We have three new posts. And, no we haven’t changed permanently away from nuclear. This blog, however, has its roots in Haiti and surface mining – deforestation. The Ebola outbreak is related to surface mining-deforestation.

Duvalier’s death is historic. Unfortunately Duvalier has a son, so the world probably isn’t done with the Duvaliers. In the past it was hypothesized that Duvalier wasn’t going to be put on trial because there may be things which the “powers that be” want to keep hidden. It’s difficult to see what that could be, except perhaps related to allegations of Haiti being used as a hub for drug import-export. There were claims that Haiti was to be used as a nuclear waste dump. But, why bother when you can send the nuclear waste to Tennessee, Utah, Texas, and the Scottish Highlands? Then, of course, there is the question of who the “powers that be” would be. Are they within Haiti or without? Duvalier looked old and in poor health for 63, but one cannot but wonder if his death was really natural.

Two posts on Duvalier: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/10/05/the-fight-for-justice-continues-in-haiti-after-the-death-of-the-ex-dictator-jean-claude-duvalier/ https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/10/04/haiti-justice-denied-by-duvaliers-death-ex-dictator-under-investigation-for-crimes-against-humanity/ The second article is a Human Rights Watch no derivatives article, or we would have merged the two together. The first is translated from a French Alterpresse article.

New post on deforestation and malaria: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/10/05/forestry-malaria-control-in-italy/ The Ebola outbreak is probably related to deforestation and habitat disruption caused by surface mining, along with population movement, some of which is related to mining.

If Ebola comes to Mali it won’t be by the road, it will come through the mining areas,” health officer cited in Reuters, below.

Solar Rules (Reblog): https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/10/03/nuclear-heartburn-even-iea-says-solar-could-become-worlds-dominant-energy-source/

New Post: An explanation of the relationship between deforestation and mining and bats. The World Health Organization points it out! https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/10/04/ebola-mining-and-bats-without-borders-plus-people-without-borders/

Almost one year ago, we reminded everyone of the role of deforestation in bringing new diseases out of the forests and into the rest of the world: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2013/10/27/yeti-yeetso-and-yakuza-monsters-deforestation-and-selling-our-birthright/

Governments and people should not be too complacent in the so-called developed world about Ebola. It seems that not everything is known about it. While the opportunity for good hygiene is present in the “developed” world, hospital hygiene is absent in many places due to lazy incompetence (or insanity). Most African villages appear pretty isolated, which is probably one thing which has restricted its spread until now. The so-called developed world is well-connected and so disease can travel more quickly. Only time will tell how many west Africans have fled Africa out of fear of Ebola. It’s a historical classic – those fleeing plagues out of fear, spread it!

Six months ago Reuters reported:

According to Reuters: “Under EU rules, chemicals must be proved to be safe before they are used. In the United States, chemicals must be shown to be harmful to be banned.
Why doesn’t this hold for radionuclides? It has saved Europe from ridiculous, dangerous, airport scanners, which don’t even show what they are intended to show. Since they aren’t proved safe, they aren’t allowed in the EU. While the US leaves the front door open for terrorists, even at the White House, they torment and sometimes x-ray travelers. Back-scatter x-ray is still x-ray. The radio-wave scanners are safer, but are they safe? Why don’t they use passive scanners like Italian airports and country borders?

Savannah River Site Waste May Continue to Await for Years on the Surface at WIPP, while US Gov Tries to Bring More Nuclear Waste (from Germany) to the Savannah River Site!
WIPP recovery will cost a lot more than Obama’s BRAIN initiative! How much would it cost to see where Obama’s brain ran off to? Did Moniz ever have one to lose? Or, does Moniz plan to move to his wife’s birthplace of Brazil, when the northern hemisphere becomes inhabitable?

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to simply use one’s brain and
a) get out of the nuclear business and then to
b) design a proper, monitored facility in hardrock or a solid above ground concrete bunker (not cheap but necessary). Waste On-Site at WIPP
Currently, there are 144 waste containers (with a volume of 129 cubic meters) safely stored aboveground at WIPP in the Waste Handling Building, awaiting disposal. None of this aboveground waste is part of the nitrate salt waste stream. These 144 waste containers had been received from DOE sites, but had not yet been emplaced when the February 5 fire event occurred, leading to the suspension of WIPP operations. The inventory also includes non-nitrate salt wastes from Los Alamos National Laboratory, as well as wastes from Idaho National Laboratory and the Savannah River Site in South Carolina

Wylfa on Life Support? One of the World’s Oldest Reactors (1971) Given Life Extension
Wylfa NPP UK

The Wylfa Nuclear Power Station is situated just west of Cemaes Bay on the island of Anglesey, North Wales. Its location on the coast provides a cooling source for its operation. Wylfa houses two 490 MW Magnox nuclear reactors, “Reactor 1” and “Reactor 2”, which were built from 1963 and became operational in 1971.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wylfa

There’s no accounting for stupidity and we doubt that Obama’s “BRAIN” initiative is going to help (re) instill common sense.

New Post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/09/26/tennessee-as-radioactive-waste-dumping-ground-fact-sheet/
Elvis Home, Graceland, in Memphis Tennessee
Graceland streetview approach
Tennessee is on the list of places that 85% French govt. owned EDF might want to send its radioactive waste from its 15 UK Nuclear Reactors, and possibly from any of its reactors (which could bring the total to around 85 – especially concerning since EDF France has 9 reactors being decommissioned with currently no place to go). The information about the consultation is here: http://www.sepa.org.uk/about_us/consultations.aspx The EDF documents on Hunterston and Torness give names of some locations, where they might send nuclear waste. “Responses to the consultation should be sent in writing no later than 3 October 2014 to either The Registrar Scottish Environment Protection Agency Angus Smith Building Parklands Avenue Eurocentral Holytown North Lanarkshire ML1 4WQ Or registry.angussmith@sepa.org.ukhttp://www.sepa.org.uk/about_us/consultations.aspx

Tennessee is one of the few states that allows dumping of low-level nuclear waste in landfills and the only state that allows dumping of nuclear waste on a single-license, rather than seek government approval for each shipment of waste“. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studsvik Studsvik sold its Tennessee facilities to Energy Solutions. Nonetheless, Studsvik still has information on its web site regarding Bulk Survey Release in Tennessee. The permit which was held by Studsvik and presumably is now held by Energy Solutions allowed 90 radioisotopes. Testing appears to be done only for gamma radiation. Alpha emitters, dangerous upon ingestion, would appear not picked up by the device used. This is serious as Torness, for example, mentions 4 GBq/tonne of alpha and 12 GBq/tonne for beta-gamma in its solid waste. That would be 4 million becquerels (radioactive disintegrations per second) per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of dangerous alpha emitters (e.g. plutonium, americium), which might pass through unaccounted for, unnoticed! That is for one facility only.

Some of the items which EDF mentions a need to dispose of, which happen to be the same as Studsvik mentioned as part of its Tennessee Bulk Survey for Release permit: Paper/Plastic, Wood, Metals, Aqueous Liquids, Oils/Grease, Resins/Sludges.

In Scotland, French govt. owned (85%) “EDF has applied to allow the receipt of radioactive waste on to both stations for interim storage and onward disposal. These wastes will have arisen at other EDF Energy nuclear power stations, and the intention is to allow for the accumulation of economic loads prior to disposal.” From: “SCOTTISH ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION AGENCY, RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES ACT 1993, Application by EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Limited for Changes to the Authorisation covering the disposal of Radioactive Wastes from Hunterston B and Torness Power Stations, CONSULTATION DOCUMENT FOR DISCRETIONARY CONSULTEES AND THE PUBLIChttp://www.sepa.org.uk/about_us/consultations.aspx

Tennessee is on the EDF list of where it may send waste “Intermediate Level Waste” off-site for treatment such that its final waste form can be “categorised as Low Level Waste and is suitable for disposal“. Sites may include Lillyhall UK; Germany; Sweden; Tennessee, USA; and other UK facilities both named (4 more) and unnamed, as well as any new UK or overseas facilities. If the waste switches from Intermediate to Low Level it should mean that the balance of the radionuclides went someplace or were diluted. Alternatively, it could mean that because the US has nothing called intermediate level waste that only the name is changed. Or is it because, in the US, the testing for radioactive waste is only done by a gamma tester, in bulk? Is this true elsewhere?

Distance from former Studsvik, now Energy Solutions, Nuclear Waste Facility on President’s Island to Elvis Home of Graceland.
Studsvik Energy Solns to Graceland
The Studsvik facility on President’s Island in Memphis is the only place in the U.S. where radioactive steam generators from pressurized water reactors are taken for processing or dismantling. These units are up to 70 feet tall and weigh as much as 800 tons. These must be taken apart, piece by piece to separate the parts that are highly radioactive. These contain a significant amount of plutonium and other dangerous radionuclides. Much of the material deemed to be “extremely low level” by Studsvik will end up in the North or South Shelby landfills“. http://www.nonukesyall.org/Tennessee_rad_waste.html
