Russia-Putin continue to push dangerous nuclear and dirty tech and use Euro energy dependence as a weapon, as he has for years now. So, it’s not really news. No innovation, nothing new coming out of Russia’s gov these days, it seems. All they can do is push more Chernobyls and Fukushimas on the world. The other major nuclear pushers are the Japanese and the French (EDF-Areva). GE (Hitachi) and Westinghouse (Toshiba) are now Japanese too. But, Rosatom is the only completely government owned nuclear pusher. May Putin and the rest of the nuclear pushers go work to clean up Fukushima. That will solve two problems at once.

Look at just how much of this gold money was NOT invested into basic infrastructure in Burkina. Look how much Burkina “President” Blaise Compaore’ has NOT done for the country, since he came to power after having had his best friend, Thomas Sankara, assassinated in 1987. Probably the school and water pump infrastructure were even paid for by church groups or NGOs. There are leaders who seem to get rich and still have money to build nice schools. Tells you what kind of individual Compaore is! Then, he wants to extend his presidential term. Let’s see, 1987 – that would be almost 30 years he is “President”!

Gold, uranium, etc. Whatever this Embassy Cable says, they’ve been mining gold in Burkina Faso for a very long time. Outside of naming names of mining companies and, occasionally, important officials, it isn’t clear that publishing Embassy cables by officials who may know nothing anyway or be lying is very worthwhile.

Key Points:
— Seven months after the October 2007 opening of a gold mine in Taparko, Prime Minister Tertius Zongo presided over the May opening in Youga of the nation’s second commercial gold mine.
— During his speech, Zongo opined that the opening of the Youga mine was the beginning of a “mining boom” in Burkina Faso, which granted 245 exploration permits in 2007 for gold, manganese, zinc, and uranium.
In addition to the opening of Taparko and Youga, four other mines are scheduled to go into production in 2008 including: Mana gold mine (Canada’s Semafo), Inata gold mine (Canada’s Goldbelt Resources), Perkoa zinc mine (Australia’s Aim Resources), and Kiere manganese mine (United States’ Burkina Manganese).
¶2. Key Judgments:
— Located in West Africa, the world’s fastest growing gold producing region, Burkina Faso is ideal for mineral exploitation. The country’s flat terrain makes it accessible to mining companies and the arid climate oxidizes minerals near the surface. Oxidized mineral deposits found close to the surface are easier to discover and less expensive to produce.
— With geological formations similar to its gold and mineral
producing neighbors, Burkina Faso is considered the country with the greatest untested mining potential in West Africa.
” (Emphasis added) More here: http://wikileaks.org/cable/2008/07/08OUAGADOUGOU602.html The Embassy official appears to be just parroting some mining company web site.

Why isn’t Obama warning of the health hazards of nuclear reactors and processing facilities, which are allowed to emit most radiation into the air (barring one of two radio-iodines, and one other radionuclide – which are slightly restricted) and ALL the radioactive emissions, that they want to, into the water! It has been known for decades that they dump into the water but not that they LEGALLY dump radiation into the Mississippi and other rivers, which reaches the Gulf right exactly where the 2010 Gulf Oil spill occurred… It doesn’t have anything to do with the huge campaign donations from nuclear Exelon, now does it?
[3 June 2014 clarification. The EPA officially has no standards for water emissions from nuclear reactors/processing plants, and only for the two radionuclides for air. The NRC claims to have standards for air and water. However, the emissions checking is done by the company; is self-reporting if it exceeds the limits. Furthermore, there are various exceptions to the so-called standards, especially “hardship” clauses and emergency clauses. There was a grandfathering in clause. The NRC can randomly check the documentation. The nuclear reactors do legally dump some into the river and elsewhere, because some emissions are allowed by the NRC. Furthermore, without actually lying on the documentation they’ve only to let the emission float downriver before testing. This has been reported at a chemical plant along the Mississippi river. So, nuclear power companies probably emit illegally, as well. ]

Portugal in relation to Baltic
Portugal and Germany are doing the next Baltic air policing rotation tours

Why does the USA have to have the backs of Europeans, when European corporations do mostly as they please, and do business as usual with Russia? Some of the Baltic states have a higher standard of living than most Americans enjoy. Perhaps Europe should cover their own backs and kick their own companies into line, starting with Norway’s 67% state-owned Statoil, and the UK’s BP. The US apparently needs to kick Exxon into line too regarding Russia.
Norway’s not in the EU, but it is in NATO and shares a border with Russia.

Many European countries are finally taking increasing responsibility for defending their own borders, for instance by patrolling the Baltic. Several wealthy countries – both without and within NATO-with the most to lose, on or near the Baltic, have evaded equitable responsibility, leaving it to non-Baltic states and to Nanny USA instead. Germany and Poland have been model members who have served in the Baltic more than the USA, Denmark now ties them. The UK has only awakened recently. But, wealthy Norway, who has only done two tours in a decade, is nowhere to be seen in Baltic policing. Sweden has done none! Sweden is in the EU and as such should help defend its borders. Even France who has been busy invading Africa, apparently to protect its uranium and other mining concessions, has served twice as often as Norway. Why should Norway, the UK, Sweden, and other laggards police their own neighborhood, if Nanny America will do it for them? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltic_Air_Policing Nanny needs to let these rich countries police their own borders (or be run over by Putin, if they so prefer). Poland is the only country that seems to really understand what is at stake, and with good reason, given its history! The Baltic has nothing to do with the USA. Why is the US on Baltic police rotation in Norway’s stead? Why is faraway Portugal having to serve for Sweden? Neither Portuguese nor Americans will notice if Putin takes Sweden or Norway or Finland. And, if Sweden and Norway want to be part of Russia, let them go then! Few outside of these countries will notice. The Ukraine is closer to the heart (core) of Europe, than Norway and Sweden, and few seem terribly concerned about the Ukraine being invaded.

We placed most of the Ukraine news together toward the bottom. By paying Russia for the gas, the Ukraine is going to lose its only leverage to get Crimea, and the two giant solar plants in Crimea, back from Russia.
Who did pay, has paid or will pay for those solar plants?

This whole thing of state owned or controlled nuclear and petroleum corporations and the need of the state judicial system to rule for or against them for various things, appears strange. Certainly when the nuclear and petroleum industry buy judges and government – whether legally through campaign donations or illegally – as in the USA also doesn’t work. But, it should not be an either-or. Neither one nor the other seems fair. In particular, today we have Norwegian Courts ruling in favour of 67% Norwegian government owned Statoil for drilling in the Arctic. We have also seen the French courts rule against a French citizen in favour of majority French gov owned Areva. We wouldn’t even know where to start on the buying and selling of judges and politicians in the USA, nor with the apparent buying of politicians in the UK by the nuclear industry. Well, actually we DO know where we would start, with the huge campaign contributions given to US President Obama by Exelon who has the largest “fleet” of nuclear power plants in the US. And, the huge campaign contributions given to US Senator, Chair of the Energy Committee, Mary Landrieu, by companies who benefit from the building of the new Vogtle Nuclear Reactor (Shaw) and the perpetuation of old nuclear plants (Entergy). She also represents the state where Shaw is making parts for the new Vogtle reactor! For the UK we would start, of course, with the head of the Dept of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), Ed Davey, and his brother’s work for EDF. Also, former PM Gordon Brown’s brother works or worked for EDF. In fact, Henri Proglio, current CEO of EDF, has the reputation for employing family members of politicians to get what he wants, according to some French journalists. But, all of this our routine readers know already and it is probably just scratching the surface. Also strange that a Senator from such an oil dependent state as Louisiana (Mary Landrieu) would be allowed to sit as Chair of the Senate Energy Committee. One need only look at this situation in the UK to see why Scotland needs to leave. Is Ed Davey pushing so hard to force a nuclear waste dump upon Cumbria, undermining democracy, so that majority French gov owned EDF can send French nuclear waste to Cumbria? The Scottish Highlands will be next if Scotland doesn’t leave. Scotland should offer the right to return home to all of the Scottish people booted out by the UK-London gov since union, rather than open itself up to English and French and probably German nuclear waste!

Updated post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/26/radioactive-reindeer-nuclear-guinea-pigs-part-x-of-a-series/ (Updated 28 May and 29 May)

New post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/29/impacts-of-suction-dredge-mining-on-aquatic-life-wildlife-and-humans/ This suction dredge mining risks stirring up old radionuclides. We are particularly concerned about deep sea mining, too, for this and other reasons. We wonder if offshore dredge mining could have contributed to the sick seals in Alaska, along with Fukushima? There are sick seals in Japan exhibiting the same symptoms.

BP, Russian gov owned Rosneft’s partner, still continues to attempt to avoid its financial responsibility in relation to the BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill!

Mothers (and Fathers) need to get mad about radionuclides and not just about Roundup! Did researchers test how much radioactive iodine or radioactive strontium or perhaps plutonium is in breast milk? Or, did they only test for Roundup?

Do they know that, as recently as 2008, US Oak Ridge researchers, Leggett and Eckerman, made a computer model to predict doses to babies from breast milk due to both acute exposure of the mother, but also previous intakes during the mother’s life? Included are Cobalt 60, Strontium 90, Cesium 134 and 137, Ir-192, Plutonium 238 and 239, Americium 241 or Cf 252? Where is the model for radio-iodine? It will certainly be there for those living near nuclear power plants, and probably many not so near nuclear power plants. How angry will these mothers be when they learn this?

The Battle of Stirling Bridge was a battle of the First War of Scottish Independence. On 11 September 1297, the forces of Andrew de Moray and William Wallace defeated the combined English forces of John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey, and Hugh de Cressingham near Stirling, on the River Forth“. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stirling_Bridge
The present-day Stirling Bridge
The real question with the independence vote is if Scotland wants to be nuclear free or if it wants a nuclear waste dump forced upon it, like the UK gov is trying to do to Cumbria, against the will of the Cumbrian County Council. If Scotland is smart it will leave the UK gov behind for a nuclear free and nuclear dump free future and if Cumbria’s smart it will leave too. Both were historically separate from England. Cumbria was invaded by England. After being invaded and fighting for its freedom, Scotland got roped back into the “UK” first through a shared king and then through the treachery of its leaders. https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/03/06/for-a-nuclear-free-scotland/ https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/03/24/why-scotland-and-quebec-should-consider-independence/

Chocolate Beats Mining-Oil and Gas

Chocolate in the Morning
Pietro Longhi 025

While we know almost nothing about the new President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, it is clear that chocolate is a healthy, renewable resource. So, we certainly would rather see someone make a fortune in chocolate than in oil and gas or mining or other bad things. In fact, since chocolate acts as an anti-oxidant, it can help protect from ionizing radiation, and other chemical damage (assuming that the chocolate itself isn’t contaminated by radionuclides or other environmental contaminants.) There are many more good things about chocolate too. Too many to be told. Dark organic (bio) chocolate with little sugar is healthiest.

If knowledge of the oil and gas contracts at stake in Ukraine and Crimea didn’t put to bed the notion that Russia has anything to do with ethnicity, take a look at this. This shows the expansion of the Russian Empire and is something we will come back to. Notice Crimea is not included.

Below is a photo of a Siberian Yupik lady, cousin to the Alaska Yupik, historically known as “Eskimos”. It is a no brainer that the kinship ties between this lady and Putin are very ancient if they exist at all. They are both good looking people and they both look out of their eyes, but that’s about it. Rather, Russia is an Empire built by conquest. As an Empire, it exploited and still exploits the gold (and other minerals), oil and gas of the indigenous peoples. The part of Russia closest to Alaska (50 miles, 80 km, away) was not conquered until 1778. Additionally, autonomous Okrug appears a misnomer. They report directly to Moscow and Moscow sends out a governor who is “approved” by local vote. Furthermore, speaking Russian doesn’t make someone an ethnic Russian anymore than speaking English makes someone ethnic English. Both are lingua francas of Empire and trade. There are Russian speaking, blue-eyed, blond, Ukrainian Jews, by the way.

To show what Imperial jerks Russia’s “Nationalists” have been being, they want Alaska back, along with Crimea. No joke.
Not An April Fools’ Joke: Russians Petition To Get Alaska Back by SORAYA SARHADDI NELSON, April 01, 2014 3:27 PM ET http://www.npr.org/blogs/parallels/2014/04/01/297835873/not-an-april-fools-joke-russians-petition-to-get-alaska-back
Excerpt: “Putin’s annexation of Crimea resonated with many Russians, who see him as having righted a historical wrong. Similar sentiments are fueling Russian legal claims to oil-rich Alaska.

What claim? Russians only settled in neighboring Alaska for 70 years. At the height of Russian America the Russian population was 700 people compared to 40,000 Native Alaskans. The US bought Alaska from Russia in 1868, 146 years ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_America
Alaska Purchase (hi-res)
Putin claimed he wasn’t interested in Alaska because it was too cold. Right. It hasn’t been too cold to exploit resources in cold parts of Russia. Of course, the British-Australian-Canadian owners of the Pebble Mine would love it to be Russian so they could just pay off some Russian kleptocrats and not have to deal with the US EPA who is actually doing its job for a change with the Pebble Mine and trying to block it. A rare and amazing thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pebble_Mine The last Russian Czar was Queen Victoria’s grandson and first cousin to Queen Elizabeth II’s grandfather. Queen Elizabeth is supposedly invested in London Blue Chip stocks which would include London based BP, previously known as British Petroleum. Royal Dutch Shell is also a Blue Chip stock. Do we hear a giant sucking noise as resources go to the heart of empire in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and London?

The article below about the Chinese mining tycoon makes an interesting read.
