Tuesday 1 April, 2014 UTC-GMT

Note the dates on this are 31 March 2014 and 12 February 2013. This is no Aprils’ Fools, though it is foolish people who came up with the idea of using salt for storage of radioactive wastes! Using salt caverns for the storage of other things may not be too bright either.

Second Update of 31 March, 2014 UTC-GMT (Beware April Fools’)

As it is still just barely March 31, UTC-GMT, we are quickly posting this to replace April 1st news. April Fools’ Day is celebrated in many places around the world and mainstream media has even played tricks on this day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Fools’_Day Since, some recent news looks like a prank anyway and to be certain, we are avoiding this most obnoxious day. Any news dated by media as April 1st will not be posted until at least April 3rd UTC. By then it will hopefully be clear if something is a prank.

News items which look like April Fools’ but are not, as seen by the date, include concerns that Putin may be eyeing occupation of other countries, which used to be part of the Soviet or Russian Empires.
Putin also wants to regain Finland
March 29, 2014 at 06:54, Updated: March 31, 2014 at 09:03
The outside world does not understand Putin’s worldview. If Putin is not stopped in Ukraine, he will restore Russia’s historical boundaries and incorporate also the Baltic countries and Finland. The sharp warning was given by Andrej Illiaronov who for six years was one of Putin’s closest advisers.” Original Swedish here: http://www.svd.se/nyheter/utrikes/putin-vill-aven-aterta-finland_3413872.svd

Is there any historical, cultural or linguistic basis for Putin taking Crimea or Finland? No! We find no legitimate basis for Putin taking Crimea. If the population is now slightly majority Russian and majority Russian speaking, this is a historically new thing and rather suggests that any Crimeans who feel Russian should return to their Russian motherland, for they are late historical arrivals. If Putin is concerned for their cultural well-being then he needs to welcome them back to their indigenous Russian homeland and leave Crimea and indigenous Crimeans alone! “Crimea and adjacent territories were united in the Crimean Khanate during the 15th to 18th century before falling to the Russian Empire and being organised as its Taurida Oblast in 1783. In 1954, the Soviet Crimean Oblast was transferred from Russia to Ukraine; it eventually became the Autonomous Republic of Crimea within newly independent Ukraine in 1991. The status of Sevastopol, a strategically important port and the peninsula’s largest city, was disputed by the Russian Federation, and only after a lengthy process was it declared a “city with special status” within Ukraine in 1997… Ethnic composition of Crimea’s population has changed dramatically since the early 20th century. The 1879 Russian Empire Census for the Taurida Governorate reported: 194,294 (35.55%) Crimean Tatars, 180,963 (33.11%) Russians and 64,703 (11.84%) Ukrainians…. Crimean Tatars, a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority who in 2001 made up 12.1% of the population,[31] formed in Crimea in the late Middle Ages, after the Crimean Khanate had come into existence. The Crimean Tatars were forcibly expelled to Central Asia by Joseph Stalin’s government. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Crimean Tatars began to return to the region.[32] According to the 2001 Ukrainian population census 58% of the population of Crimea are ethnic Russians and 24% are ethnic Ukrainians.[31].http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimea (Emphasis Added) Putin’s taking of Crimea is strictly illegitimate geo-strategy.
EU-Finland
Map of Finland by Nuclear Vacuum via Wikimedia (The name is not a joke!)

What claim could Russia have to Finland? Much less! In Finland the official languages are Finnish (90.0%),Swedish (5.4%), and the Sami language. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland
As speakers of Finno-Uralic languages, Finland may have rights to parts of Russia, but Russia has no legitimate rights to Finland! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uralic_languages
From the 12th until the early 19th century, Finland was part of Sweden, a legacy reflected in the prevalence of the Swedish language and its official status. It then became an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire until the Russian Revolution, which prompted the Finnish Declaration of Independence.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland Finland was autonomous within the Russian Empire, but for only a little over 100 years, which is historically nothing in the vast expanse of historyAutonomy within Russia, 29 March 1809 -Independence from Soviet Russia, 6 December 1917http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland (Emphasis added)

Most worrisome, however, is this Russian controlled enclave within the EU. Historically, there is no justification in Russia controlling it as a Russia exclave, and yet Russia does.
Kaliningrad in Russia
Map of Kaliningrad via Wikimedia Commons

Kaliningrad Oblast, now Russia:
The oblast’s largest city and administrative center is Kaliningrad (formerly Königsberg), which has historical significance as both a major city of the historical state of Prussia and the capital of the former German province of East Prussia. After World War II, East Prussia was divided between the USSR and Poland, and Königsberg was renamed after the Soviet head of state Mikhail Kalinin… Kaliningrad is the only Russian Baltic Sea port that is ice-free all year round and hence plays an important role in maintenance of the Baltic Fleet. In July 2007, Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov declared that if US-controlled missile defense systems were deployed in Poland, then nuclear weapons might be deployed in Kaliningrad
The Kaliningrad Oblast is an exclave, geographically separated from the rest of Russia. This isolation was enhanced by the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 when Lithuania became an independent country and even more when both Poland and Lithuania became members of NATO and subsequently the European Union in 2004. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the independence of the Baltic states, Kaliningrad Oblast has been separated from the rest of Russia by other countries instead of by other Soviet republics. Neighboring nations imposed strict border controls when they joined the European Union. All military and civilian land links between the region and the rest of Russia have to pass through members of NATO and the EU. Russian proposals for visa-free travel between the EU and Kaliningrad have so far been rejected by the EU. Travel arrangements, based on the Facilitated Transit Document (FTD) and Facilitated Rail Transit Document (FRTD).[17][18] have been made

Another news item which appears an April Fools joke, but is not, is Japan sending residents back to the radiation zone. Shocking that Reuters buys into the malarkey comparing the radiation to natural background. As the radionuclides may be inhaled or ingested, it is not strictly an issue of external doses. And, there is nothing natural about it! Also is “Japan allows people…” the right title? Probably not. All of these items are dated 31 March 2014 and, as such, should be no joke. Certainly they are no joking matters.

Conspiracy of Stupidity, Arrogance and Meanness

As we look around the world we lean toward this or that conspiracy theory, but in the end we tend to return to the same conclusion. There is no real conspiracy per se. Rather the world is being run by too many people who are some combination of mean, arrogant, out of touch, and often stupid, and often corrupt. There is really no other way to explain why the world is still saddled with the nuclear industry nor why the nuclear waste is being handled in such a half-ass way or maybe we should say a full-ass way.

A general example of sheer stupidity is the UK government’s handling of the Scottish quest for independence. An intelligent UK government would be promising Scotland wonderful things if they stay. But, no, the UK government is full of nothing but threats toward Scotland, punctuated by the occasional worry, as on Sunday: Scotland could win. If this is the way they treat Scotland when Scotland is thinking of leaving do you even want to know how badly Scotland will be treated if it stays in the UK? Wait until the 19th of September! Lord help you if you are in Scotland! Aren’t you glad that you aren’t married to these people? Geez. Imagine how they treat their spouses!

One thing for certain is that Putin is not generally stupid, though he too is stupid about nuclear. But, so many of the other leaders and administrators are: Stupid, mean, arrogant, out of touch and often corrupt. These are the people bringing us nuclear and all other bad things. How ever did they get into power? How will we get them out of power? Lord help us all! We are in trouble.

Yesterday was the 35th Anniversary of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Disaster. We appear to have learned nothing. Interesting that despite the Cold War, 1979 appeared the death-knell of nuclear. But, nuclear power plants produce plutonium needed to keep nuclear warhead-arsenals functional or make new ones. So, Nuclear Empires seem to require nuclear power. Why nuclear weapons? Intimidation, it seems. Whatcha gonna do? They got the A-bomb (too)!

TMI cleanup-2
Cleaning up at Three Mile Island

Three Myths of the Three Mile Island Accident Presented by Arnie Gundersen” His “Conclusion: A thorough analysis of the TMI accident indicates that releases were 100 to 1000 times higher than the NRC estimated and that the containment failed after the hydrogen detonation.” Read the entire presentation here: http://www.nirs.org/reactorwatch/accidents/tmipowerpoint.pdf Arnie Gundersen presents a convincing argument that the containment was breached. He points to there being higher pressure within the containment prior to a pressure spike, followed by equal or near equal pressure inside and out, which clearly suggests a breach in containment. Anyone who has dealt with balloons or tires can understand this.

Similarly to several nuclear power plants currently under construction, Three Mile Island’s construction was characterized by “faulty concrete pours, delays and cost overruns“. It only ran for one year before the accident: “Finally on March 28, 1978, TMI Unit II went critical for the first time. Ten months later, on December 30, 1978, just in time for millions of dollars in tax breaks, and in spite of continuing serious problems, Unit II went into commercial operation“. The accident occurred on March 28, 1979. Information from: “Three Mile Island: Then, Now and Next Time by Mary Stamos Osborn, Concerned Mothers and Women of Middletown” (1996) http://www.greens.org/s-r/10/10-05.html This article has a lot of important information about health impacts, government policies (e.g. buying up cows), coverups, insurance settlements etc.

Several New Nuclear Builds, despite being in three different countries and being constructed under the supervision of two different companies, have had similar problems with concrete. They have also had issues of rebar and containment welding. Here is info about the French Flamanville reactor by French gov owned EDF-AREVA:
Examples of technical problems highlighted during inspections:
Water excess in structural concrete;
Lack of reinforcement in the nuclear island basemat;
Cracks in the concrete of the reactor basemat;
Welding process of the containment steel liner;
Unsatisfactory treatment of concreting joints.

Part of the US Nuclear Regulatory description of the Three Mile Island Accident:
A combination of equipment malfunctions, design-related problems and worker errors led to TMI-2’s partial meltdown
The accident began about 4 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 1979, when the plant experienced a failure in the secondary, non-nuclear section of the plant (one of two reactors on the site). Either a mechanical or electrical failure prevented the main feedwater pumps from sending water to the steam generators that remove heat from the reactor core. This caused the plant’s turbine-generator and then the reactor itself to automatically shut down. Immediately, the pressure in the primary system (the nuclear portion of the plant) began to increase. In order to control that pressure, the pilot-operated relief valve (a valve located at the top of the pressurizer) opened. The valve should have closed when the pressure fell to proper levels, but it became stuck open. Instruments in the control room, however, indicated to the plant staff that the valve was closed. As a result, the plant staff was unaware that cooling water was pouring out of the stuck-open valve. As coolant flowed from the primary system through the valve, other instruments available to reactor operators provided inadequate information. There was no instrument that showed how much water covered the core. As a result, plant staff assumed that as long as the pressurizer water level was high, the core was properly covered with water. As alarms rang and warning lights flashed, the operators did not realize that the plant was experiencing a loss-of-coolant accident. They took a series of actions that made conditions worse. The water escaping through the stuck valve reduced primary system pressure so much that the reactor coolant pumps had to be turned off to prevent dangerous vibrations. To prevent the pressurizer from filling up completely, the staff reduced how much emergency cooling water was being pumped in to the primary system. These actions starved the reactor core of coolant, causing it to overheat. Without the proper water flow, the nuclear fuel overheated to the point at which the zirconium cladding (the long metal tubes that hold the nuclear fuel pellets) ruptured and the fuel pellets began to melt. It was later found that about half of the core melted during the early stages of the accident… TMI-2 suffered a severe core meltdown, the most dangerous kind of nuclear power accident…
http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/fact-sheets/3mile-isle.html (emphasis added).

Excerpts from wikipedia regarding the Three Mile Island accident:
The design of the PORV indicator light was fundamentally flawed…Anti-nuclear political groups disputed the Kemeny Commission’s findings, claiming that independent measurements provided evidence of radiation levels up to five times higher than normal in locations hundreds of miles downwind from TMI.[48] Randall Thompson, a health physics technician employed to monitor radioactive emissions at TMI after the accident, said ‘I think the numbers on the NRC’s website are off by a factor of 100 to 1,000’.[44][49] Some other insiders, including Arnie Gundersen, a former nuclear industry executive who is now an expert witness in nuclear safety issues,[50][51] make the same claim; Gundersen offers evidence, based on pressure monitoring data, for a hydrogen explosion shortly before 2:00 p.m. on March 28, 1979, which would have provided the means for a high dose of radiation to occur.[44] Gundersen cites affidavits from four reactor operators according to which the plant manager was aware of a dramatic pressure spike, after which the internal pressure dropped to outside pressure. Gundersen also notes that the control room shook and doors were blown off hinges. However official NRC reports refer merely to a ‘hydrogen burn.'[44] The Kemeny Commission referred to ‘a burn or an explosion that caused pressure to increase by 28 pounds per square inch in the containment building’.[52] The Washington Post reported that ‘At about 2:00 p.m., with pressure almost down to the point where the huge cooling pumps could be brought into play, a small hydrogen explosion jolted the reactor.'[53]….
A peer-reviewed research article by Dr. Steven Wing found a significant increase in cancers from 1979-1985 among people who lived within ten miles of TMI…; in 2009 Dr. Wing stated that radiation releases during the accident were probably ‘thousands of times greater’ than the NRC’s estimates. A retrospective study of Pennsylvania Cancer Registry found an increased incidence of thyroid cancer in counties south of TMI and in high-risk age groups but did not draw a causal link with these incidences and to the accident

Logging one of the causes of giant Oso, WA mudslide
by Ralph Maughan on March 27, 2014 http://www.thewildlifenews.com/2014/03/27/logging-one-of-the-causes-of-giant-oso-wa-mudslide/

Ah, what democracy in the American Empire: an opponent to fracking has not been allowed to go to the grocery or hospital in her home, due to a Texas gas company!  The Nuclear and Petroleum Industries Rule the USA.
German industrials continues to kiss up to Russia, while the German government is supposed to be doing sanctions. The homeless continue to die at Fukushima. The media seems to only mention TEPCO and not contractors on the ground such as Toshiba and its Utah based partner Energy Solutions who have been unable to get the water filtration going, all while serious water filtration companies wait in line for a chance to try. It is past time for Energy Solutions and its “ALPS” to get out of the way of water purification and give serious companies a chance. It is a serious challenge to get workers to go in on the ground, but it is NOT a challenge to find water experts and other technical advice. The ALPS has repeatedly proven defective since at least last September and doesn’t even try to filter Tritium. If US Sen. Harry Reid’s Energy Solutions Fundraiser event has to do with why TEPCO is stuck with ALPS, then Reid needs to get out of the way. And, if it is Shinzo Abe, in the way, he REALLY needs to wake up and move out of the way! He practices ancestor worship and who pray tell will honour and worship him when he dies if he kills off humanity? Think about that Shinzo! Who will honour you? A radiation resistant microbe? Nobody.

Amoral Siemens, Putin, and the Writing on the Wall

The CEO of German Siemens just went to visit Russia’s President Putin. While Siemens has the good sense to have seen the writing on the wall for the nuclear power industry and exited the industry, they appear to fail to see the writing on the wall for totalitarianism, empires and imperialism. And, let’s tell it like it is – since World War II, Empire building has been lock-step (or is it goose-step?) with the nuclear power industry, whose byproducts are used both to make and to upkeep nuclear bombs. This explains, for instance, Russian government owned Rosatom and almost totally French government owned Areva.

Siemens has, in the past, like most corporations, shown an amoral attitude or ethical relativism. What counts for a corporation is its financial bottom line. And so, Siemens, like many other firms, used slave labour under the Nazi Regime. It also “supplied electrical parts to concentration camps and death camps“. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siemens

Their attitude should not surprise us at all. If some people, like ourselves, saw the end of the Cold War as the end of fears of nuclear annihilation and some thought it was about free speech and freedom, for corporations it was just an opportunity to expand their business interests. (They missed the part that Russians would naturally want to expand Russian interests too!).

So, we should not be surprised that the CEO of Siemens cuddles up to Putin. If Russia ever changed since Czarist times, we were looking down for that historical second and didn’t notice. Putin as Stalinist KGB officer or dressed in Czarist robes, is still the same totalitarian individual- all the more dangerous because of his apparent inferiority complex. Any new Putin or new Russia was just people seeing what they wanted to see, so-as to carry on business as usual. There are none so blind as those who will not see. “Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not” (Jeremiah 5:21) Now those “foolish people” are called world leaders!

Putin’s behavior and attitude sniff not only of Czarist Russia but also of Hitler’s Lebensraum:
Hitler’s policy of Lebensraum strongly emphasized the conquest of new lands in the East, known as Generalplan Ost, and the exploitation of these lands to provide cheap goods and labour to Germany.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forced_labour_under_German_rule_during_World_War_II

We should also not be surprised at Switzerland’s attitude either, considering that according to the Bergier Report, written by Swiss historians, Hitler’s Third Reich could not have lasted for very long at all without Swiss assistance. It is believed that Nazi Germany could only have lasted months without Swiss assistance and that the Swiss could have held out for a couple of years. Even as it became clear that Germany was losing the war, Swiss companies continued to work with Germany.

Much ado has been made of the “risks” of “Balkanization.” And, what’s wrong with the Balkans or Balkanization? The real danger is and always has been that of Empire, and those who aide and abet it.

Decentralization of energy and End of anti-democratic, militaristic Empires, is the only hope for the survival of the earth and its inhabitants. The yoke and chains of serfdom must be thrown off.

Amnesty International’s Timeline of Putin’s Russia:
Since Vladimir Putin came to power in 1999 there has been an increased crackdown on freedoms of expression, assembly and association in Russia. Putin’s 2012 landslide victory sparked even an even greater repression of rights following the large protests after his re-election. Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery was found guilty of ‘organizational offenses,’ using Swiss bank accounts to bribe executives of a ‘Russian state-owned’ gas production company…Swiss prosecutors say that Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery paid the bribes between 2004 and 2006 to land the contract to supply gas turbines for the Yamal gas pipeline,…According to Swissinfo, Siemens paid over US $2 billion in bribes in the 1990s and 2000s“. A laundry list of allegations against Siemens: “SIEMENS (FOREIGN BRIBERY ACTIONS” https://www.traceinternational2.org/compendium/view.asp?id=124

Siemens “supplied electrical parts to concentration camps and death camps. The factories had poor working conditions, where malnutrition and death were common. Also, the scholarship has shown that the camp factories were created, run, and supplied by the SS, in conjunction with company officials, sometimes high-level officials. Siemens businessman and Nazi Party member John Rabe is, however, credited with saving many Chinese lives during the Nanking Massacre“. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siemens (References at link) “The Nanking Massacre, also known as the Rape of Nanking, was an episode of mass murder and mass rape committed by Japanese troops against Nanking (current official spelling: Nanjing) during the Second Sino-Japanese War“. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre

Hitler’s policy of Lebensraum strongly emphasized the conquest of new lands in the East, known as Generalplan Ost, and the exploitation of these lands to provide cheap goods and labour to Germany. Even before the war, Nazi Germany maintained a supply of slave labour. This practice started from the early days of labour camps of ‘undesirables’…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forced_labour_under_German_rule_during_World_War_II
The use of forced labour in Nazi Germany and throughout German-occupied Europe during World War II took place on an unprecedented scale.[1] It was a vital part of the German economic exploitation of conquered territories. It also contributed to the mass extermination of populations in German-occupied Europe. The Nazi Germans abducted approximately 12 million people from almost twenty European countries; about two thirds of whom came from Eastern Europe.[2] Many workers died as a result of their living conditions, mistreatment, malnutrition, or became civilian casualties of war. At its peak the forced labourers comprised 20% of the German work force. Counting deaths and turnover, about 15 million men and women were forced labourers at one point or another during the war.[3]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forced_labour_under_German_rule_during_World_War_II

Obviously there is good money to be made in renewable energy or Siemens wouldn’t be there! Siemens ethics is its bottom line and they have said, no to nuclear, and yes to wind:
