to make many appointments, some of which may be lucrative (see also sinecures). In some democracies, high-level appointments are reviewed or approved by the legislature (as in the advice and consent of the United States Senate); in other countries, such as those using the Westminster system, this is not the case. Other types of political patronage may violate the laws or ethics codes, such as when political leaders engage in nepotism (hiring family members) and cronyism such as fraudulently awarding non-competitive government contracts to friends or relatives or pressuring the public service to hire an unqualified family member or friend.” (Emphasis our own). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patronage

Wind farms outstrip nuclear power
The UK’s wind farms generated more power than its nuclear power stations on Tuesday, the National Grid says.

About Yamal, where French Total and other oil companies have projects, From “Is there a life after oil? How Indigenous people have to share their lands with oil companies” by Greenpeace:
Greenpeace Life after Oil Yamal
The operation of oil industry here, as everywhere in Russia, is absolutely ignorant in relation to environmental protection and Indigenous peoples’ rights. Oil spills and other pollution are poisoning water resources and destroying the traditional habitat of Indigenous groups, hence – depriving them of their traditional sources of living. As a result, traditional lifestyle of these communities is dying and the culture of these people is dying with it accordingly.” Entire document here: http://greenpeace.org/sweden/Global/sweden/greenpeace/dokument/lifeafteroil.pdf
Also from the document:
Yamal Oil Greenpeace http://greenpeace.org/sweden/Global/sweden/greenpeace/dokument/lifeafteroil.pdf

Yamal location Google
If it wasn’t clear before, after the BP Gulf Oil Spill it should be clear that drilling for oil and gas creates human and animal victims. Little known is that it brings to the surface and concentrates naturally occurring radionuclides (NORM), creating what is properly called TENORM (Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radionuclides), which should be left safely underground! Most often TENORM is misleadingly called NORM.

Regarding Yamal-Total from last summer:
UPDATE 1-Novatek says sanctions strain funding for Yamal LNG Posted:Thu, 31 Jul 2014 16:05:50 GMT
* Russian companies access to Western capital is limited due to sanctions (Changes headline, releads, adds detail, quotes)

Total CEO Margerie who was killed was working on one of 2 major Yamal projects:
Margerie was returning to Paris after a meeting with the Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev at his dacha near Moscow following a business leaders’ meeting in Gorky. The two men had been discussing investments in Russia amid the 2014 pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine and the resulting Western sanctions on the country related to the stand-off in Ukraine.[2]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christophe_de_Margerie

Total is not nice people: In 2014 Gabon said that Total owed them $805 million in unpaid taxes for the period of 2008 -2010 http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_(entreprise)

Total CEO Margerie death: Who done it?

It is almost certain that this death of Total’s CEO was an assassination. The question is only “who done it”. We don’t know but, for those interested, it is worth looking at possible conflict and competition between the two Yamal projects and within them. It may be worth seeing if there is a competition between North Stream Pipeline, which seems to involve Yamal, and South Stream Pipeline which involves EDF (Electricity of France).

While Putin appears perfectly capable of assassinations, as appears his grandfather (cook for Lenin, who some think died of poisoning), there are other possibilities within Russia and without. Russia and France are good places to start, though not the only places. Probably it wouldn’t take much scratching below the surface to have a good idea of who his enemies might be. One suspicious thing is that it was said that the snowplow driver was drunk and his family replied that he didn’t drink! Also, it appears to be a major airport which should be used to fog and snow conditions.
