The fightback against France’s EDF-the nuclear industry is ramping up. EDF’s existence as an almost completely French government owned company is already unfair business practices, and then the UK government proposes to subsidize a new EDF nuclear reactor at Hinkley Point. If the EU allows this UK subsidy to go through, then Austria has promised to launch a legal challenge: https://lucian.uchicago.edu/blogs/atomicage/2014/09/25/austria-to-launch-legal-challenge-if-eu-approves-british-nuclear-plan-via-the-telegraph/
The North Ayrshire Council doesn’t like the looks of the EDF plans for Hunterston: http://www.newsforscotland.com/news/north-ayrshire-council-attempts-to-block-hunterston-nuclear-waste-plans But, is anyone opposing the same EDF plans for Torness?

Moorside from Scafell Pike if 3 npps added by Marianne Birkby
Moorside from Scafell Pike, if the proposed 3 New Nuclear Reactors by Toshiba-GDF SUEZ are built in Cumbria. Painting by Marianne Birkby of Radiation Free Lakeland:
Radioactively contaminated seawater would be drawn from the Irish Sea for cooling. Deposition from vapours and particulate matter emissions from cooling towers would fall on Lakeland. The visible vapor plumes associated with cooling towers can rise more than 5,000 feet above the towers (ie above the Lakeland fells) and extend as far as 9 miles downwind.” Read more here: http://mariannewildart.wordpress.com/2014/09/24/you-too-can-have-a-lakeland-view-like-this-all-you-have-to-do-is-nothing/ The Irish Sea is one of the most radioactive bodies of water in the world. Using it for cooling will mean that the steam coming out of the reactors is even more radioactive! Beware Europe. Look at the fallout from the Windscale disaster in Cumbria and see how badly a disaster at the triple proposed new nuclear reactors in Cumbria, or a disaster at Sellafield, could impact widespread areas. London wasn’t spared! Almost all of the UK was impacted; all of Denmark, much of Norway and Sweden; the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland; Latvia and Lithuania were all impacted. Map is here:
Windscale fallout underestimated“, by Rebecca Morelle, Science reporter, BBC News Saturday, 6 October 2007, 23:02 GMT 00:02 UK
The Windscale piles provided material for nuclear weapons
The radioactive fallout from a nuclear accident that rocked Britain 50 years ago was underestimated, scientists say

It’s not over yet. The fight’s only just begun! The UK needs support, especially from other potentially impacted countries.

Can anyone really believe that Scotland could have been worse off at Independence than it has been under the rule of Westminster?

What was lost was a clear chance to be nuclear free, as opposed to shackled to the UK nuclear arsenal, UK leaking nuclear subs, nuclear waste and nuclear power plants. As radiation builds up in the environment:
For lo! the days are comin whan they wull say ‘Happy the barren! the wombs that bare-na,…” /”Than wull they begin to cry to the mountains, ‘Fa on us!” (Gospels in Braid Scots, Paisley, 1924) [“For, behold the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare,…/Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us“, KJV]

So regarding voting No for independence and the impact of staying chained to Westminster on the environment, one can only say “Faither, forgie them; for they see-na what they are doing!” (Gospels in Braid Scots) [“Father forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (KJV)]

Although Paisley voted Yes, for Independence, Renfrewshire overall probably voted “no”, because they’ve jobs tied to the nuclear industry, including recent ones related to Hunterston overhaul: Doosan Babcock
European headquarters are in Renfrew, Scotland…
As a specialist provider of nuclear decommissioning services, Doosan Babcock has managed decommissioning projects at sites around the UK, including Sellafield, Faslane and Bradwell. The company offers techniques and processes for the removal of radioactive waste and the remediation of nuclear facilities. It is at the forefront of waste encapsulation technologies.

West Dunbartonshire voted for independence. But, their Councillor Lawrence O’Neill reportedly stood outside of the polling station with a “no” to independence sticker. Isn’t that illegal since he’s an official, plus near the polling station? Anyway, someone thought to stick a “yes” sticker on him, which at least would be balanced for a Councillor, and the jerk O’Neill claimed he’d been assaulted because a “yes” sticker was stuck on him!

US low level waste comment deadline Monday.

New Post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/09/13/low-level-nuclear-waste-exemptions-uk-us-perspective/ Outlines scary UK policy on low level waste, which could inspire US NRC.

Dubbed “Independent Island” by Reuters. Exemplifies what an independent Scotland could do with renewables, if it frees itself from the UK nuclear yoke.
(Reuters article is below).
Independence Island

We updated yesterday’s post https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/09/12/scotland-a-sensible-high-level-nuclear-waste-policy/ with the following info:

The Scottish Enlightenment was characterized by “rejection of any authority that could not be justified by reason
Prior to the UK, Scotland had more universities than England,
By the 17th century, Scotland had five universities, compared with England’s two.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Enlightenment
Scotland even developed a school of philosophy called “Common Sense Realism” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Common_Sense_Realism
You will be amazed at how dependent most are on Scottish inventions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_inventions_and_discoveries

Clearly Scotland does not need to be part of the UK. It may want to be part, but it does not need to be part. It would be terrible to be married to UK politicians. They are like the nightmare spouse full of nothing but threats! Union should be based on respect and be two parties who can stand on their own feet. Instead the UK gov has even asked businesses to issue threats, it seems.
And, Westminster wants to belittle Scotland. Fears of leaving the UK are similar to fears of leaving an abusive spouse with whom you have children. The cross-border relationships, especially along the border, are the family. But, Scotland can and should welcome the Borders to go along with them, if they go. They are tied together historically, and family-wise. Northern Ireland can go with either Ireland or the Scotland. They have historical and geographic ties to both.

The monetary debate is rather silly too. Scotland had the Scottish pound before there was a United Kingdom. There’s no reason they can’t have something called a pound, just like Canada and Australia have a dollar, which are not the US dollar. Apparently they can use the English pound too, if they want, they would just have no control over policy.

While sorting through the UK low level waste policy to see what the US NRC may have up its sleeve, this statement regarding Scottish High Level waste was found: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/09/12/scotland-a-sensible-high-level-nuclear-waste-policy/ It includes the policy for England and Wales too.
Reblogs: Has excellent letter regarding the problems of clean water access: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/09/11/more-on-texas-brines-waste-toxic-water-dump-plan/
More on what everyone needs to be worrying about with nuclear waste: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/09/12/radioactive-waste-dump-is-born-without-fanfare-or-fuss-the-banality-of-evil/

This should make clear that nuclear everything in the US and UK ARE indeed related. This is last October at Sellafield. The US DOE isn’t in the picture because the budget crisis impeded their travel. But, various US National Labs, run by private contractors, were at Sellafield:
US and Sellafield by USDOE

(Today’s news continues after reminder)
Reminder that the US NRC comment period for Low Level Waste ends next Monday, September 15, 2014: “Comments must be filed no later than September 15, 2014“. As we have seen, “Low Level” is a misnomer and includes very dangerous radionuclides. http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=NRC-2014-0080-0002
While we hope to come back to the topic, especially the law itself, the law is available to start studying here: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2011-title10-vol2/pdf/CFR-2011-title10-vol2-part61.pdf and here: http://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/10/part-61 . The only thing which we found to have changed since the 2011 version is here: http://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/10/61.25 (You can double check at http://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/10/part-61 ). As we have seen the NRC site has at least one serious error, still not corrected.

Anti intuitive: Fukushima is actually bad for tombstone business! Japan already has a low birthrate. The radiation will lower it further. As in many European countries you have to pay for upkeep of a grave spot in Japan. No descendants means no one to keep up the tomb. So, why buy one? More and more are being cremated. One more way to spread radiation around – scattering ashes in the ocean. Fukushima undermines the whole ancestor “worship”, i.e. honouring your ancestors, too. No descendants is no one to honour you!

Beaver, US NPS gov
Credit: NPS

Beware when the US NRC speaks of “engineered barriers”. Do NOT think high-tech NASA, but rather think more of a NOT very industrious, in fact a lazy, beaver. Beavers are said to rush to repair any leaks that they hear or feel, dropping whatever else they are doing. It is doubtful that this is the case for the low level waste dumps. However, leakage IS currently supposed to be monitored for 100 years or sometimes 300 years. And, attempts are supposed to be made to keep water out. While that sounds bad, it is better than what the NRC and nuclear industry surely are eyeing, which is to dump in landfills and forget it.

A loophole in the rule appears to be, or have been, exploited by the state of Tennessee, however, which seems to be, or have been, dumping to landfills. Although we aren’t certain, it seems that they are bringing in nuclear waste that is supposed to be less than a becquerel per kg, but then either concentrating it through incineration or it is concentrating itself due to sheer quantity, or simply because they are not verifying. They are only checking the paperwork, it seems. Recall that in the US, food that is less than 1,500 Bq/kg is not monitored by the FDA. (The UK has a very low level “dustbin” category, which is then sent in bulk to landfills for controlled release into the water.)

The nuclear power and weapons industry and the government agencies that promote, oversee, and regulate nuclear activities are trying to save money by allowing large amounts of man-made, radioactively contaminated materials and property to be redefined as not radioactive. They don’t want to pay to try to isolate nuclear waste, including metal, concrete, asphalt, plastic, soil, equipment, and buildings, so they have developed ways to send the waste to regular landfills or even into commercial recycling that could end up in daily-use items the public makes contact with regularly“. http://www.projectcensored.org/14-mainstreaming-nuclear-waste/

Under the current system, the DOE and other nuclear waste generators either release contaminated materials directly or send their waste to processors who can then release it from radioactive controls to landfills, to recyclers or to auction for reuse…. Tennessee which licenses companies to bring nuclear waste into the state where it is then processed and in some cases “redefined” as not radioactive or as “special.” It can then be sent to regular trash dumps or other facilities. This opens up the potential for the materials to enter the recycling stream to make everyday household items or to be used to build roads, schools, and playgrounds“. http://www.nirs.org/radwaste/outofcontrol/outofcontrol.htm (Study is at link)

So, while putting nuclear waste in a mound or hole sounds really bad, putting it in a concrete lined trench with a clay cap and monitoring it is better than just putting it in a landfill; digging a hole and dumping it like a kitty latrine. Or, putting it in a waterway. Sellafield, in the UK, says that it is allowed to dump 2,000 kg of uranium per year into the Irish Sea but dumped “only” 340 kg in 2012. So-called Depleted Uranium, a radiological and chemical poison, is a big issue for this US low level waste consultation.

What is needed are truly engineered and easily monitored storage facilities. But, that would cost money and the nuclear waste companies are in it for profit. Energy Solutions is run by investment bankers, formerly tied to Goldman Sachs. When you read words like streamlining and facilitating disposal, this is probably code for dump nuclear waste and do not monitor, i.e. no regulation.

Beaver Dam Yellowstone US NPS gov
Credit: NPS

Beavers monitor and do upkeep on their projects, whereas the nuclear industry wants to simply dump into landfill and forget the required upkeep!
beaver dams are not permanent and depend on the beavers’ continued presence for their maintenance… they are persistent in repairing damage to the dam
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_beaver
Video discussing video behavior and how they rush to repair leaks:http://youtu.be/1cyPyEQ4OHI

Nuclear waste facilities must have upkeep like beaver dams must! Nuclear waste is very dangerous for a very long time. Low Level Waste is a misnomer and includes very dangerous radionuclides, such as plutonium and americium. The becquerels per kilogram are supposed to be less than transuranic or high level waste, but if it is all placed together in a landfill, it would concentrate.

Unlike nuclear waste, beavers are generally beneficial for the environment. http://nsf.gov/discoveries/disc_images.jsp?cntn_id=126853&org=NSF
