Our new post is a very short peer reviewed article written by Dr. Yury Bandazhevsky who was persecuted by Putin’s bud (or twin?), Alexander Lukashenko, president of Belarus (for the last 20 years). https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/13/chronic-cs-137-radioactive-caesium-incorporation-in-childrens-organs/ Belarus took the worst hit from Chernobyl and they apparently have chosen the easy way to deal with it – pretend the radiation-radionuclides don’t exist and suppress information which indicates otherwise, as well as persecuting researchers. By now, 28 years later, the Caesium 137 will have degraded by almost half, but there are other more long-lived radionuclides present from Chernobyl, as well.

Belarus’ Lukashenko: Twenty Years as President!!! He’s got Putin beat! Whatcha Know!
Alexander Lukashenko has been the only person who has served as president since the elections in 1994“. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_Belarus
Putin’s been PM or Pres for only about 14 1/2 years.

Members of Amnesty writing on his behalf got Dr. Bandazhevsky out of jail:
Prisoner of Conscience Professor Yury Bandazhevsky Is Free!” August 5, 2005
Amnesty International USA welcomes the good news that Yury Bandazhevsky, a prisoner of conscience and one of AIUSA’s Special Focus Cases, was conditionally released on August 5, 2005. A well-respected scientist, Professor Bandazhevsky had clashed with the Belarusian government over his work on the health impact of the Chernobyl nuclear accident of 1986 on the people of Belarus. He served four years of an eight-year sentence on fabricated criminal charges before his release.” Entire press release is here: http://www.amnestyusa.org/our-work/latest-victories/prisoner-of-conscience-professor-yury-bandazhevsky-is-free Dr. Yury Bandazhevsky moved to France. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yury_Bandazhevsky

Dr. Bandazhevsky’s groundbreaking research on the effects of radioactive cesium upon the children and people of Belarus is not well known in the United States. This is in large part because the government of Belarus chose to persecute him and suppress his work, which threatened to disrupt their plans to repopulate lands grossly contaminated with radioactive cesium. Bandazhevsky was forced to write this study while under house arrest, awaiting many years of subsequent imprisonment and torture. Government agents had already destroyed many of the archived samples, slides and materials that he and his colleagues and students had accumulated during the nine years he was Rector of the Gomel State Medical Institute of Belarus. However, Bandazhevsky had already published much of the statistical data he had obtained in 4 books: Clinical and experimental aspects of the effects of incorporated radionuclides in the body [Russian and English]. Gomel 1995; Pathophysiology of incorporated radioactivity. Gomel, 1997; Structural and functional effects of radionuclides incorporated into the body, Gomel, 1997. Pathology of incorporated radioactivity, Minsk, 1999, as well as numerous articles in the collection of scientific works of the Gomel State Medical Institute“. Chinese slave labourers still trying to get justice from Japanese corporations. Mitsubishi and Nippon Coke (formerly Mitsui Mining) are currently in the cross hairs of a lawsuit.
From an article from almost 8 years ago:
Mr. Abe’s grandfather and political model, Nobusuke Kishi, who was prime minister from 1957 to 1960, oversaw the forced labor program as minister of commerce and industry during the war.” ( “Wartime Chinese Laborers Sue Japan“, NYT, November 15, 2006, by NORIMITSU Norimitsu Onishi http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/15/world/asia/15japan.html?pagewanted=print&_r=0 )
Nippon Coke is still part of the Mitsui Keiretsu:
The primary aspect of a horizontal keiretsu (also known as financial keiretsu) is that it is set up around a Japanese bank. The bank assists these companies with a range of financial services. The leading horizontal Japanese keiretsu, also referred to as the “Big Six”, include: Fuyo, Sanwa, Sumitomo, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, and Dai-Ichi Kangyo bank groups. Putin’s Con regarding Ukraine’s Gas Debt:

Putin alleges that the Ukraine owes Russia 3.5 billion USD ($3,500,000,000). On 10 April, 2014, the Ukraine owed Russia $2.2 billion, according to Reuters. BBC cites Gazprom as saying Ukraine owes Russia $1.7 billion, as of 5th April. These sky-rocking numbers seem to have more to do with Russia canceling their discount and also raising the price of gas both astronomically and arbitrarily than with usage. It is not winter, after all!

Putin submitted to Russia’s State Duma and subsequently signed a law (ca 2 April) which unilaterally cancelled 4 bilateral agreements with the Ukraine. Thus, Russia ceased paying the $530 million ($530,000,000) annual rent for Russia’s military base at Sevastopol, Crimea. Russia would no longer write off $100 million ($100,000,000) of debt for use of Ukrainian waters. While no one specifies if this second is annual, it really must be annual rent.

This means that with the $1.7 billion gas debt, within less than three (2.7) years, it could have been wiped clean and with the current debt, in less than 6 years (5.5) years the debt would be wiped clean, if Putin-Russia wouldn’t have taken over Crimea, and then unilaterally canceled the rent. He took away the gas discount that was included in the agreement, as well.

Additionally, by obtaining Crimea, Putin also obtained some if not all of the Ukraine’s oil and gas rights in Crimea-the Black Sea and effectively blocks access to whatever oil and gas still belongs to the Ukraine. Most certainly the oil and gas would have been sufficient to wipe away the Ukraine’s debt and the Ukraine would also have a non-Russian source of oil and gas. And, then, there are the two solar power plants which the Ukraine lost. (See various references below) If the Ukraine has lost its eastern half now, it has lost even more oil and gas, among other things.

This clearly shows that Russia’s state capitalism currently combines all of the evils of usurious banks, monopoly capital, authoritarianism and militarism rolled up in one tight knit ball, ruled over by Putin (and strangling the poor). This is the reason that neither capitalists nor true socialists have fancied this Stalinist model. France and Areva-EDF, and even Sweden and Vattenfall are of a similar model. In fact, they too are examples of state capitalism run a mock, so there really appears to be little or no difference, except that Areva appears to be using France’s military might to run over Africa, rather than its neigbhors.

This is a quote relevant to Russia both yesterday and today:
Emma Goldman in an article from 1935 titled ‘There Is No Communism in Russia’ said of the USSR: ‘Such a condition of affairs may be called state capitalism, but it would be fantastic to consider it in any sense Communistic… Soviet Russia, it must now be obvious, is an absolute despotism politically and the crassest form of state capitalism economically” (Emphasis added) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_capitalism

And, yet another, this by the “renegade” Karl Kautsky, from immediately after the Russian Revolution:
It is only the old feudal large landed property which exists no longer. Conditions in Russia were ripe for its abolition but they were not ripe for the abolition of capitalism. Capitalism is now once again celebrating a resurrection, but in forms that are more oppressive and harrowing for the proletariat than of old. Instead of assuming higher industrialised forms, private capitalism has assumed the most wretched and shabby forms of black marketeering and money speculation. Industrial capitalism has developed to become state capitalism. Formerly state officials and officials from private capital were critical, often very hostile towards each other. Consequently the working man found that his advantage lay with one or the other in turn. Today the state bureaucracy and capitalist bureaucracy are merged into onehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_capitalism (Emphasis added)

Like Lenin, Putin has “laid the foundation for a new dictatorship in place of the old Czarist dictatorship.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Kautsky It’s simply that Putin mixes and matches elements of Czarist dictatorship and Stalinist dictatorship – so we have a former KGB officer, then chief, wrapped in the robes of the Orthodox Church, but then again, that’s what Putin’s job was as a KGB officer, playing to be someone he was not, in short, an actor. Ahhhh…

This post was updated today: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/03/radioactive-reindeer-nuclear-guinea-pigs-part-ix-of-a-series/

Yesterday we had a new post about the funding of two pro-nuclear organizations by the nuclear industry, and funding of US politicians by the nuclear industry: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/11/nuclear-front-groups-nuclear-matters-and-center-for-climate-and-energy-solutions/

These are reblogs about the agreement for Russian state-owned Rosatom to build two new reactors (Paks II) in Hungary: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/12/viktor-orban-looked-into-vladimir-putins-eyes-and-was-reassured/ https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/12/russia-hungary-and-the-european-union-paks-documents-released/ https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/12/a-brief-summary-of-the-russian-hungarian-agreement-on-the-paks-nuclear-power-plant/

Regarding the head of Rosatom, see: “Russia: Sergei Kiriyenko — Russia’s ‘Kinder Surprise” By Victor Yasmann, February 15, 2006, http://www.rferl.org/content/article/1065790.html It notes, among other things, that his grandfather was KGB and that his mother is/was Ukrainian.

World Needs to Get Ready for the Next Nuclear Plant Accident” By Yuriy Humber, Apr 4, 2014 9:39 AM GMT+0200 http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-04-03/world-needs-to-get-ready-for-next-nuclear-power-plant-accident.html

This is old news, but we are posting it, as a reminder, because of discussions regarding the costs of German Decommissioning:
UK’s nuclear clean-up programme to cost billions more than expected Nuclear Decommissioning Authority declines to predict final lifetime clean-up cost amid fears total bill could exceed £100bn“, by Terry Macalister, The Guardian, Sunday 23 June 2013 19.14 BST http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2013/jun/23/britain-nuclear-atomic-clean-up-decommissioning

Who Will Pay For Germany’s Nuclear Decommissioning? The German Taxpayer or Nuclear Utility Companies?

The Nuclear Power Plant owners will be very happy if the German Government (read German taxpayers) take(s) responsibility. While the utilities have paid into a pool of money, as seen above, the probability of cost overruns are well known. They are so thrilled, that Swedish Government owned Vattenfall (and others) have said that they MIGHT drop their lawsuits against Germany for closing the nuclear power plants early! (See Reuters article below).

But, the very basis of Vattenfall’s lawsuit appears false to us. The two Vattenfall reactors at Brunsbüttel, and Krümmel seem to have constantly had problems and were old. And, their licenses have expired and would need to be renewed. Reportedly, the type of reactors used in Germany (except Grundremmingen) have particularly weak containment and inspection is difficult because the bottom is inaccessible for inspection. Krümmel and Brunsbüttel were shut down in November 2007 because “the causes of events in the nuclear power plants are not completely identified and appropriate remedial measures need to be taken to prevent recurrence”. Brunsbüttel never went back online. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernkraftwerk_Brunsbüttel As for Krümmel: “The first fire in the transformer of the nuclear power plant Krümmel (part owned with E.ON) in 2007 forced a closure of the power plant for over two years, while a short circuit in July 2009 in another transformer led to another closure. Due to these incidents the Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, Peter Harry Carstensen announced that this will be letzter Versuch (their last try) before complete closure of the facility.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vattenfall

The Brunsbüttel and Krümmel reactors were old and fraught with problems. Swedish Government owned Vattenfall suing the German government for closing them down early looks like what lawyers call a “frivolous” lawsuit, without merit, to us. It is a nasty tactic being played by the Swedish government (Vattenfall) against the German people. With all of the problems of these reactors, it would be interesting to know how much profit the Swedish government has or has not made off of them (and how much profit they have made in Germany, period). Whereas, the other utilities are suing within German courts, Sweden is using international courts for Vattenfall. Presumably the other German reactors are old too, and have the same containment issues noted above, with the one exception.

The Vattenfall case has become infamous:
In May 2012 the Swedish energy company Vattenfall filed a request for arbitration against Germany at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), housed at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., because of Germany’s decision to phase out nuclear energy. Vattenfall relies on its rights under the Energy Charter Treaty, an international trade and investment agreement in the energy sector. This treaty, like many international investment agreements, grants foreign investors the right to bypass the domestic courts of the host country and to directly file a complaint to an ad hoc international tribunal to challenge proposed government regulations. Vattenfall is expected to claim well over €700 million in compensation in response to the closure of the nuclear power plants Krümmel and Brunsbüttel.” (Emphasis our own, from “BRIEFING NOTE JUNE 2012 The German Nuclear Phase-Out Put to the Test in International Investment Arbitration? Background to the new dispute Vattenfall v. Germany (II)“, by Nathalie Bernasconi-Osterwalder and Rhea Tamara Hoffmann The entire report may be read here: http://www.iisd.org/pdf/2012/german_nuclear_phase_out.pdf

Politics of USGS Warning

Updated-correction to https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/10/oil-gas-injection-wells-and-earthquakes-in-oklahoma-a-usgs-warning/

We had posted the USGS (US Geological Survey) information quickly and overlooked the politico-economics of it. The USGS appears to place the problem of injection-induced seismicity solely upon wastewater injection, rather than on the more obvious and the profitable hydraulic fracturing. This appears to illustrate that not all US Gov officials are as dumb as they appear. Rather they are sly. But, any and all sly lies will come back to bite them and/or their children personally, whether earthquakes, sinkholes, radioactive waste, etc.

And, perhaps we need to return to calling fracking what it is, fracturing. While water is often used, it is not the only means. The ever-imploding Bayou Corne, Louisiana sinkhole was caused by failures in wastewater injection. The below illustration shows clearly why fracturing induces earthquakes and sinkholes.

Putin: How Quickly We Forget!

For those who want to lionize Putin, because either they are too young to recall, or too absent-minded; also, for those who know people who lionize Putin, since the pro-Putin people are probably no longer with us here (except for Russia gov). Please Read about the Following! Ask yourself the likelihood that someone would make false accusations on their death bed? (Absent-minded though I am, I have not forgotten!)

Poisoned with Polonium 210 (deathbed accusations against Putin)
In his last statement he said about Putin:
…this may be the time to say one or two things to the person responsible for my present condition. You may succeed in silencing me but that silence comes at a price. You have shown yourself to be as barbaric and ruthless as your most hostile critics have claimed. You have shown yourself to have no respect for life, liberty or any civilised value. You have shown yourself to be unworthy of your office, to be unworthy of the trust of civilised men and women. You may succeed in silencing one man but the howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life. May God forgive you for what you have done, not only to me but to beloved Russia and its people.
” (Emphasis added) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poisoning_of_Alexander_Litvinenko (Original, 24 November 2006, 13:18 GMT, “Spy’s death-bed Putin accusationhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6180068.stm

Unfortunately, Mr. Litvinenko over-estimated humanity! Where are the howls of protest? Are we so absent minded or so uncivilised? But, he appears to under-estimate God, as well. Putin will get his just deserts when he dies, if not before.

In this context, it is worth noting (again) that Putin’s grandfather was cook to Lenin, who many believe Stalin had poisoned. And, that Putin’s grandfather was afterwards cook to Stalin. Hence, logic suggests that Putin’s grandfather brought Stalin to power, by poisoning Lenin. While one cannot be blamed for one’s grandparents, often people seem to be even more like their grandparents than their parents. (This makes sense to the extent that people revolt against their parents, who had, in turn, revolted against their own parents!)

Banking and oil trading for Russia would appear to protect Swiss leaders against being poisoned by Putin’s minions, as well.

Putin’s Dangerous Precedent

Putin has set a dangerous precedent by trying to reclaim land previously colonized by Russia, in Ukraine. Not only does it look like Hitler invading to protect German colonists in various lands, but with the obvious exception of Japan, all or almost all countries have large immigrant communities, for one reason or another. Some have allowed mass migration and others are themselves colonial settler states (e.g. Ireland, Americas, Australia) Will the original homelands of migrants now threaten the country which they reside in, as in Ukraine, where Russia threatens the Ukraine on behalf of Russian migrants? This could then happen anywhere. Almost any country can invade the USA or Canada or Australia on these grounds, and Spain and others (e.g. Portugal, Italy, Germany) can invade Latin American countries.

Breaking the world into tiny states could help with democracy and break-down huge militaristic states. But, will we break countries up street by street and house by house on ethnic or religious lines? This was the tragedy of Sarajevo. It is also the tragedy of Northern Ireland. It is one of the tragedies of Palestine-Israel. What if one spouse is one religion and one another? What of the children of mixed ethnic or mixed religious marriages? The only place, of which we are aware, that it seems to have worked out well is when the Swiss canton of Appenzell peacefully divided into protestant (Ausserrhoden) and catholic (Innerrhoden) parts. However, it seems that the religious minorities were allowed to stay: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appenzell_Innerrhoden

A so-called “Peace Line” in Belfast, separating a Protestant and Catholic neighbourhood from each other. The wall runs the length of the Springmartin Road and is about 18 feet high. The compound at the top of the wall is a police station.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_lines (In Northern Ireland, the Irish were so largely displaced by British colonists, that it chose to stay in the UK, when most of Ireland became free. Also, in the Americas and Australia the natives were moved, killed and displaced. This is true for Palestine-Israel, though the thorny question is who was there first and how far back to go and what to do now. For instance, religious identities were not necessarily the same 2,000 plus years ago in the region; diaspora Jews often married into their adoptive communities while in exile; there are the oft-forgotten Palestinian Christians. In fact, we know that religious identities were not exactly the same because there was no Islam and no Christianity, initially. But, some Jews in the region would have converted to Christianity early on and some of those converted, in turn, to Islam. Who was there before the Jewish people claimed the land the first time around – thousands of years ago? Will DNA testing determine ethnicity? And, compared to what? Will it be patrilineal based on the Y chromosome or matrilineal based on the mitochondria? Is it based on the majority DNA, who might be later arrivals or will DNA be compared to those buried in the land thousands of years ago. It is a topic which is far more complicated than anyone dare say. Even in the case of Ireland, ancestors of some of those who became Scottish passed through Ireland on the way to Scotland. And, so some of Scottish ancestry may truly be at home in Ireland. Historically the area surrounding the Irish Sea-Straits of Moyle had ethnic, linguistic and cultural continuity and still does somewhat. What of the non-indigenous who have lived in Ireland for almost 1,000 years? Or in Ireland or the Americas for hundreds of years? Are they Irish? Are they Americans? What of Australians? What of all of the persecuted indigenous peoples? There is even at least one indigenous minority in Japan!)

This post has been updated: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/03/radioactive-reindeer-nuclear-guinea-pigs-part-ix-of-a-series/
New Post: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/10/oil-gas-injection-wells-and-earthquakes-in-oklahoma-a-usgs-warning/ Injection wells can trigger earthquakes along pre-existing fault-lines. Interesting that there is reportedly a lot of fracking, and injection wells, near the WIPP waste facility, which is salt, so if water enters in there is double trouble: the canisters will rust and the facility can collapse. The speed depends on the speed that water enters.

Updates on UK gov Undermining Democracy in Cumbria, England

Update regarding attempts to force a nuclear dump upon Cumbria against the wishes of the County Council and the people they represent:
To say that CoRWM’s recent public meeting in Workington was dissappointing would be a truly masterful piece of understatement!” Posted on May 9, 2014 by cumbriatrust http://cumbriatrust.wordpress.com/2014/05/09/to-say-that-corwms-recent-public-meeting-in-workington-was-dissappointing-would-be-putting-it-rather-mildly/

Reblog: Protest of proposed New Nuclear build in Cumbria: https://miningawareness.wordpress.com/2014/05/10/anti-nuclear-protestors-slam-plans-for-new-power-station/

Not only is Democracy being Undermined in Cumbria, but the Wastwater lake, in the famous English Lake District (National Park), is endangered by New Nuclear Build. Nuclear power plants require a lot of water. The entire Lake District-National Park is endangered by the proposed deep geological repository, as well, due first to surface work and later to the dump itself.
Wast water
Wast Water or Wastwater is a lake located in Wasdale, a valley in the western part of the Lake District National Park, England. The lake is almost 3 miles long (4.6 km) and more than a third of a mile (600 m) wide. It is the deepest lake in England at 258 feet (79 m), and is owned by the National Trust. It is one of the finest examples of a glacially ‘over-deepened’ valley.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wast_Water

Whoops Switzerland does it again! They’re not that Innocent, as they arrogantly play! Nor Neutral. As they did with Nazi Germany, so today does Switzerland undermine sanctions on Russia, regarding Ukraine. It is believed that approximately “75% of Russian exports of crude oil and oil products are managed through Geneva“. http://www.tradingforum.unige.ch/modules/trading/general_information/trading_hub.html So Switzerland certainly has power on this and other matters, which is completely disproportionate to its size and population (8 or 9 million).

It is important to recall that without Banks (and usually trade) no leader, whether good or bad, lasts for long. Without Swiss Banks turning stolen gold into clean Swiss francs to be used by Germany to access products on the global market, the Third Reich would not have lasted for long, subsequent to sanctions. And how many countries were run over by Hitler, with the support of Swiss industry and banks?

When Switzerland helped Nazi Germany circumvent sanctions, this is a tiny part of what happened:
St Paul after the Blitz
St. Paul’s Cathedral after the Blitz
Probably the most devastating strike occurred on the evening of 29 December, when German aircraft attacked the City of London itself with incendiary and high explosive bombs, causing a firestorm that has been called the Second Great Fire of London… Civilian casualties on London throughout the Blitz amounted to 28,556 killed, and 25,578 wounded.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blitz

If Italy or Germany or France or Austria decides that they lust after Switzerland and its wealth, all should turn blind eyes, as Switzerland is now doing for the Ukraine. If there is ever justice this side of the grave, no one wants to be near Switzerland when it happens.

The Russian Czar supported Switzerland’s Reemergence as an Independent State after Napoleon Ran it Over. But, Switzerland won’t do the same for Ukraine: “After the Napoleonic Wars (1792–1815), Russia supported Switzerland’s re-emergence as an independent and neutral state.“:
In 2014, Switzerland and Russia celebrate 200 years of diplomatic relations. Russia is a priority country of Swiss foreign policy…
In 2014, Switzerland and Russia can look back on 200 years of diplomatic relations. After the Napoleonic Wars (1792–1815), Russia supported Switzerland’s re-emergence as an independent and neutral state. In 1814, Tsar Alexander I appointed an envoy to the Swiss Diet for the first time. A few years later, Switzerland opened an honorary consulate in St Petersburg. Since 1906, Switzerland has been present in Russia with a diplomatic representation.
Diplomatic relations with Moscow were broken off following the October revolution in 1917 and restored after the Second World War. Since the signing of the bilateral MoU in 2007, relations have deepened. A high point was the state visit of the then Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, in 2009. Demographics of Leaking WIPP Nuclear Dump
2010 US Census Hispanic Population by County

We already showed you the highly African-American demographics of the Savannah River site, where Germany wants to send some high level nuclear waste from an experimental Pebble Bed reactor that had had an accident in the 1980s, and Obama is willing to take it!

From our understanding, the US non-commercial nuclear waste is being moved from other US facilities to WIPP and the Savannah River site. Additionally Savannah River appears to be getting some waste from other countries! Due to government secretiveness and sending waste from one country to another to be “reprocessed”, it appears that the origins of the waste is sometimes unclear. The German waste is a special case in that it would be shipped straight from the facility in Germany to Savannah River. See http://www.srswatch.org for more information. You may recall that Japan sent nuclear waste to Sellafield UK to be reprocessed and then Japanese protested its return to Japan. We often see the Germans protesting nuclear waste being shipped from France, but it seems that this is German waste which the French reprocessed and is being sent back.

Is it an accident that the leaking, half-ass, WIPP facility is located in New Mexico where the population is predominantly of Hispanic/Latino-Mexican origin? In 2010, Hispanics or Latinos, of any race, in nearby Carlsbad, New Mexico were 42.5% of the population, compared to 16.7% of the national population (2011). Overall New Mexico is 46.3% Hispanic-Latino (2010) compared to 42.1% , in 2000. WIPP opened in 1999. WIPP is located in Eddy County, in the southeast corner of the state, bordering Texas, and is 44.1% Hispanic or Latinos of any race, compared to 16,7% of the national population. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddy_County,_New_Mexico

Re-entry personnel confirm damage to magnesium oxide bags” May 1, 2014
Video and photographs taken during yesterday’s entry confirmed that several magnesium oxide bags in Room 7 of Panel 7 were damaged. Each magnesium oxide bag weighs between 3,000-4,200 pounds. They are placed on top of waste containers during disposal operations to prevent the radioactive material from releasing into the environment over a 10,000-year period, ensuring long-term safety of the repository.
The cause of the damage to the bags is still unknown. Eyewitness accounts from employees and video documentation from Wednesday’s entry also confirmed there are no issues with the roof or walls in the disposal room.
